I was noticing the mint mark location on the Barber 25C & 50C roaming to the left and right instead of being in the center underneath the tail. My 1892-O 25C (so far the only "Clashed Die" attributed by PCGS) mintmark is right in the center with part of the center tail feather appearing to missing just a skosh...I wonder if they used smaller mint mark punches early on or larger later on?

A new raw 1889 going off to our hosts for grading soon. It has Proof Like surfaces, but with the strike I suspect it's an MS coin. I think it's an easy 64 and maybe a 65.
oih8 - Bold die clash on your 92-O. Don't think they varied the size of the MM on qtrs, just positioning. Too bad, a micro 'O' qtr to match the half would be neat.
Craig - Congrats on the 10-D newp. Good looking.

Jeff...Looks like it to me...but I think it might have been graded an AU 50. There's a fine line between those two grades - especially on V Nickels. Nice coin, Vern. Good luck trying to locate an AU 1886 Nickel. That was the last coin I needed to complete my raw set in AU.

Great looking AU 58. Matches my 1894 that I picked up from Dave Sunshine. I call it AU 64.

Another recent addition to my set, a 1909 O PCGS AU 53 50C:
I purchased this in an old NGC AU 55 holder. I thought it had a 50% chance of crossing at the smae grade, but it came back in a 53 holder. It's too bad there isn't a "54" grade for situations like this; maybe someday?
Jeff - Our hosts said AU50 on the '85. Mike had it pegged.
Dr Pete - I'd suggest changing your "customize" settings, to allow most recent posts first (as Mike recently mentioned). I like it better than editing the address line each time I go to the thread.

Your 09-O has just enough wear to drop it to a 53. It's a fair grade for that coin.

I'll bump the thread along with a post of a recent acquisition for my set. I purchased the coin in a new yellow ANACS AU 58 holder; it crossed at PCGS at the same grade:
Wish I could be in Chicago for ANA, but a family wedding always takes priority over a coin show. There are some great high-end Barber halves from Greensboro collection in the auction. Many from Duckor and Friend collections.
Very attractive 95-S and a perfect 35 as well, even the other powers that be, seem to agree.
I heard from JMW, seems he and Barberkeys have been scouring the floor - looking for more toys. I also heard that an old time Barber collector ( George Harrison - not of musical fame ) brought his raw Quarter collection. Seems Vern got his eye candy to last him until FUN. I don't know if George cracked out his 1901-S PCGS 55 - or if he had a lower grade duplicate: { I know George bought my 01-S Quarter in PCGS 55 from HLRC }. George tried selling it back to me - it eventually did sell but thru Jack Beymer (on consignment ) .
The example of the 01-S that George did keep, is without a doubt the nicest AU (any grade 50, 53, 55, 58 ) I have ever seen. It's in an old PCGS holder graded AU 55. I am praying Vern has his camera with him and images this coin. I'd love to see it again.
Already starting to make plans for Tampa FUN. I'll be there Wednesday for lot viewing - meeting friends afterwards for dinner - Thursday all day on the bourse floor - that night meet up with friends for dinner - and an early departure on Friday afternoon so I can picks up the hounds by 5:30.
I am staying at the Embassy suites - and there is a bridge from the hotel directly into the convention center.
I also hope to report that I actually won a lot at the ANA auction.... it's a Quarter - and an upgrade over my AU 55. The auction is like within an hour.
Here's the only coin that I bid on. Never thought my bid would carry thru. I also didn't expect to be able to access this site from my Lap Top either !!

It was a wonderful 4 days at the ANA, spent more time with collector friends than walking the bourse, which made the show much more enjoyable. (Still covered the whole bourse, tho). Enjoyed meeting and viewing George Harrison's collection at the Barber Collector's club meeting. Unfortunately, didn't have my camera. Added four coins to my collection. No barbers, although did get a qtr I needed on ebay. More to follow.

