Successfully cracked out three cards this afternoon to crossover to PSA...

1971 Thurman Munson SGC-96...very nerve wracking cracking this one out. I felt like I was doing surgery.
1967 Pete Rose SGC-96
1963 Roger Maris BVG -9. Subgrades: centering 9...corners 9...edges 8.5...surface 9.

Did you try crossing them in their former holders first?

Monte - you should have made a YouTube video of yourself doing it with some tense music and someone wiping your brow! Seems like when you crack a 1988 Topps there are no issues, but as soon as you do a major card something sticks together, falls on the floor, dog runs in...

I have cracked my fair share of cards out, those that attended last years National can attest, but cracking out that Munson is beyond risky. Good luck!

I just cracked my first SGC yesterday. OMG what a joke. I used a tiny screw driver and it took all of about 30 secs. At least the Munson was in one of those holders. Good luck with the sub!

Thanks for all the comments and good lucks w/sub...guys! I am a gambler by nature...frequented casinos often before getting married 5 years ago.

I did not submit for review in holders...so it is first time attempt at a crossover. I have had the Maris and Rose for nearly 10 years...actually already have a 67 Rose in a PSA-9....so this one will be sold. The Munson was purchased in REA auction Fall 2014...if you want a look. My scanner is poor quality.

That's a nice upside if you hit a PSA 9. Break even if you get an 8.5.

Any guesses on what a 10 would fetch?

    mintonlyplsmintonlypls Posts: 1,740 ✭✭✭✭✭

I never submit with the hope of receiving a 10. This card has never been graded a 10...and I know mine won't either. I would be happy with an 8.5.

Did you measure it before cracking it out? The main reason I ask is because I see that there is some room between the card and SGC's insert.

  • Options
    mintonlyplsmintonlypls Posts: 1,740 ✭✭✭✭✭

The card measures correctly at 2 1/2 x 3 1/2...and dead centered 50/50 side to side. The reason I cracked the Munson...I don't like the look of 71s in the black outline of the SGC slab.

I had always planned to crack it out...and since I was cracking a couple others decided it was time to get it into a PSA holder whatever the grade...hopefully at least an 8.5.

I was always concerned chipping the black border when cracking it out so procrastinated...and fortunately it was a successful extraction. As stated in the REA auction...edges and corners are chip free...amazingly.

First, an absolute stunner. Love this card. Own an 8, but would love a 9.

I see this card has been bought and sold a few times since '08. I would guess the others sent this to PSA for a review; no? Are you a little nervous that the previous buyers didn't crack it out?

IMO, PSA is notoriously inconsistent on '71's. But I think that could be in your favor.

I was not aware that it had been sold several times...but many cards are bought and sold a number of tines...so I am not concerned there. Still...I would lying if I did not admit I am nervous. Who knows...it could come back an 8...but I would be disappointed if it does not come back at least an 8.5. It is a gorgeous card in hand. I have measured it...so I am not worried it would come back Minimum size requirement.

There is always the risk of damaging a card when cracking it out. Even the slightest bump on a '71could result in a chip easily visible w/black borders...so that is a deterrent of cracking out any '71. If it has never been cracked out...I could not understand not wanting to take the risk with such a condition sensitive card. As stated...I am a risk taker. No risk...no reward.

I'd be surprised if that card doesn't come back 8.5 or better. I also doubt anyone cracked it out though it may have been reviewed. I think you have a better upside of cracking it out vs submitting a card in another company's holder.

I've followed this card closely for several years. It is amazingly difficult to get anywhere near PSA 8, and yours looks great. I collect '71's in high grade, but have gotten very picky over the last few years. It is the one year that I see the most variance in the grades.

At least you understand the risks and admit to them, others not so much. The best of luck and please let us know how it turns out.

Sdub I am not certain what you mean by others don't understand the risk. Most don't have the guts to try this understandably so. The OP said he is a gambler. If the card comes back an 8 at the present time it loses half its value. If it comes back a 9 it increases by at least five times its value. This has a 1:8 risk reward ratio. A very well placed bet. Not to mention if it comes back in a lower grade it can be re submitted and he can try again or send it back to SGC and see what they say.

Is it really 5x value between a PSA9 and an SGC 96? Is that a general rule or specific to this card?

The OP said he spent $4,200. I used the 2015 sale that is in the SMR at $21,510. There was a copy auctioned off last year by PWCC that I believe went for right at 30k. I don't think there is a general rule but the spread between the two companies has gotten quite large in the past few years on numerous cards and especially one like this.

Ahhhh.....Thurmon Munson. I remember the day he took that Cessna Citation SP for a ride. Too much ship for an inexperienced low hours not flying much guy. I believe the widow sued Flight Safety for lack of training and Cessna selling him the plane....if I recall. I had many of his cards until I gave my collection to my cousin. Which he still has...along with about 30 Mickey Mantles. Great player, terrible life outcome. Flying is dangerous unless your proficient, active military or an airline pilot. I gave it up because too many inexperienced pilots doing the Sunday VFR once a month. Almost got killed by them a few times. Now I just fly the 747/767/757 full motion simulators when I feel the need. Or take a 757 for a very long taxi, set the brakes with 60,000lbs of FOB and push the throttles to full power. Cures the fix. I think I still have the original Flying magazine that discusses his accident. Thanks for the memories of Thurman, great player cut short in life.

The reason I used the 2015 number was many cards that set records in 2016 have backed off those levels. This is a Pop 4 in a PSA 9 so perhaps the 30k is the accurate value but when evaluating potential profit I think most should use conservative numbers. I am no expert on 1971 Topps values but it would seem doubtful that you could put a PSA 9 up in a straight BIN at just over 30k and have someone grab it. Either way a total home run if the OP scores a 9.

On a side note. I have always pondered if the graders read the message boards to stay current with the hobby and read threads like this and are aware of a card like this coming in to be graded. Its not like they review top level 1971 Topps Thurman Munson's everyday. Obviously we will never know the answer but it honestly wouldn't surprise me.
