I'll try to compile statistics at some point in the future. I remember receiving a 7.5 on a Tanana which set me off. I do believe you might be right, the hard grader gave more .5s I'll check. If I remember there was 1 lot of minis where I received the most 9s, the other three seemed to be done by one guy who just gave me a run of 8s on everything with 7s being the default for any star or low pop. I got very few min size and I remember seeing a couple "evid of trim" - I believe I also got a 2 on one card image what was I smoking on that one?

Henry, did you check surfaces on the minis? In my experience, that is invariably the reason why an otherwise mint or gem mint card gets "net graded" to an 8 or 9 instead of a 9 or 10. Back centering is also a factor, though I certainly have seen my share of 90/10 back centered minis in a PSA 9 holder before.

I'd agree with Jim about the half grades--I seem to get a bunch or none at all, usually the latter, so I don't think most graders really utilize the half grade.

Surprised we haven't heard from BBG telling you that your grades are likely legit and you need some deep introspection into your selection ability to find the reason for the low grades. Maybe past indiscretions on your part. Nothing to see here.....no such thing as grader inconsistency........eh Jim?

<< <i>I think one big mistake submitters make is thinking that everything is predictable. Just because cards came from the same lot doesn't mean they will be consistent. Moreover, just because a submitter picked the cards doesn't mean they will be consistent either. Being tired one night, or perhaps having the light at a different angle, along with an infinite other variables, can cause one to simply mess-up. >>

Utterly brilliant with 100% consideration and clarity regarding the information posted above. Thank you from the bottom of my heart. Perhaps having the light at a different angle is the excuse one uses to sell a complete repackaging set including 36 pieces of gum on ebay and selling it on Canadian ebay to hide from the US.

    EDIT:
    Lot 1: 190 cards and a total of 10 PSA 7s = 5%
    Lot 2: 123 cards and a total of 32 PSA 7s = 27%
HOW? Shouldn't there be SOME level of consistency?
Again these came from 5 pristine sets I bought from REA and I believe a couple more NM/MT sets picked up around 2006-2008. The sets from REA were indeed pristine with 35 year old tape etc.
I know that Joe will read this and hope that he goes over all my submissions because he can tell who is who. I will contact him directly once I cool off.

Sorry to hear about the inconsistent results. Hang in there. I think you got some great advice and comments from many (bbg excluded of course). Maybe after things settle down cracking and
resubmitting some of the better cards is a good idea Henry.

Henry I think your results are why so few people on this site submit large numbers of cards. The variance in grading with PSA can be astounding and infuriating. As frustrating as it is your best bet is to crack and re-sub. I would also post some detailed scans of those that seem most egregiously misgraded and see what people think. I have found that high resolution scans and the nitpicking that comes with them tend to show flaws that I might have otherwise overlooked or de-emphasized.
Best of luck, personally I have not found PSA to be very responsive to entire sub complaints. I have contacted Joe about specific cards within a sub and gotten reviews and grade changes but never gotten any traction when I felt the entire sub was improperly graded.

For what it's worth: that sub is why it is helpful for us collectors to always remember how highly subjective the grading game is-- and to be wary of letting the graders create too much value just by the number they affix to the label. The more I collect over the years, the more I find myself utterly ignoring the grader's grade and evaluating the card with my own eyes, deciding what I think of it independent of the grade some other human being gave it, and then bidding based on sheer eye appeal. Guess what I'm saying is that I'd bet there are some amazing 8s in Henry's sub that should be appreciated for the great cards they are-- and then we sometimes find ourselves thinking less of a card because of the grade it got.

True story: a guy I know has an insane collection. He was big into registry sets. He would often buy a 9 for his set GPA, but then he would keep a better-looking 8 that he liked more. I mean, what does that say about the grading game? I've seen many a centered 3 or 4 that I would take in a heartbeat over certain 5s or 6s or even 7s. That to me says so much about the grading game.

I remember my freshman year at college, I wrote a paper I was so proud of. It got a C+. I had the random luck of having to read that same book upon which the paper was based for another class. I knew it was a no-no but I handed in the very same paper to the other prof. He gave it an A. From that moment on I never sweated grades in life.

