Just put this 1875-s quarter on hold with Brian Greer. It's Briggs 1-A, which has a small, squat "s" mint mark, the least common mint mark style for the date. 1875-s quarters are much scarcer than 1875-s Twenty Cent pieces, and I think they are somewhat overlooked.

Ron - Good looking find.

New purchase from Brian Greer. Look closely... it's an "O" mint.
5 -
That 'Ghost' 1A die state is cool Ron! You always have neat coins.
It is not that life is short, but that you are dead for so very long.1 -

An 1865-P half is a real pain in the "reverse" to locate in anything approaching nice condition. I have a VF20 in slightly less nice condition than the coin pictured above, and it was also obtained from Brian Greer. This date is very scarce overall, and most of them have been cleaned.

Not in hand yet but on it's way to be added to my 1868 Proof Set!8 -
Please feel free to venture a guess on the grade of this one:
My current coin collecting interests are: (1) British coins 1838-1970 in XF-AU-UNC, (2) silver type coins in XF-AU with that classic medium gray coloration and exceptional eye appeal.3 -

AU-50? or possibly 53? Nice rim toning!
I never thought that growing old would happen so fast.

Wow! Some beauties posted here the past couple of days.
Cary - Regardless of what our hosts would say (50?), that's some wonderful album toning.

Worn slick, but I find it attractive!

New purchase- PCGS XF45. 1873-s is a little bit under-appreciated tough date in a series that doesn't have all that many common dates.
2 -
New pics of a crusty 1857-P that I bought last year. PCGS AU58.
4 -
New XF40 1855-P for my collection. While this date can be found in XF-AU, most have been cleaned or dipped. It is scarcer than 1854-P and 1856-P, and much scarcer than the ubiquitous 1853 Arr. This coin is a "horizontal upgrade" for my other XF 1855-P, which isn't nearly as original.

When they have minimal "shipwreck effect" NGC then assigns them a details grade, usually AU or UNC. Then they also rate them as A, B or C coins as a measure of how much shipwreck effect the coins show. If you can find the UNC (A) coins like this one, they can look amazing, but of course they also usually go for a premium too.

I have to admit, I haven't seen many shipwreck effect coins but the few A's that I saw did not look anything like this.

That's a good point... not all of the Shipwreck Effect (A) coins are equal. They are just the best out there that show the least saltwater damage. But certainly some are better than others and that one I posted earlier is probably the best I've ever had. For comparison, here are a couple other (A) coins I've had:

A couple of 1856-O quarters to add to the above....
Both of these are now in PCGS holders. The crusty, original one graded XF45 and the one with (attractive) secondary toning graded AU50. I think they have similar amounts of wear, and the XF45 is actually the better coin! It's amazing how a good dip can remove those flat spots on the high points.

2 -
Always looking for original, better date VF20-VF35 Barber quarters and halves, and a quality beer.6 -
Ron - I agree, the 45 is the better coin, and I would pay more for it than the 50.
Dave - Good looking toughie. Thanks for posting.