Thanks, Jeff. The 1908-O Dime I found on Great Collections. I did some digging before I started bidding on it. It seems as though this coin was sold in a Heritage auction a few years before and closed at almost $1700. I almost fell over, and although I still think I overpaid for it, I spent less than half of what it sold for at HA.COM.
I really like the 1904 Half. Nice pick up.
Darrell: thanks for the compliments on my new 1897-O Quarter. It will be a good match to my Philadelphia one. Now, all I want to do is locate a Centered MM 1897-S in any AU grade ... ( or better, if need be ) .

ANA thoughts. This year it seemed that there were fewer dealers of US material, and more of foreign, ancient and other, to me. Still, the show is so big that there was plenty to look at. Once again, I was disappointed that there was so little decent barber material to be found in a show so large. Both Heritage and Stack's had auctions, and barber qtr pickings were pretty slim from my perspective. The 97-O in 65 Mike bought, Scott's 98-S in 64 (which brought a strong price), and a couple others were the only qts worth owning IMO. I ended up with four acquisitions for my collection, a 1795 dollar in 20 (upgraded my F15), a 1799 large cent, an 1835 dime in 50, and an 1835 qtr in 40, which has the perfect look and massive die cracks. I saw an old friend, an 01-S qtr now in a PC15 CAC'd slab (it was in a 12 when I owned it), at Harry Laibstain's table. It was priced pretty low and was soon sold. The low price seems to me to be an indication of the general dealer perception of a soft coin market.
I made a point to view the early gold from the upcoming Pogue sale, and actually held and closely examined the amazing 1795 $10 small eagle in 65+. I don't know how that coin could possibly be as frosty and original as it is. It just stood out among all the other gems and near gems.
The barber highlight of the show to me happened at the BCCS meeting, where I was able to meet George Harrison (not the Beatle), who had brought his barber qtr collection. Most were in a Dansco album in AU to MS. A few were in slabs, including the 01-S in PC55, 96-S in PC53, 13-S in PC30, 09-O in PC64, and 14-S in PC64. If I'd known he was going to be at the meeting with his collection, I would have brought my camera. As it was, Joe W, Keith M and I sat with him for probably 30 minutes after the meeting, looking at his coins and hearing his thoughts.

Vern - very nice 1900 Quarter. Thick original skin - from what I can tell by the images. I used to have a slight "passion" ( read: addiction ) for reduced size Bust Quarters. That's a nice coin.
Okay, did Doug sell that 98-S Quarter thru Heritage, or just recently purchase it ? Another nice coin, congratulations, either way, Doug.

Thought I'd jump in with maybe a stupid question but is there any way to find out exactly when a particular coin was graded, I know you can get the slab info from the cert check, but I would like to know how long some of my coins were in the slab as graded.

Unless you were the original submitter, or know the original submitter, and can look up the invoice in your account or files, there is no way. Going off of the generation of slabs can narrow it down, though it narrows it only a little, especially with the more recent generations, and it also can be skewed by reholders.
oih8 - Actually, both dies are cracked on my newp bust qtr. That just added to the appeal to me.
Mike - Thanks on the qtrs. 1900 has some obv marks, but I can live with them for the overall look. Also, the 98-S qtr in 64 was Scott's, and it did sell in the Heritage ANA auction.
Dave - Good seeing you at the ANA. Find anything? And I think it'd be great to know when a coin was slabbed. Are you listening PCGS?

The 1898-O date in Quarters is among my favorites and has been for years. The one I had in my last set was one of the "jewels in the crown" as it was out of Dale Friend's collection - and I sent it in for Pedigree Designation: Hayes-Friend. It graded MS 65.
Here is one of my current favorites: [ EX: Tom Bush ] Its an MS 62
And when Dale heard I was selling my sets in 2011, he requested that coin back - and he paid me what I had paid him. He later confessed it was one of his all time favorites as well.
While assembling my most current set, I have had a bunch of 1898-S Quarters. A good friend - Glenn - was happy to take my lesser graded 98-S's - and he still has two beautiful AU's : 53 & 55. Check out his new site.