But back to cards, I really have found that once we free ourselves and our minds from focusing on the label and instead make it all about the card itself, that card-centric mindset leads to great happiness in collecting. End of day, I love to say, "Who cares what some grader thinks? This card looks great to me and I love it!" I'd bet the farm that some of those 8s could easily be 9s on another day. And if put up with great scans for auction there are discerning collectors out there who will set snipes almost commensurate with 9 prices for an 8 that deserves to be a 9. Same for any card that is undergraded. As a collector I think its key to not let those graders have so much power over our happiness, lol image

    +1

I would second Robb's suggestion to post several cards that you feel were undergraded when you get the cards back. As Matty said, grading is definitely subjective even with the grading standards in place, and it's also possible that the first grader was more liberal with their grades which of course makes the second grader seem even tougher by comparison. We've all gotten subs back with cards we felt were undergraded, as well as cards we thought were generously graded, and if it were possible to simultaneously submit the same sub to two separate graders, the results would certainly confirm that. As Robb also suggested, I would recommend cracking out a few of the cards you feel were most seriously undergraded and resubmit them to see what upgrades you realize (if any). And as a rookie submitter, you will definitely gain valuable experience during that process, too. As a PSA collector, though, I would not be in favor of Joe reviewing or second-guessing the sub with an eye towards bumping some grades, as that kind of request seems closer to asking a special favor, imo, which is not what you want to see in the PSA grading process.

Hehe, yah Tim it is possible that my cards were given gifts by a grader rather than punished by the grader of death. image The cards are at my home, but as usual I probably wont be back to the US for several months. I'll get scans up when I do get back...in the meantime, I am not even going to have my cousin open the boxes. I'll just let them sit and mature like fine wine.

Henry - I believe those were the sy berger sets. I spent hours looking at them in person and honestly saw far more 8s than anything, so I didnt chase you too far. Pack fresh, but a lot of print issues and very light corners iirc. I remember the aarons having issues from the way they were packed as well. old newspaper jammed at the end i think?

I was really impressed by both. We all know the Winfield to be a sleeper, but it is about time a real psa 9 Schmidt carried a value in line with the card and player... and yes, I am verrrry happy to have grabbed my Winfield recently...

Those were from my private stash that I sold for the Ruth RC. The guy I sold them to put them up. Glad they both did well. I know the Winfield found a good permanent home.

Posted on the 1970s mega forum but for my mini brothers here is the poppage on my mega 1976 submission: 919 cards = 62 psa 10s for a .067 hit rate. Pretty high percentage of 9s (I guess around 75%). I feel pretty good about this since the overall hit rate for the 1976 population is .05. I am not sure if I hit some low pop 10s but I know that many of them were the usual team cards. I didn't hit any stars but few were worthy. My best hit was a 9 on a Stennett RB (which has been impossible to find). As usual the white whales in this set remain elusive. NO way near a 9 in Miller, Briggs, Torre or Oliva (I hardly submitted any either). I really want to get home and crack about 100 9s and resubmit them!

Just one bid increment and it would have been yours, Henry!

With prices like that, I think I may have to sell the few pop 2 10s I still have. image

I just started dabbling in mini's and I was watching some of the PSA 10's go off for fun. ebay user bradybunch_99 won several of them. Is he a board member?

Anyway... that was fun to follow and watch!

Edit: MMD: I didn't see you asking who r***b (531) too. I saw you picked up at least one. Congratulations!

not so fun for me snuff image I got destroyed lol- those were some serious bids. I did win the Etch psa 9 for under 300.00 which was probably 1/2 what I thought it would go for (fisheye and all).

I'm just glad I won the Stottlemeyer, geez, LOL...

I did however manage to pick up a PSA 9 Christenson #551 for a good price the other day, $115.

Edit to add: Thanks for the plug, Tony!

Well, another year, another member freebie sub with six reviews and another year my Brett stays in a PSA 9 holder. For a change though, I did not go ofersix, but hit on a card I pulled from a pack myself and knew was better than a 9. This was actually the second review of it, so you have to stick to your guns. Tough card too:

Had half of a large order pop today, very happy overall, but very hit or miss. Hit a 1973 10, 9 of 15 psa 10s on 1975 hostess hand cuts, 5 76 psa 10s (3 76 Oliva PSA 9s.... all pd, sorry for the tease Henry). I hit a nice 1 of 1 71 basketball PSA 10 as well. I sent in a small amount of minis as well, but nothing new. All were previous n6s (3 of the previous n6s turned into eots, so that cost me a few bucks) or crack-outs, so I am much happier with the results than you would think (I soooo wanted a 9 on the palmer, but it bumped from an 8 to an 8.5)... 9 cards graded, 3 of them 9s and some tough 8s as well.

