I think these may take a few years to reach their potential assuming they beat out the Jackie. If they are not displaced by any subsequent issue their appreciation should grow, especially of gold rises or holds.

Does anyone know why the first spouse series has Nancy Reagan but not Rosaline Carter who was earlier? And then next was Hillary. Why did this series have a gap and not continue?

She missed out because her hubby is still living.

That would be if Trump would appoint a new US mint director and they would immediately melt all remaining first spouse coins in inventory.

    Happy days are here again...

you know it takes months if not years to confirm a mint director?

Also how can any republican director remove Nancy Reagan coins before its 2018 sellout?

    Neo,
Well the way I read that documentation you provided that was informative, it confirms that the existing Mint Director post is now vacant since that Congress is out officially, and the new director can be appointed by Trump, and the new Congress then just has to approve it. I do not understand your Nancy Reagan comment as they were 2016 coins and can be stopped any day by the Mint.

  • I feel the same way with the 2015 silver proof sets and Silver Halves. They will not be beat in mintage this year the 2016 is already higher with the limited edition proof set and silver proof set. I feel at 24-28 a piece the Halves have room to grow like the 2012's did. I am also saying the $120 raw 2012's will go down in value from here.

And I wonder who would submit such a low level coin for grading. Someone knew something I suppose.

I believe the last 5 years has shown we really don't know what real end collector demand is for generic $5 commemoratives.

By generic I mean those without a unique feature(HOF) or a Bison like hook..............

Don't we have the Jackie Robinson to give you some insight about the demand for the lowest mintage generic commems?

Even if the sales end up slightly below the Jackie R unc., I don't think it's going to provide that much bigger a boost in value than the Jackie. Back when the Jackie coin was made 20 years ago, that low mintage was unusual and stood out as a very low mintage. What with all the low-mintage products being made in the interim, having the title of the "lowest mintage commem" gives us little more than bragging rights at best, IMO. To use an old idiom, it's being the big fish in a small pond.

These are surprisingly dead on Feebay. Even with the second lowest mintage one would think that they would be doing a lot better than they are. I have had a 70 FS on the BST w/not a single inquiry. As some have noted the $5 golds may be on the way to the bottom interest wise.

Even the spouses with tiny mintages other than Eleanor aren't doing much. Sure glad that I sold some of the past keys for moon money a few years back. I only wish that I had sold my Jackie unc years back. I could have re-bought now and pocketed $2K. Ugh.

I've done O.K. like most here. Decision at present is what to do with returnable raw coins. May send some back.

Like most, only so much fund wise that I can tie up. Being that these seem pretty slow, I'm thinking of keeping some and sending some back to hedge my bet and free up some $. There is always that next one that I'll need funds for...

I don't see the issue with someone returning coins to the US Mint. They clearly state a 7-day return policy and one of the reasons for return that they list on the form is "Changed my mind". It would seem that deciding to send coins back, when one believes the upside is limited, would be well within this category. By they way, I am keeping mine because I like the design.

This thread has been a rollercoaster. From the highs of flipping for a big profit to the lows of returning for a refund. Great design, I hope to pick up a proof example in the future.

It really is a great design and most love the National Parks. That's the irony of why sales were so low.

The story of Muir and Roosevelt exploring Yosemite on horseback for weeks as Muir made his case that it should be a national park is really cool. Even when it was made in national park, some really bad decisions were made in the early years, including allowing ranchers to graze cattle.

What is a key date? The coin with the lowest mintage or the one that is the most expensive in the series? These could come in 100 below Jackie but still only be fetching $700 in the near future.

Funny how many on this thread talk (complain) about "only" doubling their investment in a very short period of time. A mutual fund or stock returning 10% per year ( which is an above average return) would take seven years to double. These haven't doubled in a few days and they're already "losers" . The last four raw unc $5 to sell on eBay already went at/over $500 each. Great design and low mintage - I think the coin will do well ( esp ms70s )

    Double would b fantastic.
Problem is, absent a store or TRS, etc $500 nets about $440 or less after all fees and not so free shipping. Is that worth the hassle of dealing w selling on eBay?

About $65 profit in a week on raw isn't too bad. PCGS FS ms70s are pushing $900 - 3 sold at that price - and a NGCms70 sold pre sell out for $625. There is a raw unc at $466 in an auction with two days to go which will be interesting. A Pcgs ms70 nonFS is also up with a starting bid of $895

  • RaufusRaufus Posts: 6,817 ✭✭✭✭✭

I've had 70FS on bst for days for less - crickets. Still think 70 FS will do well. Subjective of course whether $60 or so worth all eBay hassles

We are at least a couple more weeks away from knowing the final figures. My returns are just going out today and I'm sure others will follow. The Mint isn't exactly prompt getting to returns anyway, at least in my experiences. I ended up sending four back due to blemishes/spots.

I'm sure a lot of people loaded up on the graded stuff. If the numbers come in too high I suspect they'd lose the most.

The raws will follow the same fate and any ebay sales would likely get returned.

The Unc Clads have also doubled in price and are in no jeopardy of being oversold.

If you look at the PCGS pop report for the $5MS....PCGS has graded only 236 in all grades and labels, which makes it physically impossible for people to have "loaded up" prior to the recent potential run up.

    I love looking at stats...............

Since December 31, 2016 we now have another MS70(non FS) added to the POP report.

Things are really tightening up now, folks.

It also took a few years for the JR commem to depreciate from about $5K to $1K. If it becomes dethroned as to being the key date of the modern gold commem series I can see it depreciating even more.

Over 500 of these NP gold sold the last couple weeks of Dec., and my three just arrived at PCGS for grading. So if you use modern service it may be 3 weeks at least before these show up in PCGS pop reports. I expect a big surge of graded NP coins in MS70 by the end of the month. There are already 7 modern gold unc. commemoratives that have lower PCGS pops than this in MS70, including the new Mark Twain, so I do not expect this to be all that much better in price than them on average.

Actually it's more like 2k sold within the last 2 month. By the end of Oct., the Mint had only sold approx 3.2K of the unc. Although the pop on MS70 will most definitely increase, that does not hold true with the F/S MS70. That's the slab to keep an eye on. Buy the slab & not the coin. B)
