Jeff & Darrell - It was in a 53 when I owned it. Now it's in the collection that just retired.

Mike - Wow! Dr Pete is selling his half collection? Now that is news. Guess I need to save up my shekels for that 97-O.

One more thing. I think the PCGS digit album is wonderful, but using it with a box of 20 showcase is the absolute best. What a great way to see some of one's favorite coins together in one album.

in left field. I just downloaded Windows 10 on the Sony
Vaio Lap Top.

It was tough enough before getting images up....now ?
Omg !!!

I can't even get my email now on the lap top. It keeps
falling off....I have a few choice words I'd like to tell Cortina.

I'll be civil. I like it here. 😎

There is absolutely no way I would download windows 10 at this point! I'm sick of that little icon popping up everyday asking me to do so! I bought a new computer just because Microsoft quit supporting windows 95 which was a rock solid operating system. Did I purchase a computer with windows 8? You bet your arse I didn't! Windows 7 here and I am pleased with it. My wife has a puter with windows 8 and it is a nightmare in my opinion. I wouldn't consider windows 10 until it has been out awhile. I wonder how many of the programs I use...mainly my camera software that will not work with windows 10?

I hear you Darrell. I also have my Sony Vaio with Windows 7 ....
my girlfriend just installed Windows 10 ... hates it - but I laugh,
she's much more computer illiterate that I am - so - I thought I'd
be ok. Its a jumble, but after all the headaches I was having before -
I'm ok with it [ so far ].

I'm using Windows 10 and I like it. But then I've been using Windows 8 for the last 3 years.

All my programs work just fine with 10- no issues.

It is true that Janice and I very recently decided to sell our registry set. MFH knew nothing about this as Janice and I were sworn to secrecy until all the paperwork was completed. Mike had contacted me a few weeks ago about posting "a few" of our coins and I knew that if I declined he would be suspicious. That put me into a bit of a bind, but I thought, OK a few coins get posted in this forum. Then he went into a year by year posting with Duckor and Friend coins and I felt bad about MFH not knowing what was about to happen.

Please accept my sincere apology for any conflict of interest that this may have caused. MFH is a good friend of mine and he does wonders for this coin forum. I love Barber halves and will continue to watch this forum and post when I can. I want this forum to continue to be educational and do not intend for it to be used as a promotional tool.

I went back to Windows 7 this morning. Windows 10 wouldn't allow me
to copy images and put them into my computer's file. It took me an hour
to get into my email - and then it kept dropping off. { Ridiculous }

Now: I can show off this little beauty: Its only a 64 - but a nicely struck one, IMHO:

Somewhat of an improvement over my AU 58.....

Thanks Vern, I liked the surfaces of the 03 Nickel very much. Great strike, too.

I have added these dates to the Registry Forums for the "BIG THREE BARBER HALF SETS" : 1905, 1906 and today, 1907.

There is some duplication - as the collector who sold first [ Friend] his coins went to the two other collectors [ Duckor and Shireman ]

When Duckor's set sold, Shireman [ and his spouse, Janice ] bid on a few of the Duckor coins. So, you'll see the same coin imaged

a few times. { ie: 1907- Phila issue }

Had a great coin day in Iowa Tuesday, meeting up with Doug and Jim for a barber extravaganza. Seated qtrs were also well represented. There were more quality barbers in one spot than on any bourse floor anywhere this year.

Mike - I hope he gets a chance to buy it back. By coincidence, I was able to add that very date Tuesday, thanks Doug.

Dennis - That's the same 09-O. Also, it sold at Heritage in December, 2008.

That's a very sweet 07-S Quarter, Vern. Extremely nice of Doug to
sell it - you two ( or 3 ) guys must have a field day swapping or
selling coins to each other. Congrats !!

That's what I thought about the 09-O - a recent HA.com sale.
Couldn't immediately place it. IMHO, I think it's the nicer of the
three AU 58's out there. Although, I still wait for the day George
Hamilton (yes, not a Beetle ) to sell his undergraded AU 55. It's
booming with luster and has the best eye appeal of any AU -09-O
Quarter I have seen.

Until then my pristine open spot in my Eagle Certified Album will
remain. Heck, I have a few VF's that need upgrading - ie:
1901-O - 07-S - and 14-S.... Not to mention I have none of the
"Big Three" in any grade.

EDIT: The Registry Forum now has Halves from Shireman, Duckor and Friend: thru 1908
Never have owned any Half as nice as these coins. Amazing stuff.

I agree, that 96-O should get an au 58 ...no CAC though as it's got too much chatter on the Obverse.

Have not looked at the Everyman Registry lately as I have been wrapped up in the Gem sets. I am still
sorry Don retired his set, but, a guys got to do what a guys got to do. Seeing my friend, Peter S., retire
his set is also a concern, but there is another set about to take over, my friend's set SROTAG should
be ranked up with Peter's.

