Patches...I guess if a scratch is old enough PCGS lets it pass. I think if I submitted it, it would take more than 1 try to get it in a problem free holder.
Patches - I share your frustrations. That 01-S is a damaged coin, and shouldn't be in a straight graded holder. These type of coins being in graded holders do depress values in the price guides, but that can be a benefit for a selective buyer.
Mike - Congrats on the newp half.
Jeff - I think you've got the criteria down, now if only the grading services actually applied them consistently..........

Luck does happen- my '14 and '05 O AU 58 Halves were both raw submissions as well.
I just replace my 06-O. Hoping it will be my next +! The surfaces are so refective it looks like it has color it doesn't. Fully Struck Luster Bomb with just a hint of Rev toning! I already upload pic's if yal wanna see it.
I picked up my '97 O 50C PCGS AU 58 at the Post Office yesterday. I didn't want to risk having the Mailman deliver it; I figured Darryll drove to Tampa Friday night and was waiting to mug my mailman.
Here it is in it's new holder:
It's a great strike for a New Orleans coin, but I'm guessing this one's not worthy of a + grade. I still really like it though; I really thought I would never get one in AU let alone a 58!
Jeff, I think your 97-O is one of the nicest coins you've posted, plus or not. As you mentioned, the strike is excellent, but more importantly, I have to struggle to see any surface distractions. I'd say its a 20K coin.
Darrell - Are all 5 97-O's in PC58 slabs worth the same amount? For that matter, are all 3 96-O's worth the same amount? I say definitely not, unless they all have the same look, luster, issues, strike, etc. One of them is going to have the right combination and be worth more. What I like as the right combination might be different than what you like, but in all likelihood, one will be more desirable, and be worth more. Unless we don't care what the coins look like, and only care that our hosts have slabbed them as 58. I'm sure you don't look at it that way any more than I do.

Verne, I don't think any 58 Barber 1/2 is worth near 20K except a micro O! And no not all 58's are the same! Anyone know how much Don's 04-S in 58 sold for or if it's still available. He paid somewhere in the 20K range for it. Time will tell!

Darrell, et al: All of the Surf City Coins that did not sell by the end of FUN, must have been
taken back by the consignor, as none were listed after the show was over. There were a few
that caught my eye and I was about to make an offer or two on a couple of them.
But, Poof... they were delisted !

Darrell, we all know you understand the Barber Half world better than any of us. Yes, a '96 O is definitely King. As I understand a roll of MS '97 O's was discovered in the 30's but there have been no hoards of '96 O uncovered. That will ultimately prove the tough one.
I'm sure this has been mentioned before, but Vern is the Barber image master. I've seen several of the coins he has imaged in hand, and they are spot on!
Why is the "S" mint mark on a 14-S quarter always so mushy? Maybe a 14-S quarter with razor sharp S is a 20K coin
Joe - I can't recall seeing a crisp 'S' on a 14-S qtr, and I think Darrell must be right on why.
Justin - When you acquire yours, I'm betting it'll have just the right look, and cost way less than $20K.
Mike - Your 04-S has just the right look to me, which would be worth a few grading points in detail if I were buying it. I'm guessing your former 97-O half is one of the many you wish you'd never sold.

Let me =know when you get the 58+ thing figured out. From what I've seen a 58+ needs to have:
A great strike
Great surfaces
Minimal chatter
Overall Eye appeal
Is that consistant with your thoughts?
...as a matter of fact, I just started dates sets for "Ginja Max AU 58 - 58+"
as well as a "Ginja Max Mint State Set" .... Which will be a very slow set to complete
and as if the 58 set will be any faster ....

Silly me, I had no inkling of what 97-O Half everyone was alluding to... So, I checked out
your Registry set and Lo and Behold, there was a very nice MS 64 in the 97-O slot !

having to spend $7500 for the coin. But...I'm not and so, I won't !

JMW I just looked at the 3 in F or better I have and they all are like Verne's. I guess the punch they were using was past it's useful life!

My 1893 TDR Half was graded yesterday at PCGS; it crossed as a 58. I really like the look of this coin and was planning on replacing the '93 Half in my Everyman Set with it.
