For those interested "SurfCity" finally revealed the contents of his Barber Half Everyman set on the Registry. He has all '58's except for the following '55's:
1896 S 1901 O 1901 S 1904 O 1907 S
Darrell, I think it's your turn to reveal again! Don has some photos to boot!

Interesting - I had those dates in 58 in my 1st set - with the exception of the 1901-S. I had a pair of 01-S's in 63.
Today, my sets have these grades:
1896-S - AU 50 1901-O - XF 45 1901-S - AU 53 1904-O - XF 40 1907-S - AU 50 - and a Duplicate in VF 35
Its a fun set to assemble. I have met most collectors because of this collection. Seems fewer collectors are into the other series. It was the Quarters that got me to be friends with Labelman87 ... and the Dimes were the introduction to my friend JMW.
Mike Hayes ~~~~~~~~~~~~ Coin collecting is not a hobby, it's an obsession !
The reason I had the coin imaged was because it did not look like the image I had chased for six years. Makes no difference anymore. The coin was delisted at JJ Teaparty. I went back to see their images - and the coin was gone. Congratulations.
Mike Hayes ~~~~~~~~~~~~ Coin collecting is not a hobby, it's an obsession !
Mike, That was such a hard coin to image. The colors change when you tilt it. Light flashes from a camera or lamp exaggerated the imperfections on the surfaces. I'm not surprised you tried to get better or more accurate pix. Surprised its gone already, but I'd guess the potential buyer wants to examine it on hand, so I'm not ready for a congrats yet. I just want the buyer to really love it. I'm funny that way.
Paesan - Now that the cat is out of the bag, congrats on the pending sale, without question the nicest of the three 58's, IMO. And, as you mentioned, a coin that is very hard to capture with a camera.
Mike - Scott decided to sell some of his barber qtrs, mainly the AU's, I believe.
Glad to see the details of the Surf City barber half collection. Quite a variety of looks in all those 58's. The 07-S in 55 caught my eye.
Pics for this AM, my inadequate attempt to capture Paesan's 09-O:
Vern l It's not having what you want, it's wanting what you've got.
Vern, I think you did an admirable job. Probably the best image of the three. Thanks for sharing it with us. Now, where are the other two 09-O's in 58 ?
I'd be thrilled to locate a 53-55 - if I didn't need to refinance my house.
Mike Hayes ~~~~~~~~~~~~ Coin collecting is not a hobby, it's an obsession !
Mike, As I'm sure you know, finding an AU 09-O in a pcgs holder is a daunting task. Even XFs are scarce. Here's what I know (last names intentionally omitted) John bought the last 58 off Heritage. He also owns a 40. The third 58 is at large. Doug and I own the two 55s. There are no 53s Jim has one of the 50s which I sold him. You saw this one on hand when I bought the 55. I have Walt's 45, which is a 53 on another day.
So there are only about 3-4 XF to AU unaccounted for.
I guess this is why VFs are going for 1500!
For the money, I'd personally hold out for a 63 or a 64 if I were looking for an 09-O. I've had a much tougher time locating an 05-O or a 14-S that I'd like to own over XF-40. The ones I've had an opportunity to own were pasty and I decided to pass them along. There sure are some real toughies in the set!
<< <i>What happened to the JJT 09-O? It was pulled down already... as in sold? >>
From what I am reading, it sounds like someone pulled the trigger to see it in hand. I would be curious to see it as well. A coin like that would be better viewed in hand. Maybe I will.
I do know where a very nice PC XF is that dogwood sold here.
Vern, I like your image of the 09-O the best. You've managed to capture some luster, that I've not been able to see in the other images. I've not seen the coin in hand, but I don't see it as a 58 from any photo. 55 seems more like it. Not that it matters. JMO, and it's more a comment about the image capture.
We're all born MS70. I'm about a Fine 15 right now.
Dogwood, I agree on the 55. It was awarded a 58 on eye appeal, not technical points. My (and Doug's) 55s are probably technically better. If you like color, there no better AU.
I remember when the dipped white 09-O in 58 crossed the block at a Heritage auction. Today, we wouldn't blink at a $4000 price for it, but, back then, it was extremely high.
The MS 61 that is in Paesan's collection has beautiful toning and regardless of the lower MS grade, I'd be thrilled to own it. Just checked my Lotto numbers, might have to wait another week to make him an offer he can't refuse. Ha Ha !

<< <i>We've discussed this before, but if the BCCS has a table at FUN, it would be great if some of us could set up a display of a few of our favorites ? >>
I just sent John Frost an email asking if the BCCS was getting a table ( sometimes, they join up with the Liberty Seated group ) ....
As I remember, the folks at FUN do not accommodate clubs with Gratis tables... and they require the table manned the entire show. I can volunteer for a half day, but not more than that. I plan on leaving early on Friday.
Let's see what John Frost has to say before we get our hopes up. I know there is no problem with an ANA sponsored show.
Edit:
Just heard from John Frost; as I suspected, no table is being reserved for our BCCS... They want someone there the entire time to man the table. It was worth a shot. John did mention that at the end of the BCCS meeting, there will be a "Show & Tell ". Bring your favorites to the meeting. I forgot to ask when the meeting was ....
Mike Hayes ~~~~~~~~~~~~ Coin collecting is not a hobby, it's an obsession !
After seeing all these nice 1909-O quarters, I feel like mine might have had a brief turn in a garbage disposal with the obverse face down. At the time it was a rare find and the last coin to complete the set. If my failing eyesight doesn't improve its looks, I might turn it around in the Dansco. The dealer it was purchased from later listed a VF at twice what I paid for this coin.
In the land of the blind the one-eyed man is king.
Mowgli, Your 09-O is better than I lot I've seen in holders. If it hasn't been cleaned, I'd say its a very nice coin, and unless you're willing to crack one out, I'd bet few better album coins exist.
No idea what NTT is you talking about... Sounds exclusionary.
Vern: I love the 03-O you just got from Scott. I have a decent 53, but she sure doesn't jump off the page like your Newp. Congrats.
Have a great Thanksgiving everyone. A friend is coming over to do a "few images" for me. It seems as though I am missing more than "just a few". At last count there were 58 coins without images, and I still need to work on the Quarters ... Another 20 up to 1901... Probably another 30 more from 1902 to 1916.
If I had Vern's skill, I'd way ahead of the game.
Mike Hayes ~~~~~~~~~~~~ Coin collecting is not a hobby, it's an obsession !
Mike - NTT is Name That Tune, which is to name the tune of the line Paesan puts at the end of his posts. The current one is "Just a half a mile from the railroad tracks..." And thanks on the qtr, which is an 03-S. Under-rated date IMO.
FTB - Amazing pick-up.

Edit: I LOVE the strike on the ANACS 62 and think its undergraded. PCGS says cleaned or questionable color, I forgot which. Doesn't matter much to me as it's better than 90% they've slabbed in that grade, IMVHO.

Vern,
I would love to trade in hand looks at our collections.
Considering I no longer own a 1909-O Quarter,
it seems to me that the last group of three were
once part of my collection in one form or another.
Maybe Labelman87 will join us at FUN, if he can break
away from his busy schedule. How is that schedule
these days, Craig ?
I think he's fallen in love with the Carribbean and
it'll take an act of God to get him to Orlando.
