That number is going down by at least 5 from me alone!! Returning the dogs I just got. I bet it ends lower than the JR coin after returns. I am pretty confident it will end up the new key since only 26 returns will put in under the JR sales.
Very likely it will be the key after final adjustments are made. Even if it's not, I don't see the coin going under final issue price (about $376) again. Congrats to everyone who purchased them. (I bought one.)
Now to what I consider to be the real winner - the 2015 Silver Proof Set, which went off sale Dec. 31. At 387,460 it's now the key set in its series, dethroning the previous champ 2012 set which was 395,443. As a bonus, there was no "Limited Edition" silver proof set in 2015, which means that the 2015-S silver Kennedy half mintage is equal to the set mintage, and much lower than the 2012-S silver half total mintage of 440,395. The 2012-S silver half currently sells for $100 and up. The 2015-S is currently available at around $25 to $30, and I picked up several in the past week rather than investing heavily in the $5 unc. National Park gold. We'll see over time which is the better deal. My bet is on the Kennedy.
My guess is about 4-5% of the 742 coins sold in the last week will be returned. If so, this will wind up being the key. Anyone follow historical average % of retuns to the Mint?
I just got mine this afternoon and it looks perfect. I won't be returning it but I'm curious as to how long the mint's return period is. Can someone doing a return ask for a replacement or is a refund now the only option? It will certainly be interesting to see the final numbers.

Since the mint reports total sales on Tuesdays at 5:00ET, we should have the final numbers two weeks from today. Right? It looks like it will be very close as to whether or not this will be the new key date to the series.

I'm curious - do you think the one you send back will be worth less than issue price? The last "buy it now" sold for $435 and the last true auction brought $482, both raw with box and COA.

This sets up an interesting scenario. I would think there might have been a few larger buyers the last week. If so, would almost be in their interest to be very picky, save the likely 70's, and send rest back to ensure final mintage is 27 less. Could mean the difference between $50 profit per coin or potentially over a $1000 coin... !

There were 742 sold in the final week. A 5% return rate would mean 37 coins returned. Assuming all were refunded and none were replaced, that would put the net mintage at 5164, making it the key by 10 coins.
The latest 1997 Jackie Robinson eBay sale was a PCGS MS69 for $970 in a true auction.
Absolutely. I expect at the very least a 4% return regardless of replacements which would make this a winner (design aside.) After speaking tonight to a well respected coin cohort who has analyzed much Mint data, the 4% assumption is extremely reasonable. He has seen over the years a 10 - 20% return rate. Tincup's assessment is not unheard of though (Hunt brothers.) Only speculation, however holding on to NPS reigns supreme.

Surprised by that many sales at the very end. It makes no difference, IMHO, if this coins falls slightly lower or slightly higher than the Robinson, they're essentially of the same scarcity. This Natl. park coin really had to have sales in the lower 4,000's to make any significant leap in secondary market value. Good news for anyone who bought it is that there is no downside.
This may be a dumb question but can we assume that the NPS production number of 5201 can never go up but in a couple of weeks it could go down?

Normal return rates may not apply in this case, when it is a low mintage item. Even a 4% may not be a given. How many of the 2016 silver liberty medals were returned?
Manorcourtman may have the right idea to return the dogs... a few more like that will 'make' this a key date (if replacements are not requested). Will not take many at all.

I think so. Not production but sales number. Returns, CC issues, etc should only decrease this. Can't increase as off sale.
It's worth noting, with numbers between Jackie and this coin so close, that "final final" audited mintages can end higher than last known sales. The 2013 5 star general $5 unc gained 9 coins in the final audit.
As noted earlier in the thread, offering the two commemorative coins this year is what made the NP MS Gold a possible key. It does not happen that often, but it could happen in the future making a new future key.
I personally don't think there are 5000 serious modern gold commemorative collectors out there, but never less a key is a key for a series and Jackie could be dethroned.
I don't know what the policy is for the mint on replacements when they are no longer allowed to sell the NP coins in 2017. They may just offer a refund instead of a replacement.
The one I ordered last week has a very slight mark on the obverse that will prevent it from a 70, but still worth keeping.

