Rare $10 Liberty recently graded

This coin, an 1860-O $10 recently graded, the dealer thought it could go Unc. because friction was minimal, and he was thinking of a resubmission. Accurately graded, or just high end for grade? https://www.pcgs.com/cert/34868362

Pretty coin. 55 seems pretty conservative (but I don't know the series.)
I like it as a 55.
Definitely not unc, never gonna unc, but nice as a 55.
If here is no old cleaning hairlines, send it in a few more times and you may get a 58 one day.
That's what AU is.
Nice coin, wish I had one.

There should be NO wear on a Mint State coin.
A very attractive coin, and I would not object to an AU-58, but not a Mint State coin IMHO.
The dealer should stop grading coins at once!
That is the perfect au55, a great au58 too

I grade it WOW. Clearly a coin that speaks volumes across the board for all the attributes that make a coin special. Enjoy this coin for what it is instead of what a label says it is. No plastic or sticker or anything else is a substitute for what this coin is... A masterpiece even though it may not be MS.

A very nice coin that I would love to own but it doesn't look uncirculated to me. On a good day it might grade 58 but I think 55 is more than fair from the picture.
it's crackers to slip a rozzer the dropsy in snide
The grade of AU55 is correct. Nice coin.
Grading aside, I cannot recall ever handling an 1860-O $10 in my life.
Great looking coin. 55 seems right to me too, but 58 not out of the question either.
Are there dates that are heavily sought in the $10 Liberty series, beyond just collecting based on rarity, registry, etc.?
I had an 1861-O $20 once in XF that seemed to be popular based on civil war date connections.
The short answer is there are dates that have a following and rightly so... Especially when they look like this one. However, the degree of how heavily sought they are depends on who you ask.

I like the look at that coin and AU55 seems about right.
Many members on this forum that now it cannot fit in my signature. Please ask for entire list.
I couldn't say. Been retired too long. You might want to check the many publications of Doug Winter.
By the picture I grade it AU55++ or au58 -
Great looking coin for an AU55. I really like that NO date in the $10 No Motto series.

Fantastic color.

AU-55 looks like the right grade to me.
Nice coin!!
For those who are link challenged:

Love the awesome toning! It does, however, look slightly circulated. 55 seems fair... a little too much chatter, esp. on the neck, to warrant a 58 IMO.
Looking at area around the stars, are those remnant of an old cleaning job?
If so, you think PCGS blinked an eye because its a rare coin?
Gold coins are my favorite, and looking at the picture - and magnified - I thought AU55... and that is not bad, I like the coin very much.... Cheers, RickO
resubmitt under the power plus program. Needs a better grade (ie: higher).
Excellent coin, fantastic color. Accurately graded.

i think 55 is a good grade for that one. very nice coin...nice strike and color. too much wear for unc...hard to say if it's a good 58 without seeing the luster in hand.
That's exactly what original toned gold should look like. The copper in the 90% gold alloy does tone, although the gold does not. This leads to pretty multi-hued/layered "halo" toning, lighter around rims and devices (such as the stars). You can see many examples of this in various gold/toning threads here, such as this one: old original toning thread and on Doug Winter's Coinapedia. If the toning is more flat/uniform in color, without the halo effect, that's often indicative of non-original toning.
55 seems good. The reverse is probably a 58.
I agree with the 55 assessment. Any higher is really pushing it.
I like that coin a lot!

i like the coin as well. maybe a bean would go with it as well.
Maybe logger would RENT it to you?

???
Agree 100% but with the originality and total coin, no one would bat an eye at 58 either.

I agree with your agreement

Looks about 50 to me, maybe 53 after a few drinks. At 55 it is my opinion is the grader was being generous that day, seems to be the common theme these days. Still very nice, I'd love to own it, just not for AU money.

Wooooha! Did someone just say it's officially "TACO™" Tuesday????
I've found NGC is more likely to assign the AU58 grade on AUs with minimal rub, full luster and marks count for less against 58 with NGC than PCGS. BTW the dealer ran it as a bin on ebay at $5900 and it sold right away. I told him he would have done better on the bst section on this site.
Really?? Do you own any rare gold?

I'd pay PCGS/CAC AU55 money for it...
Wow. What a beautiful example....

I own some slabbed and raw pre 33 gold if that's what your asking. I wouldn't call any of it "rare", mostly common date and nothing above a 63/64, purchased more for bullion value and not collection.
I understand the TPG services are VERY liberal on the grades they give out for US pre-33 gold and PCGS seems to give out higher grades than the others, which is strange because that's certainly not the case for other coins they grade. I'm not questioning rarity of the coin, it's a 50 in my opinion. If I've been drinking I might slide it to a 53. My opinion and I stand by it.

Do you own any pre-civil war gold? If not, this is what PQ examples without destructive human cleaning efforts should look like, around the stars, those are areas that are protected from bag marks and scuffing, so relative to the scuffed up fields, that is a different textured surface with original luster and perhaps toning - (need to see in hand to be sure if toned).
Best, SH
The rub on the high points of the Portrait is pretty apparent. Lovely coin! Keep sending it in, and it'll be 58 one day.
Here's a warning parable for coin collectors...
Chill out, everybody. This is n't a matter of life or death. It's just a coin. If it were mine I would be happy to own it and not care what anybody else thought of it.
sorry but 55 looks right

A very nice 55 coin.
