Mike...sorry you friend's losses have not been found. I have an interesting somewhat related experience.
I am very meticulous about keeping records of the graded coins I sell and keep them on a spreadsheet. My missing coins can be counted on 1 hand. I purchased the coin at a Heritage auction so I could prove I owned the coin at one time. What! I had been watching for that coin to turn up and it finally did! It was in an auction and I contacted the auctioneer and explained I don't know if I sold the coin or if it was stolen from me. I asked if they could contact the consignor and help with the history of the coin. Took a couple of contacts but I finally got an answer as to where it was purchased. It was in my own backyard at my State show this year! I was further told no more info would be asked of the consignor unless I had a police report! I am now well over 90% sure the coin was stolen from me and shocked at the reaction of the auctioneer. I bought the coin back for 75% of what I paid for it 3 years ago. If I had sold the coin I am certain I would have made $50 or more dollars on it. This is what raises my suspicion! Why would a person I sold the coin to sell it for such a loss without offering it back to me? My plan is to give it to the head of security (who is a good friend) at the next show and ask him to show it around and see if he can find the dealer who sold it(If indeed a dealer did sell it). This is about closure for me, not the money as I informed the auctioneer. But if their is that good of thief in our area I and many others would like to know! I made it clear to the auctioneer I was not after the return of the coin.
Do not even think about asking me who the auctioneer was!
Speaking of 1901-S Dimes - here is the one I sold to JMW for his collection:
PCGS AU 58
Another I had - can't seem to locate the one I have now though. I just had a lot of images done this weekend. I hope to have my Photobucket account in order by Christmas... In the meantime, enjoy :

Vern.... Your 01-S Dime in 53 is an ex: Elbesaar coin.
I need to search back in my records, but my 53 and your's seem to be the same coin. As I mentioned, I await the images that were taken over Thanksgiving. My current coin is an AU 55.

Mike - Interesting, I believe Glenn H had my 01-S dime at FUN 2010, but I didn't acquire it until April 2010, from another dealer. I wasn't at FUN 2010, but a friend told me about it and the dime pictured below. When I callled Glenn, the 01-S was already sold. Luckily, this one wasn't, PC55:

Thread stuck ... again !!
Mike Hayes ~~~~~~~~~~~~ Coin collecting is not a hobby, it's an obsession !
Four posts in a row to unstick the thread... ridiculous....
Here's another upgrade....
Ok... seems enough posts release the one I was looking for [ Vern's.]
Vern...BTW ... Very Nice 96-O .... I wish I had a nice AU in my main set.
The MS Dimes I have just posted were recent purchases from my friend, Srotag I'm assisting him in getting things organized and sell off his undergraded coins.A mutual friend bought his 1896-O Dime in its new PCGS holder - MS 64.
The 01-S in 53 you bought from Glenn was on consignment to him. I have had more than my fair share of 01-S Dimes. I just sold a MS 61 to another fellow Board Member on the BST.
If I could convince JMW to sell me back my old AU 58, I'd be a happy camper.
Mike Hayes ~~~~~~~~~~~~ Coin collecting is not a hobby, it's an obsession !
Mike - I'd say it depends on the phase of the moon as to whether either dime will cross. No, that is more predictable. I'll go back to just the luck of the draw.
Pics for this AM, under-rated date from Scott's collection, PC55:
Vern l It's not having what you want, it's wanting what you've got.
Labelman87.... Love the 02-O Quarter, even with the album slide lines on the cheek. .....Vern.... The one you posted from Scott's album is also very attractive.
Here's my old one:
Found my sellers' images of my latest one: PCGS 55
Darrell ... I think your Proof Quarter is as nice as I have ever seen.
Mike Hayes ~~~~~~~~~~~~ Coin collecting is not a hobby, it's an obsession !
I did not mean to ignore Scott's 1901-O Quarter - in 63. Very tough coin to locate, regardless of strike.
I am still looking for an acceptable AU example as I type this - I may never find another to the equal of my old one, then again, I am not looking for another MS example :
yes, Labelman87, I know where it is... buried in the hills of Georgia someplace !! LOL

Hello Everyone, been laid up again for a while with a few medical problems but glad to be back to see the great pics you have been posting. Hope to get back to work on the Barber Half set and get ready for a trip to Florida for the FUN show.
In all seriousness, the coin that you posted was the worst coin to image. None of the images I saw of this coin ( including the one I had John Baumgart image for me ) do any justice to this coin.
In hand, this coin screams with Amber toning and full cartwheel luster. It imaged as though it has grease stains ( which I gaurantee it does not ). In hand there is a blush of Amber toning over the coin and I knew exactly how scarce this date is in high end AU condition.
I recently sold off another 1909-S Quarter in PCGS 53 to a gentleman who lurks on these forums and buys on our BST. I am sure he loves the coin as much as I did when I first located it. I also had a choice XF 45 that I picked up from JT for a friend whose Son is working on a VF/XF set of Quarters. He is pleased as well. Buying this date is not easy, if found in 55-58 you'd be wise to salt a couple away. One of these days, they'll reach new heights - like her New Orleans sister.
Mike Hayes ~~~~~~~~~~~~ Coin collecting is not a hobby, it's an obsession !
Here is another 1900-S Dime that I bought because of the toning. At last count, I had bought a good half dozen AU 55-58's - and all nice ones too !
I settled on this one - Its an amazing coin - and I had new images of it taken over Thanksgiving. I am waiting for the coins to be edited - but my friend, Mike Valente sent me this Reverse of the one I am keeping.{ All the others are now sold }.
Here is Heritage's snap shot images...

They're coming lol Just finished finals this afternoon, and without the demands of studying 14 hrs a day, I should finally be able to get started on cropping and editing them.
I agree Dogwood. Many's the time I was tempted to start a raw album out of certified coins, but my friend Peter Shireman convinced me otherwise. He was proven right.
Still, it's nice seeing them in an album, good job, Mowgli !!
Thanks Vern for displaying them !

UHR - Nice 95-S.
feeter - wonderful colorful '92. Thanks for posting it here.
Mike - I imagine if those coins haven't been recovered by now, they won't be. They probably are not in those slabs anymore.
Darrell - Interesting story. I have a feeling numismatic theft is more widespread than reported.