With the sales on the half dollar unc. this low, I did break down and buy a couple at the Philly mint gift shop this morning.
The FS pop has to be low. In pcgs MS70 and FS.... that is the key....although I think Jackie PCGS MS70 FS has fewer....But they sold for thousands for a long time. Jackie did start to drop before all this though didn't it?

Don't think they did FS when Jackie came out. Just MS70.
Yes, Jackie went down hard before any of this with the national park issue. Jackie about half of what it was a few years back. I got killed on my 70.

If anyone didn't get these halves before the deadline, and you live in the area you can still get them from the Philadelphia Mint gift shop in their lobby, I just purchased a couple this morning. Not sure why they are still selling them, but my understanding is that the gift shop is run by some outsourced company like Aramark, and maybe they have no rules on ending sales on pre-2017 coins.

$24.95 each. I don't recall the selling price on the Mint's website, so I don't know if this gift shop price is higher or lower or the same.
Overdate, to answer your question, I didn't look for the 5$ gold today so I can't answer your question. When I was there a few weeks back, they only had the proof $5 gold, not the unc. I think the gift shop phone number probably can be found somewhere on the Mint's website.
NOTE: Anyone going to the Philly Mint gift shop to buy these, if you haven't been there before, you have to go thru a security thing, i.e. put all metal items thru a scanning machine. I hate doing all that just to get into the gift shop, but because I've been there before and I think the security folks recognize me, I can joke with them a tiny bit.

That's up to you. The unc. half is the key coin in the modern clad half dollar series issued by the Mint. Only time will tell, if they appreciate in value. If you don't have any, why not. Not much of a gamble at $30 a pop.

I will have 3 each of the NPS gold unc. in separate unopened boxes arriving tomorrow. I was considering keeping them unopened, but I sort of agree with the concept to send back any "dogs" which helps values later if it is the "key" mintage. The 70's do command a premium, so unopened boxes might move up in price, too, making it complicated.
Maybe I should FLIP a coin on it...heads I open, tails I don't. LOL

Thanks for your advice. I will open them and will see if I can help lower the mintage, or not...
They have to look really, really good for me to keep them as my MS70 vision, is poor at best.
I was stunned when I first saw this thread posted because I was hoping that the issue would continue to fly under the radar and wondered why anyone would intentionally attempt to draw attention to the low mintage. But, what was done, was done.
I have a number of these because I like to buy the modern gold $5 commems when I like the design and I actually like this design. The last batch of coins I purchased was delivered today and the coins are perfect under 5x with no hits, gouges, scratches, haze, fingerprints or anything else on them. However, the fulfillment center sent the four coins in their boxes within an outer box the size of a traditional shoebox and they didn't use any interior packing material aside from my invoice. Therefore, when I signed for my box, it was rattling around as if everything might be destroyed. Again, the coins are perfect, but there was no additional cushioning agent included in the outer box.
I agree that if you bought multiples, you should send back the ones with defects. A few key date coins will be worth more than a lot of non-key coins. I only bought one, and it is still in the box, so I will keep mine. I actually like the design too, and love national parks, so it is a win win for me.
My daughter ordered (27) of these because she got a challenge from AMEX to spend $10,000 in a couple months to earn a bonus 100,000 points! So, now she has (27) of these on the way PLUS a business class ticket round trip to Singapore and Thailand in March on (one of) the best airlines in the world (worth $5,000 or $6,000). A good deal for her to be sure!
But, I will happily "bet" forum members here a craft beer at a Long Beach coin show that when 2017 Gold Commems are also taken into account, this MS Gold National park will NOT be the series mintage low coin. Who's ready to put a craft beer on the line at a Long Beach show? Just send me a PM to lock in our "bets". You must be 21 years of age "to play" and to buy me that beer though
As always, just my 2 cents.

Who's ready to put a craft beer on the line at a Long Beach show? Just send me a PM to lock in our "bets". You must be 21 years of age "to play" and to buy me that beer though
As always, just my 2 cents.

I did some research on the 5 Star Generals gold Uncs. The last sales report dated Jan 2014 ( these came out in 2013) had a number lower than the official mintage which came out 9 coins higher. I don't think this will be the low mintage either.