ROFL image Jim I nearly crapped my pants! - thank god for the quick "sorry for the tease!"
That Tigers psa 9 mini is a great hit - almost all of those I have seen are shorties..it is probably now more difficult than the cubs team card in a full 9.

I have probably 100 gorgeous Olivas, all with the same print shmutz, some better, some worse. I was hoping to slip the best by as 8s... no dice. Hit some tougher 76s tho, with Montefusco and Concepcion 9s among others.

No, that's dust on the scanner. I had the same thought when I looked at the scan and was how did I miss that all these years with the card. The last time they didn't bump it, it was because of t/b centering on back, which was a sad joke.

If that were Ken Brett, it would likely be in a 10 holder, but I do believe PSA is very conservative when it comes to bumping a card of that magnitude.

That said, I would keep trying, Jim. Nice work on the Campy bump from 9 to 10, though!

That's a case scratch there between the e and b. The back is dead on l/r and 70/30 t/b on back, actually much better than any other brett 10 I have seen which are generally atrocious.

Tim nailed it. The card is nicer than the campy and if it were ken brett, it would have been in a 10 long ago. It is what it is, but I will keep trying every once in a while. Tempted to try and cross it into an sgc 98, then recross...

If the grader put a sticky tag at the bottom left corner, there could be a slight bend or notch at the corner that can only be seen at an angle view? Otherwise, the card looks great! A bit more risky doing multiple resubs with the same card. Sooner or later an accident could make your top of the line 9 an 8 or worse?

Honestly, I don't and wont lose sleep over it. It is one of my favorite cards I own, pulled by me on my case break, so it will always be worth more to me than anyone else. For my own vanity, I would love to eventually see it in a 10 holder, but then that might be the worst thing that could happen as I would inevitably start to think about whether I could afford such an expensive card in my collection...

We all have some amazing cards in our sets, this happens to be the rare case of having pack pulled and graded such a key card at that level. It's one thing to have a sub where you hit a bunch of low pop 9s and probably more financially rewarding, but from a personal standpoint, this and the PSA 10 Seaver I pulled and graded are more special than the rest.

I've been working on a project the past month or so, just catching up on the news. Yah BBCE has made quite the splash. Jim do you know the source of the couple of cases that BBCE got their hands on? You still have two correct? I was looking at the number of active sets which is at 70. As I worked down the list I stumbled on 'the hill collection" which is about 18% complete and has a average grade of 9.38! Now I know where all the cards I lost out on have gone image Anyone know who this is?

Yes, I saw that. I'm not sure what it means though for Mini cards individually. Unopened Mini wax packs have more than doubled in price over the last 1 or 2 years, but the prices on individual high grade cards have been largely flat with the exception being Brett and Ryan in an 8 or higher. I've noticed that those two in particular have surged upward 30 percent more in the last year.

Another interesting observation is that over the last year, it's getting harder and harder for me to find high grade raw mini's at local and regional card shows. Since last fall, I've found two low pop cards that I've received an 8 on. I pulled an 8 on a Blyleven and an 8 on a Chuck Taylor a couple of weeks ago. That's it. I've found a few high pop raw commons that I think would grade 8 or higher, but even these are getting harder to come by. So, what I have been doing is buying every high grade raw Mini I find at a show, regardless of its population. Most are not worth grading at this time, but I'm banking on their future value/rarity. I'm also buying all full sized green/yellows and red/yellows that I think will grade out at a 7 that I previously passed on - even these are getting hard to find at this grade level and full-sized at shows compared to the previous 5 or so years. I think even in 7, these will have decent value going forward, and I would even go so far as to say that for these color combos, 7 is the new 8.

MM - I noticed the Hill Collection earlier this past week. I have no idea who it is, but it will be fun to watch this set grow, and I hope it makes it to 100 percent. We've seen a couple of these high grade sets fizzle out at about 30-50 percent completion. It will be a challenge for them, no doubt. You have to have the passion for these cards to have the staying power to make it that far at that high a grade. And, it's only going to get tougher.
