Jeff, love your raw 99-O. Like the 92-O too, but don't think its a tough coin.

Mike, the 07-O was purchased as is off eBay, estatesales (DK) and it was a great deal!

Ok, I know Darrell posted after you, and so did PAESAN.
So, I'm just bumping this along. I have one question, Jeff.

The 1908 you just posted is speckled with carbon like spots.
Why in God's green Earth would you chance buying this and
hope to get it certified... and if it did get into a numbered slab,
eventually, you'll be selling it. Who do you think is going to be
chomping at the bit to buy that coin ? No offense, but I see no
rhyme or reason for a purchase like that. JMHO.

    The price was right?

I plan on selling it to someone at the "Carbon Spotted Coin Collectors" thread?

At least it's not dipped. Someone will love the coin with freckles.

Hello Barberians, I have enjoyed following the thread even though I only occasionally buy a Barber or two. But, I could not resist buying this album. It is an old Wayte Raymond album with Barber Half Dollar boards. Unfortunately, it only has 5 boards that cover 1898-s - 1915 (Boards C-H of the Barber Half series). Still, it is neat to think that it may one day be full again.

Jeff - Nice bunch of halves you've posted, except for the 98-O of course. Definitely a fake. And I don't mind the '08, I like a little haze and stuff.

Mr Breeze - Thanks for posting the Raymond boards. Hope you decide to fill them up.

Nice collection and love the old album. I spotted the
"01-S" in the slot and thought you owned a nicer one,
now I see you do, actually. What did our hosts grade
the real 01-S, my wag is VF 35 and a green bean too.

My Mercury Dime collection is still raw and the 16-"D"
    in AU 55 is actually a "S" .... I don't own a 16-D, I refuse
to spend the money on one (of the most over rated dates
in all of Numismatics !! ). And, if I did succumb to buying
one, I would not crack it out either.

Jeff, it sounds like you may have to pay for the coin and receive it and then file SNAD report for a counterfeit.

Mr. Breeze, that album would be astonishing with a run of VF35 coins like you had before! That was a stellar set.

Mike - I agree with you on the 16-D dime, right up there with the SVDB for always available, priced too high coins.

Jeff - And I remember when ebay was an enjoyable venue, both buying and selling. Also, our hosts say 35 on my 01-S.

Jeff, Here's another idea. Inform seller that your PayPal has been hacked into by the Chicoms and you'll need his address to mail a payment. Then go to remote closet in your home and take out your Monopoly game. Extract one crisp, light gold C-note. (You can add a fin as a tip for excellent communication) Send payment along with a note saying that once coin is received and authenticated you'll send another payment.

Don't sweat it and have fun!

Nice photo line up. I note the dentils under both 1&1 are shorter and smaller in kind on each example. Seems a match.
I'm going with "score!" Vote for the time being.
Now I'll click the link and see the story. : )

And by the way, I NEVER tire of Vern's quarter set! Just fantastic.

    Thanks for the link, FadeToBlack.

I posted my thoughts ... Not a bad find, eh ?

Edit: I have no doubts that the coin is genuine.
The positioning of the One's ( 1 ) in the date match
    up.

The cast counterfeit look, as Fade mentioned, has to
be Enviornmental Damage. Yes, it's very porous.

Still a high VF detailed coin though. I have no idea
what a coin like that is worth these days. Need to check
Heritage's website. If it were gradable, I would think it
was worth the sunny side of $25,000. As is, I have no clue.

Eh, nothing jumps out at me and screams counterfeit, the porosity could easily be the result of acidic soil and that is what is making you think "cast counterfeit", in my humble opinion. The mintmark and date placement all look fine to me when compared to barberkeys' example posted about 15 posts back.

Perhaps is it is worth another look. The angles those pictures are taken at are usually used by those who deceive.

I think Vern's coin could reach those heights. This coin is
Rebounding in price since the market decline in 2009. My
AU 55 was bought at the height of the market and I was
happy to trade it towards the MS 63 - 1892-O Micro O Half. My 55
is available somewhere ( lost track of where - last heard it
was in Beymer's inventory - but he sold it. ). He was asking
    $47,500...

It was not the nicest 55 I have seen. There is one
in 55 that puts the AU 58 to shame. The owner said he'd never sell.
Well, he's older than dirt, so, it's going to sell sometime sooner
rather than later. { I have secured the financing to pay for it once
    it hits the market. }

I just downloaded images of my latest Secure Plus submissions.
Feel free to make a stab at the grades. ( I need to get off the IPad
    to do this ...)

Hi,Welcome to the forum! If yours is the coin on ebay you should end the listing and spend the money to have it authenticated by PCGS!
  • Options
Ok, I got strong armed into it. Here's my detecting find. Found it last week. No doubt in my mind about it's authenticity. It's got some environmental damage from 100+ years in the harsh Idaho soil, but it retained a ton of detail. I'm looking for private collectors or considering auctions. Either way it will be slabbed. Thanks for looking! You're suggestions/impressions are welcome!

Mike - Looked at a few of the Simpson dimes in Balt. Liked the 96-O, but didn't want to spend big bucks on a dime.
My guesses on the wonderful group you posted. Would like to see them in hand to make it less of a guess:
    Dime: 96-O 63;
    Qtrs: 99-S 64, 1908 63:
    Halves: 08-S 64, 12-D 63, 14-S 62, 1908 63, 1893 64, 02-O 63, 08-O 64, 97-O 64, 10-S 64, 99-O 63;
    Qtrs: 11-D 62, 1896 65, 96-O gen, 05-O 64.

DrTones - Welcome to the barber mega-thread. Will be real interested to hear what PCGS says about your 01-S.
