Goldminers: Thank you very much for sending me funds for (2) Craft beers! You are a gentleman and a scholar on all matters other than Boys Town related issues.
And, of course, if something crazy happens and someone buys up 3,000+ additional Boys Town MS Gold Commems, rest assured I will send you the funds for (4) Craft beers!! HIghly unlikely, but you never know!

Mitch, I really do need to apologize because I just bought one (1) Boys Town MS Gold Commem. I realize this purchase lowers your chance of quaffing the free beers, hence my heartfelt apology.
That would be a crazy low number! Possibly the lowest mintage for a modern commem coin of any denomination for a long, long time. Jackie Unc $5 held that spot for nearly 20 years.

No promises, but I think you may be OK Martin. This was a coin that the US Mint suggested in their Christmas catalog. I would hope they would not disappoint those who ordered the coin (on backorder) a few days before the sellout. And what a Christmas present this will be for some!
If it makes you feel any better (anyone out there), I had 99 coins in my cart yesterday and decided to wait to buy them since the online message was that the coins would be fulfilled on 12/28/17 (or something like that). Those would have been a nice pile to be waiting for too. Just another “fish that got away”.

Thanks for the insight. sorry on the 99. I too was thinking of waiting and stumbled onto the back order. I figured they would take orders untill late December and make up the difference it is after all a com and the boys town is on the hook untill there are profits at least that is what I though
Any guesses on the final tally? I’m betting on a last minute rush because plenty of folks knew sales would at least end in a few weeks. My guess, 3,067.

This one will certainly be the lowest minted, but I'm not so sure it will be the highest priced $5 commemorative...Jackie shows 71 MS70 coins after twenty years of submissions at PCGS and the Boys total is already at 251. My guess, the Jackie MS70 is still King and the 69's and below come along for the ride.
Wow 2999 mintage , I have 3 BT $5 Unc's . I will send them to PCGS then hold until their price reflects the CRAZY LOW MINTAGE . May give them to the grand kids .

Perhaps much of this difference is that TPGS grading was much stricter in the past.
Increasingly, the Mint's low mintage offerings recede quickly into the background after issue and early flips. "Keys" now cluster so close to so many others among the modern commems, the plats and the first spouses, that it almost makes no difference.
I did something I've never done before, and flipped my MS70 Boys Town. Got a grand for it. I'm betting that'll look good after a few months.

I think you are very likely right.
I was offered $975 for my NP PCGS MS70FS and turned it down. BIG mistake. They tanked well before BT was known to be the key.
A coin goes on sale
Nobody likes it
Nobody buys it
It goes off sale
It is low mintage because nobody liked it
Everyone wants one because nobody liked it in the first place.

I’m getting very thirsty.

The coin is on backorder now? Interesting.

Do items like this, that go on back order, tend to end up being declared "sold out" before they're shipped?
They declared it "sold out" today if that helps answer your question.

So what is the final number sold?
A few days ago, it was sub-2,700. Final number probably comes out on Tuesday.

I have 4 on back order, place on the 5th. Any guesses if i get them?
Thanks

...and I know the same thing is said about Jackie, but the Boys Town coin is REALLY ugly!
(Full Disclosure: I own several Boys Town coins.)
I ordered one on 12/06 it just went from backordered to processing.
Martin,
Have your 4 coins shipped?
Radioman
They shipped yesterday.
We should know today how many they sold

Mine has shipped also

...or the MINT's quality is improving?
Does the mint included all orders shipped in the report? Or does it also included those being processed?

Here's a warning parable for coin collectors...

avoid modern comms (especially gold) unless you collect them.
ZeroHedge makes debut at White House press corps briefing
Do I have this logic down?
A coin goes on sale
Nobody likes it
Nobody buys it
It goes off sale
It is low mintage because nobody liked it
Everyone wants one because nobody liked it in the first place.
That sums it up pretty well
