The Official 2019 Topps Heritage Discussion and Trade Thread

jmmiller777jmmiller777 Posts: 1,324 ✭✭✭

Any thoughts on the 2019 (1970) Topps Heritage Issue? While I really like the look of the 1 of 1's and he 5 of 5's and whatever, I have never been fortunate to open one. Are case prices going to rise again this year? The big stars signing? I would expect a subset, maybe a 10 card set of Munson to be issued. Perhaps a focus on some all-stars since there is a lack of great rookies. Vida Blue, Darrell Evans, and Bill Buckner are about as good as it gets. I have sets from every Heritage year and unopened boxes/cases for each year since I am a fan of the 60's, but now that we are moving into the 70's, I don't know how far out I will go. What about the rest of you?

So, Cardboard Connection just gave us the first look at the set. It looks nice, but I agree with a comment that a member makes; it looks like the borders are to wide and the picture to small. If these cards come off the press miscut, then they are going to look really bad with so much border on each side to begin with. Hope Topps puts some quality assurance into this. I guess we wish this every year. The Brewers will be a special feature of this set, marking their entrance into the league. Feb 27th is the release date, earlier than the usual March time frame.

Is the 2019 set still going to have so many SP's in it?? I quit making the sets several years ago because the SP's were getting so pricey to find.

However I do like the 60's format that were used, so I'm always sitting on the fence about it.

I’ve expected all along that I’d surely be dragged to 77 at least. But pretty sure once there I’ll roll through the 80 version. I can’t see going beyond that...but who knows?

If those are really how they look (Cardboard Connection article) the borders are way too wide. They look like a bad mock-up of a 1970 fantasy card. Hopefully they fix this before they issue. I didn’t like the ‘52-‘56 Heritage because they were too small and should have been larger sized. Have liked them since but they really missed the mark on this set.

Think Heritage will go all the way to the ‘89 design at least but who knows.

If they do them right really think ‘71,’72, ‘75, ‘81 and ‘83 will be cool sets.

I agree that the Mookie Betts shown in the Cardboard Connection article is not the most attractive card. I also looked at the Beckett news release, and they show a Francisco Lindor example that has much thinner borders and looks nice. Hopefully, the Lindor is more in line with what the actual product will look like.

Racing guy here, but I use to collect the older Topps baseball sets. Will 2019 Heritage card number 1 be the World Champions team photo card? Does Heritage have team photo's in them?

  • 53BKid53BKid Posts: 2,164 ✭✭✭

I began collecting in earnest in 1970 and had looked forward to seeing this heritage issue. Actually, I find the wide boarders very disappointing. I wonder why Topps felt compelled to go with that kind of a format. They're different enough that I probably hold off on collecting the set.

The Box Toppers like the 1970 Supers and posters should be fun to collect. Scratch-offs would have been cool, but even back then weren't too popular.

    HAPPY COLLECTING!!!

This year I'm thinking of capping how much I spend.

It's just too easy to drop some blasters into the basket every time I go to Target with the wife.

I will think about 1 hobby case and that's it.

Now, I remember back around 2003 or 4 paying more like $60 per box for a case.

If I don't like the price? I'm out. Or I'll buy a blaster case - where the retail is way less - since I don't really care for all the extra SPs.

From where I started in 2001, Heritage has gotten very complicated.

Mike, I collected Heritage HEAVY in 2004 and 2005. Master sets with all SP's and variations. Still have them. Now that Heritage is entering "my decade" of youth I'm interested again. But yeah, looks pretty wild. A hobby case is a GRAND. Jesus. ....

Cannot wait for Heritage to get into the 70's. Personally I think that the next 3 years will be tough for simply ripping packs and expecting most cards to be in "10" condition. I for one think it will add a bit to the thrill of the hunt and that's where the fun is for me.

    Can't wait!

Always looking for tougher PSA 10's of Nolan Arenado, Alex Bregman, Mookie Betts, Francisco Lindor, and Mike Trout.

I'm looking forward to this release because of the 1970 Mint Relics. These cards come with coins from 1970 embedded in them. For those who don't know, the half dollar in 1970 contained 40% silver and was never issued for circulation. It had a low mintage and is somewhat scarce. There will be a 1/1 card with a Half Dollar in it.

As some have already stated, I really hope the design is more in line with the Beckett article cards showing Lindor and not the Cardboard Connection Betts. If the Betts reflects the real design, then someone at Topps needs to be fired. That is awful.

It may not be a big deal these days, but the 1971 Topps set was the first to include action shots. Paired with the horizontal format on just some of the cards, and depicting game situations with multiple players, made that an awesome set for kids to collect. I still remember being mesmerized sorting them out.

My older cousin introduced me to cards at a local candy store in '69 and had a few packs. '70 was the first set I collected full bore as a kid. By '71 it was a full blown obsession.

I've cooled on Heritage for the reasons expressed above, as it's gotten too complicated with all the chase cards and different formats. I'll wait to see what the '70s look like in hand before making judgement, but either way, I'm not going to pour in anywhere near as much as I did previously. I have to believe that based on availability in stores, the print runs of the more recent Heritage since 2010 have skyrocketed.

    HAPPY COLLECTING!!!

I bet the older vintage guys who may drop out get replaced by younger nostalgic guys from the late 70’s and 80’s. Don’t forget that’s a near decade from now. The collectors from that time period are certainly there. There is much love for the late 70’s through mid 80’s regardless of over printing. Many gorgeous sets in there.

Looks like the ad panels are gone after a 10 year run. I can't imagine anyone getting excited over the scratch offs this year, but hopefully the Greatest Moments will be the boxtopper in '20.

It would be coins and Greatest Moments. But they didn't do coins when they did '64 Heritage, and they did do test sets in previous years (punchouts and disks) and cards are easier to produce than coins, so I'm hoping for the GM's.

Just not sure about the value, dropping a grand, hoping you get a "master set" (although I'm not even sure what that is anymore). I know getting a complete set out of a case was getting harder. And then having a bunch of random "chase" cards and really one maybe two "big"-ger hits. Wished the set was cleaner and more focused like the earlier days but that was a decade ago... haha.

Rookie crop other than Vlad Jr is going to be tumbleweeds. I think that's gonna hurt Heritage and Series 1. Good news for the longtime Heritage set collectors that don't care about that though. I definitely wouldn't preorder though. I'd wait and watch the prices drop.

I haven't seen the prices drop much over the past few years. I'm not sure but the price increase may also have to do with a cut in production. I think I've seen last year hobby boxes (on sale) for $106. 2016 boxes for $124.

Just a guess, I've been watching from a distance since 2014 (the 1965 set, haha- edited), buying a random box here and there. High Numbers appear available.

I just saw a 2018 Hobby box marked down from $180 to $110. How could anyone justify to themselves spending $180 for a box last year's Heritage?

Has to be priced on supply, right?

Opening that up with a 99.99% chance of being disappointed when the "hit" is a Kyle Seager relic card.... haha.

Shohei Ohtani, perhaps, was the reason?

    Hmmm... probably. Chasing Ohtani.

But if you figure there is one per case, chasing it a the box level might be along shot.
