Part of me wonders whether the OP would have been the star of his own thread, with 14 pages of comments. :D:'( The OP may have dodged a bullet.

Love everyone bashing Instagram. Often times at least 1 or 2 threads on the front page are eBay related - where's the demand for an eBay thread?

The internet, and social media platforms have become a part of coin collecting & dealing whether you like it or not. If you don't like reading about instagram my advice is brilliantly simple.......... don't read about it.

Demand for Ebay thread is over at the BST or "alternative Ebay site." Members have commented on that often. A separate Ebay BST Forum might not be a bad idea.

I don't have an Instagram account so I don't read about coin deals going on over there. But, when they get dragged over here there's typically no "sign" posted on the thread to warn us that it's an Instagram Fight Club card carried over to here. Kudo's to the OP for identifying this thread as "Another Instagram Thread." No doubt that will keep many people clear of it.

To cut to the chase, it sounds like another case of "to je govno," to me.

If I recall correctly (which I do), you were the one to back out of our transaction. I had committed to purchse a 1925 toned peace dollar for $225 and a 1861 $2.50 quarter eagle for $230. Then you had asked me if I am the guy who posted on the boards about being scammed about the dimes.
Immediately after I said yes, you raised the prices to $250 & $240 totaling $490. I told you I needed to raise $60 more in order to send you the funds.
I, then, logged out of instagram and only logged on around 1PM after a friend texted me and asks do me if I backed out of this deal.

To my surprise, I found that the OP/seller had sold the coins which I committed to, without notifying me, and also claimed that I backed out of a deal.

I told the OP I needed to raise $60, so he decided to "save the headache" and sell them to somebody else. I suppose the OP/seller does not have any patience.

I have no dog in the fight, but it was $250 and $240. I remember offering $230 for the gold at almost the same time you said $240, so it went to you.

Is this fun? This feels like a post that may be in collusion with this Elliott guy... in order to cast dispersion upon Gary.
The OP knows Gary is unique, demanding, and a minor...

I, in my own experience, have found that the "art of the deal" can have its own cultural perspective. We once had a group of 10 guests come into the restaurant and they were all from a specific geographic area... they dined, they drank, and once dinner was over they felt it was time to negotiate the check. Things got real heated as there was no way they were going to pay full price... Once we called security EVERYTHING was paid and all ended well...
My point sometimes the deal making process has many nuances to it and for some the negotiations never stop...

    Just a thought

Gary, I think I would get a kick out of you. You, obviously, have above average intelligence, a good numismatic eye, and a willingness to get involved. I love it.

Yeah can't deny that unfortunately there is a larger portion of immature people on Instagram than there is other platforms such as eBay and of course shows. But I promise there is a lot of awesome people who are active on social media!

Imo, this guy Gary is building a bad reputation to younger people, esp YN. Another one wants to answer any and all questions... in public! lol!

Already the world calls millenials as "entitled"...

From the way he responds, posts and replies, it seems like he has a chip on his shoulder.

    Empty vessel make more noise!

    Sorry to sound harsh...

No. There are quite enough 'younger people', that are posting in that thread and perhaps this one, that give the bad rep to dealing with younger (YNs) people, imho.

As I mentioned in the other thread, he had pinged me last year wanting to sell me unsolicited coins. I wasn't interested then, for various reasons, and he dropped it.

Also, as Roadrunner mentioned, some of us weren't defending him in the other thread, as a YN or otherwise, aside from when self-righteous board members kept harping at certain things (whether he was really 16 or not....not that it mattered) and were more focused on the dealer's side of things and how the dealer appeared to have conducted the business deal. From the dealer's "friend", and his comments, and from the posted screen shots in the dealer's own words, that is a dealer I will NEVER do business with and will NEVER recommend to anyone else. Seriously.

So, don't get your underroos in a bunch and blame Gary for how younger people are looking....that dealer (at 29 years old) counts as younger...as do a fair number of other posters here....that are doing a bang up job making some of us very unlikely to want to deal with younger people like that.

Instagram may save some $$$ for some folks using it to sell, but it wasn't created as a selling platform and there are too many potential issues with it. Play with fire enough and you may avoid getting burned a few times but, at some time, you are very likely to get burned....maybe when you feel most complacent.

I've been told I tolerate fools poorly...that may explain things if I have a problem with you. Current ebay items - Nothing at the moment

There's a saying you should probably learn, no offense intended. I'll use the version with minor-friendly language.

If you run into one butthole, you ran into a butthole. If you run into buttholes all day, you're the butthole.

I mean, I can either choose to believe that everybody is screwing you, or that you're screwing yourself. Guess which one I'm going to be predisposed to believe? If you made an honest mistake, own up to it. Don't spin this stuff.

You do realize that he has had successful transactions with forum members? Some spoke up in the other thread. So, are you calling them "@$$holes", in your scenario? Or, are you just generalizing a few instances and saying it is rampant, so it seems cool in a thread where some are ganging up on the kid? Curious

No offense Relaxn, but if Gary had "a
Good Numismatic eye" we would have about 700 less thread responses, and we would be probably be talking about coins, and not waisting so much time and energy on one transaction. But thats just my take in all this bologna.

Lets not lose the perspective that he is 16 yeara old? How was your numismatic eye at 16? If you project to where his eye will be in 10,20,30+ years... lets not forget he plucked multiple high dollar rosies out of the wild and put them in some big rosie collections...
Not sure it was his numismatic eye that caused the bs but rather the 16 yo mentality mixes with dealings with a dealer that did not allow returns...

But not looking to rehash it. I would rather see him mentored opposed to ostracized

I prefer to buy my coins the old fashioned way...via internet dealer websites sent on approval and via online auctions. This Instagram thing seems dodgy.

Many years ago, I was sixteen years old. I also collected coins. .
My two most expensive purchases were a 31 D Dime that I thought was Gem BU, and a 1936 S Walker which I also thought was likewise. Paid $75 for the former, $35 for the latter.
Due to a combination of my not rotating the dime properly and bad lighting, I missed a contact mark that went along the jaw line. Years later, I got $50 for it. The Walker is now in a PC 6 holder with a CAC sticker. I still have it.
Yes, I have gotten much better with age, but at 16, my eye wasn't too bad. I also turned a $22 purchase of an Unc. set of Silver Roosevelt Dimes into $250. And more importantly, the only person who I blamed about the purchase of the dime was me, and vowed to pay more attention to this sort of thing in the future, which I did. I took responsibility for my mistake at age 16. This kid seems to want to blame everyone but himself.

Are you serious? He took no ownership for his part in the fiasco, instead he stood back and let you and a select few others blindly defend him without ever hearing the dealers side of the story. IMHO you and a few others missed an opportunity to help and mentor him.

Serious as a heart attack. If he were in my area, I'd mentor him at local shows/shops.

Though doesn't seem like he wants that type of help. Obviously, we both have different interpretations of that thread. The kid responded to all requests thrown at him....and handled the discussions "in that thread" just fine. What went on outside that thread, who knows? We never did get the seller's full "side" of the deal....or any side of the deal.

I missed an opportunity to "mentor" him? I think yourself and others did just a fine job of "mentoring"....lol. He got plenty of inputs from both sides. He accepted 100% full ownership of the situation by sending off the raw coins to NGC. It will be interesting to find out what those Roosies end up grading....someone will "leak" the news around here.

BNB (I'm naming him, everyone let me know if he's unchanged and unrepentant) would require a long, long mentoring. He'd probably listen to the right person saying the right things at the right time.

This one. perhaps less mentoring, but still lengthy. a few talks, even from the same person, would not be enough.
