I purchased the '04 S in a NGC AU 58 holder back in May from JJ Teaparty (thanks to a tip from Lenny). I was nervous as heck when I submitted it to PCGS for crossover, but all was good in the end.
I purchased the '04 O from Discovery Bay Rare coins at an eBay Auction. I was the only bidder, but the reserve price wasn't for the feignt of heart.
My set is very diverse in appearance; I have darkly toned coins like these, blast white original looking, and colorful toed coins as well. Although most collectors prefer to have their entire set have a certain matched look, I prefer the eclectic approach; each coin has it's own individual character and charm.
The last three posts of Gem MS Halves - is getting a little{?} out of control. So, instead of adding to the previous coins from the top three sets [past] I have decided to just continue with the next date; I left off with 1894.
The Shireman and Duckor coins are imaged by PCGS True View while the Friend coins were imaged by Superior Galleries Auction House some time back.

Nice comparisons between the Shireman, Duckor, and Friend coins. The 95-S Duckor and Shireman coins ARE the exact same coin, shot with different lighting/technique.
I like my 93-S better as a 65 than I do the Duckor as a 66 (it looks a little wiped to me). The intense colors on my 92-O and 93-O are intense. My 94-O has great prooflike features. My 94-S is ex-Eliasberg, as is Dale's 92-O micro O.
Keep 'em coming Mike. Hope it isn't too much work to do those composites. Reminds me of the show in Long Beach when all three complete sets were displayed side-by-side. Around 2005 IIRC.
Nice to see an 09s quarter in 58 Vern. Was looking at pops this week, noting that outside of the Big 3 there's only four dates left that have single digit PCGS pops in each of the 4 AU grades: 06o, 07s, 09o & 09s. I think those are pretty accurately scarce ones, but 09o aside, I wonder what the deal is with that? Mintages aren't low...just randomly overlooked?
We're all born MS70. I'm about a Fine 15 right now.
I'm having a bit of a problem again - with the PCGS site - this time its the images not pulling up on the Registry for the three Half sets I'm using. There is a little blue box with a "?" inside it - instead of an image. I'd say 2/3 of the images are now hidden.
Its always something !
I'll edit this once I get some of the images I want into Photobucket !
The 1909-S Quarter is one tough nut - I have a 53 and a 63 at the moment but I think the 53 is going away fairly soon. I remember trying to sell Labelman's AU 58 - I have mentioned this before - I had no bites - both he and I were really puzzled !

Vern - that 1906-O Quarter you showed off - your's or Doug's ? Regardless, as you mentioned - it's a tough one in 58. The one in my current set is an AU 55
which I purchased from Mr. Kennedy - who we never hear from anymore. I don't frequent the Seated Thread very often, I assume he posts there much more frequently.
For the sake of discussion, here's my old 1906-O ( sold at the ANA Chicago in 2011 ): PCGS MS 63 ( I do not believe I ever had a high grade AU in that set ).
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ I just checked the Registry, still 2/3 of the images in Duckor's old set are unavailable. The other two sets suffer as well, but no where as bad. I might have to get resourceful, and copy the Heritage images of Duckor's and Friend's sets. Missing coins from Peter's set will be close to an impossibility unless this problem self corrects.
Edit:
I just read that PCGS is aware of the True View images problem. Even the Virtual Albums are wiped clean. Including all of Peter Shiremans set images - and half of Steve Duckor's. I was able to copy some of Dale Friend's images.
Sorry.
A new pickup for my Everyman's Barber Half set arrived in the mail today; a 1897 O PCGS VF 35:
This coin replaces the VF 25 in my set. I think it's a decent coin- almost a 40. I hope it doesn't last in my set too long, however- still looking for the AU.
Jeff, Nice 97-O. I agree, it could have 40'd just as easily.
Jeff,I saw that coin on ebay...you paid up for it! I passed very quickly. I'd like your opinion now that you have it hand. Looks like a coin if I submitted our hosts would slam.
Darrell- I agree the coin was not inexpensive, but as we all know better grades of this date rarely come up for sale. I believe it's a nicer coin than the 35 auctioned at Heritage last fall- it went for about $200 more than I paid. It's far from the nicest VF 35 coin I've seen, but also far from the worst. It has nice eye appeal, although I understand the toning isn't for everyone. I guess I don't see a reason why you think this coin should have been bagged.
Jeff, I've seen nicer coins with that look bagged for cleaning. PCGS seems to be really relaxing their standards in regards to cleaning for some lately. Of course this is my opinion. Lots and Lottsa coins I wouldn't touch being graded problem free these days. Look at the 03-S in 40 that sold on the bay today! It really is becoming a buy the coin not the holder these days...even many that have a CAC sticker!