Finding this coin in AU is darn near impossible !
Although I have a great looking 1905-P in PCGS 58 - CAC - I loved this coin when Liz Coggan showed it to me. I cracked it out and it returned as an AU 58. It is now at CAC.
This NGC 60 [ CAC ] looked nicer than the grade listed - I cracked it out - submitted it raw - and its now a MS 62 At PCGS

Adding insult to injury - I downloaded every Barber Half that I had imaged.
Took some time - and every second I thought the whole thing would fall apart.

One of the coins - an 1897-P in XF 40 had a cryptic bad word in it. F"X"G. So, nothing came up. That was the better part of an hour thrown out the window.

I made a point to view the early gold from the upcoming Pogue sale, and actually held and closely examined the amazing 1795 $10 small eagle in 65+. I don't know how that coin could possibly be as frosty and original as it is. It just stood out among all the other gems and near gems.
The barber highlight of the show to me happened at the BCCS meeting, where I was able to meet George Harrison (not the Beatle), who had brought his barber qtr collection. Most were in a Dansco album in AU to MS. A few were in slabs, including the 01-S in PC55, 96-S in PC53, 13-S in PC30, 09-O in PC64, and 14-S in PC64. If I'd known he was going to be at the meeting with his collection, I would have brought my camera. As it was, Joe W, Keith M and I sat with him for probably 30 minutes after the meeting, looking at his coins and hearing his thoughts.

That Bust Quarter would be a welcome addition to just about any collection...if it wasn't for that defective planchet, it looks like it was cracked all the way through!

a nice coin.
Okay, did Doug sell that 98-S Quarter thru Heritage, or just recently purchase it ? Another

It seem as if the PCGS web site was only toying with me, I have not been able to access

Unless you were the original submitter, or know the original submitter, and can look up the invoice in your account or files, there is no way. Going off of the generation of slabs can narrow it down, though it narrows it only a little, especially with the more recent generations, and it also can be skewed by reholders.
Mike - Thanks on the qtrs. 1900 has some obv marks, but I can live with them for the overall look. Also, the 98-S qtr in 64 was Scott's, and it did sell in the Heritage ANA auction.
Dave - Good seeing you at the ANA. Find anything? And I think it'd be great to know when a coin was slabbed. Are you listening PCGS?

The 1898-O date in Quarters is among my favorites
and has been for years. The one I had in my last set
was one of the "jewels in the crown" as it was out of
Dale Friend's collection - and I sent it in for Pedigree
Designation: Hayes-Friend. It graded MS 65.
Here is one of my current favorites: [ EX: Tom Bush ] Its an MS 62
And when Dale heard I was selling my sets in 2011,
he requested that coin back - and he paid me what I
had paid him. He later confessed it was one of his all
time favorites as well.
While assembling my most current set, I have had a
bunch of 1898-S Quarters. A good friend - Glenn - was
happy to take my lesser graded 98-S's - and he still has
two beautiful AU's : 53 & 55. Check out his new site.

I cracked this out of an NGC 58 holder - submitted it raw - and received this back as an AU 58
One of the nicer 95-S's in AU that I have seen...
Finding this coin in AU is darn near impossible !
Although I have a great looking 1905-P in PCGS 58 - CAC - I loved this coin when Liz Coggan showed it to me. I cracked it out and it returned as an AU 58. It is now at CAC.
This NGC 60 [ CAC ] looked nicer than the grade listed - I cracked it out - submitted it raw - and its now a MS 62 At PCGS

Adding insult to injury - I downloaded every Barber Half that I had imaged.
Took some time - and every second I thought the whole thing would fall apart.

One of the coins - an 1897-P in XF 40 had a cryptic bad word in it. F"X"G.
So, nothing came up. That was the better part of an hour thrown out the window.