Don't forget to look at the Registry Forum - you'll enjoy seeing these coins side by side by date and mint.
There are some truly amazing coins with these sets !!

I know the grade, and with less than 30 in this grade and above at PCGS, this is a solid coin. (this would be a super key in the Morgan series) With that said, I think your lighting techniques point out the minor abrasions more than they would appear in hand.

Its not an AU 58 - but it sure was nice....

This sold in August, 2011. Heritage ANA Auction: $4,168.75 all in.

Mike - Our meeting in Iowa was what coin collecting was all about IMO. Sharing opinions on each others coins, and learning in the process. A good meal at a local BBQ place also added to the enjoyment.
And George H now has an 09-O qtr in PC58, perhaps the one you recall has been upgraded. He had it at the BCCS meeting at the ANA this year. It's not the one Dennis mentioned is currently on ebay.

Justin,you are correct about my lighting technique. It definately minimizes returns on ebay. The 96-O is by far the key to a set of Barber 1/2's in AU or better. There are 2 dates with lower total Pops in AU but they have much higher populations in MS!

PS the POP in 58 and above at PCGS is 25! I doubt there are many NGC's left as the last 2 58's including this one came out of NGC holders.

Time to watch the Pop Reports! The 97-S 1/2 in 58 just went from 5 to 3 in 58! The coin DK had on ebay that sold on Heritage for chump change is in Limbo. Wonder if it is in for conservation. The other almost has to be ????? lets say I'm Purdy sure and think they are trying for a +! I'll bite my tongue at this!

Of all the 09-O's I have seen or owned - this was the one I
wanted way back when - as at the time, it was a POP ONE
coin in AU 58.

I'm thrilled to have landed this 09-O .... and many thanks for the hint, Dogwood.
The other 09-O that sold recently on Heritage had pock marks [ IMO ] - This coin
sold in April , 2008 - and as I reviewed my notes on Heritage - I knew I wanted
this. As Liz Taylor was fond of saying " The price of butter and Diamonds keep going up..."

I have really enjoyed looking at these sets - individually - and am in awe of many coins.

I have not shown this Half often - it was the start of my current Half Dollar set. Its from

Liz Coggan - purchased at the Chicago ANA show in 2011 - immediately after my Barber

Auction. Barberkeys' friend, Glen M. was looking at this in great detail for what seemed

like hours before he decided to pass... it took me seconds to want it ... it was too expensive

but, when has that stopped me before ?

I posted this coin on the thread back in late June. I purchased it raw and submitted it to PCGS; it came back as an AU 53. Some of you thought it was properly graded, some thought it was undergraded. I fell into the camp of undergraded. Rather than send it back to PCGS I cracked it out and submitted it to NGC; it returned in the AU 58 holder. It appears to me that PCGS focuses more on marks than wear, and NGC the opposite for a 58. I'm not going to bother sending it back to PCGS because I'm fairly confident they would put it in a 55 holder.

There's more than one way to grade a coin.

NGC is a details grader, while PC focuses on surfaces in these grades. I tend to like a PCGS 58 more than a NGC 58, I am fine with a little more rub if it means a nice lustrous eye-appealing coin. The chatter did hurt that coin's chances of going above a 55, but also the significant field friction and the brightness didn't do it any favors.

Jeff,Your example is exactly why PCGS 58's sell for substantially more than NGC 58's. I would wager the majority of NGC 58's that would cross to PCGS have been crossed. If you will recall the 1st 96-O NGC 58 was bodybagged twice by PCGS before it made it into a holder!

Are you referring to your coin that Justin posted? Was the coin in for crossover and DNC or was it submitted raw and actually bagged?

Mine crossed on the 1st attempt. As Justin pointed out the way I take pictures greatly amplifies any marks,etc.

The other was Scott's coin. Bodybagged twice(cleaned),then they(David Kahn) cracked it out. I can't remember if it bagged raw one time.

Jeff - The slabbing life of your 1900-S half is interesting, and points out how subjective grading is. Theoretically, grading is an evaluation of marks, strike and luster with eye appeal thrown in as a mitigating factor. Supposedly, eye appeal "adds a little, and forgives a lot", in the overall grade of a coin. But each person's (grader's) definition of eye appeal is different. So how can grading be consistent?

Mike V - Your thoughts of NGC as a details grader, with PCGS focusing on surfaces is generally accurate IMHO, in XF and AU grades.

Also, the dealer who said "I don't grade 'em, I just price 'em", makes a lot of sense in the actual coin marketplace.

This 96-o half showed up in the mail today.
It was a bit of a limb-walk best offer BIN on the bay.
It's a keeper. Quite lustrous and problem free.
Not seeing an issue with it straight grading, a little wipe or slide marks on Liberty that doesn't even travel into the fields would be the caveat.
No wear. Might call it a 58-61. Won't know for a few months until I finish gathering for my free 8 submission. Wish me luck.
But I'm happy to have it.