PS I wouldn't bid on that last coin at Heritage either!
I'm still looking for a nice VF. I have an "ugly" (as Jeff liked to call it) F12. I'll probably never feel like paying what a VF would cost though. Which means I will probably never an 04-S in VF either.
Mike - I was selling the 06-O qtr on ebay for a friend, and Doug made the purchase for his collection. I don't know if Walt looks at the forum at all anymore, he has been selling his std qtrs, but still has some nice early qtrs. Nice 12-D dime, by the way.
Jeff - Possibly they net graded your 97-O.
Dr Pete - Your 97-O is a killer (not that your others are dogs).
Craig - Throw in your 09-S and you've got 3 of those 4 dates in 58.
MFH, So many 98-O's let me toss in another
1898-O Uncentered Broadstrike Mint Error
To Err Is Human.... To Collect Err's Is Just Too Much Darn Tootin Fun!
Yes, the 97-O is a real nice coin. It has the pedigree from Abe Kosoff, so it's neat that way, too. Has great luster.
I am really enjoying MFH's presentation of the Barber halves. Not only is my 95-S the former Duckor coin, but so is the 98-O. The 98-O is especially difficult to find with a green bean. The Friend coin made it, but the Shireman/Duckor coin did not. All of Duckor's coins were submitted to CAC prior to auction.
Steve Duckor put together such an amazing set and had great help from David Akers. Mr. Akers was buying the best Barber halves from sales like Emery-Nichols, Norweb, and Eliasberg, many before prices went up. He had a great eye for quality and it shows in all the coins he saved, many sold to Dr. Duckor and Dr. Price, and included great gold coins as well as the Barbers.
One thing I realized on Dale's coins' images from Heritage - its the single shots have the most details - but are pale in comparison to the slab shots.
I went with the single shots from HA.com/ for the next group:
The 1900-O half is extremely tough to find in MS 65 or above. The three examples shown are all graded PCGS MS 66. The Shireman and Friend examples have stronger strikes (NOT full strikes, as this date just doesn't seem to come that way), and satin finish, whereas the Duckor/Norweb coin has amazing proof-like surfaces, but a much weaker strike. The Eliasberg example was sold not too long ago and has a pretty decent strike and sits in an NGC MS 67 holder. In many ways, this issue is more difficult to find in full gem/superb gem than is the 1904-S or the 1896-O. Seeing three MS 66 examples (all different coins) in one view together is a treat to us all. Thanks, MFH.
Vern, I think it's pretty safe to say that all 1900-O Barbers are semi key dates. I love that Paesan Quarter.
Jeff, It's always a sad occasion when a Barber set is retired. Really pleased that the owner opened up the images. Just missing the 92-P in 58+. That's one wonderful looking collection. When and if, this set gets put on the market, there will be a clamoring for some of these dates ( I see the 12-D has already sold .... Lol.... With the sale price posted ! ) Where in the world did that 97-O come from ?
I've been hammering our newest #1 Everyman Owner to release his images for ages now !! No more excuses !! J.H.C. !!!
Mike Hayes ~~~~~~~~~~~~ Coin collecting is not a hobby, it's an obsession !
Jeff, I won't feel like I'm number 1 until I am #1. I have a sneaky suspicion I won't be there for long.
Mike,That 97-O was from a Stacks Baltimore sale several years ago. The underbidder was cut off due to not establishing a higher credit limit with Stacks.
I don't know if you retire it yourself. Mike hasn't been able to add one of his oldies to one of his new sets because it was part of his retired set.
I accidently missed a removal request one time. When PCGS pulled the coin from my set they retired it. I believe that is in the rules. Luckily I was able to apologize and my set was unretired.
Yes, get in touch with BJ Searles who heads up the Registry program. That is if you retired a set in error.
If you retired a set and want to use part of it in the same category it was retired in, then no.
I have a 1910-Phila Half in AU 50 that was once in my lower graded set, and I retired the set. I since bought it back from another Forum member, and have been unable to register it in the standard Barber Half registry. It's easily added to a varieties set of Halves even though it's not a variety. One of these days, I'll send it to PCGS for reholdering and assign a new serial number. Depends how much it costs to do this.
Mike Hayes ~~~~~~~~~~~~ Coin collecting is not a hobby, it's an obsession !
I would guess Don retired it for a reason, not just on a whim. Whether he can take it out of retirement or not I suppose is not certain, but if Mike can't put one coin bakc in his set I don't think Don will be able to put 72 of them back in his. Too bad, he was one coin short of a 58 set (the '07 S was a 55).
I'm surprised he only had one 58+; I know he was looking for them.
If Don wanted to resurrect his set - as I have done - its easy. Get in touch with BJ Searles. No harm, no foul. BTW: I did not notice that the 07-S was only a 55. But, I bet its a beauty !
Vern: Your 10-D, PC62 is why I continue to look for "looker" 62's. Very, very nice. My 99 PC62CAC that I bought raw in a bundle (from the old Stack's) a long time ago (value at the time $20). The others (1895 PC61, 1903 PC58, 1910 PC"bagged" cleaned). These auction deals are gone forever.
Craig - Very pretty 1899-P - and it looks much nicer than a 62.
Continuing on with the "Big Three" Barber Half Sets... until I have the time to copy the Gardner Collection - and the Sunnywood Collection. The next big set being built is the Srotag Collection. This collection only has a few images - but a very reliable source has mentioned that the collection will be professionally imaged this Spring.
Jeff - Interesting that Don Willis has retired his set. Seems like it hasn't been around that long.
Craig - That's a pretty nice '99 for only a 62. I remember when Stack's used to send out the coins coming up for auction to regular schmucks like me, before the auction. All one had to do was be a regular buyer and make sure they got back right away.
I went with the single shots from HA.com/ for the next group:
Don Willis (Surfcity) has retired his Everyman Barber Half set. Darrell now has the highest ranked active set again! Congrats Darrell!
Film at 11:00.
Jeff, It's always a sad occasion when a Barber set is retired. Really pleased that the owner opened up the images.
Just missing the 92-P in 58+. That's one wonderful looking collection. When and if, this set gets put on the market,
there will be a clamoring for some of these dates ( I see the 12-D has already sold .... Lol.... With the sale price posted ! )
Where in the world did that 97-O come from ?
I've been hammering our newest #1 Everyman Owner to release his images for ages now !! No more excuses !! J.H.C. !!!
Stay tuned: 1901 Barber Halves will be posted later today
.......and I get to show off my favorite Barber !! Ex: Queller
( formerly: NGC 65 Star )
Mike,That 97-O was from a Stacks Baltimore sale several years ago. The underbidder was cut off due to not establishing a higher credit limit with Stacks.
<< <i>Can a set be 'un-retired"? >>
I don't know if you retire it yourself. Mike hasn't been able to add one of his oldies to one of his new sets because it was part of his retired set.
I accidently missed a removal request one time. When PCGS pulled the coin from my set they retired it. I believe that is in the rules. Luckily I was able to apologize and my set was unretired.
<< <i>Can a set be 'un-retired"? >>
Yes, get in touch with BJ Searles who heads up the Registry program.
That is if you retired a set in error.
If you retired a set and want to use part of it in the same category it was
retired in, then no.
I have a 1910-Phila Half in AU 50 that was once in my lower graded set,
and I retired the set. I since bought it back from another Forum member,
and have been unable to register it in the standard Barber Half registry.
It's easily added to a varieties set of Halves even though it's not a variety.
One of these days, I'll send it to PCGS for reholdering and assign a new serial
number. Depends how much it costs to do this.
I'm surprised he only had one 58+; I know he was looking for them.
If Don wanted to resurrect his set - as I have done - its easy. Get in touch with BJ Searles.
No harm, no foul. BTW: I did not notice that the 07-S was only a 55. But, I bet its a beauty !
One of these days, I should get Gardner's images - and post them by date among these coins.
I do not believe that set was saved however - I know I can locate the images on Heritage however.
I am sure many came from the two retired sets above.
New Barber Purchases
My 99 PC62CAC that I bought raw in a bundle (from the old Stack's) a long time ago (value at the time $20). The others (1895 PC61, 1903 PC58, 1910 PC"bagged" cleaned). These auction deals are gone forever.
Craig - Very pretty 1899-P - and it looks much nicer than a 62.
Continuing on with the "Big Three" Barber Half Sets... until I have the time to copy
the Gardner Collection - and the Sunnywood Collection. The next big set being built
is the Srotag Collection. This collection only has a few images - but a very reliable
source has mentioned that the collection will be professionally imaged this Spring.
Craig - That's a pretty nice '99 for only a 62. I remember when Stack's used to send out the coins coming up for auction to regular schmucks like me, before the auction. All one had to do was be a regular buyer and make sure they got back right away.
It's not having what you want, it's wanting what you've got.
This afternoon, I received a flyer from Heritage, showing a coin I am familiar with.
It seems as though Dr. & Mrs. Shireman have decided to sell their Half Dollar collection.
I will no longer be posting Dr. Shireman's images on the U.S. Coin Forum as these coins
being for sale are contrary to PCGS posting rules on the U.S. Coin Forum, but are allowed
on the U.S. Coin Registry Forum.
I will continue my postings on the Registry Forum.
