I believe "the call" as I will hence forth remember it should be relegated to the huge treasure chest that contains memorable plays/games/Coaches/players from this storied rivalry. if we each keep re-hashing it and arguing the rightness or wrongness of it we will probably hang on to some petty resentment towards another member that will be expressed at a later time, probably about something that is non-OSU/Michigan related.
do we each really want that??
both Teams have at least one more game to play this season, which one will be determined by the events of next weekend. in a strange twist that happened very quickly Harbaugh and Meyer will be two of the leaders in games which have quieted the SEC fan base, if only for a few days, weeks or months. I am quite shocked at how suddenly College Football fortunes have changed this season and there has been at least a temporary power shift.
Alabama to date is still the premier Team in the Nation and everyone will be gunning for them. it is a nice position to be in.
Why are you showing a still frame after the runner had started to be pushed backwards? The Michigan defender touches him at his most forward point. The spot was correct. Michigan simply lost, they had plenty of opportunities to win and failed to get it done.
Perhaps I am looking with scarlet colored glasses but I see the ball held high by the helmet. It clearly gets over the white line. I do agree the refs made a mistake. They should have said confirmed, not stands.

Agreed. Much of the discussion would be different though as Michigan would still (likely) be in the playoff.
Above all else just do 5 or 10 other things better against Ohio State and you win. In the end Ohio State won. It sucks. It's Monday. Back to work we go!
Oh ya, and as for UCLA I am just glad the season is over. That was a long season as a UCLA fan. Time for college hoops... and one of the most exciting players in Westwood in a long time (Lonzo Ball).
As Brick eloquently stated Michigan dominated for 3 quarters. Give OSU credit for coming back. Michigan had plenty of chances to close the deal in spite of anything else.
OSU played tough and hung in all the way. The fact that Barnett got sacked 8 times and ran for life and was still able to lead drives with his feet said a lot about his toughness.
It was a game for the ages.
In light of the 9 stabbings on the OSU campus today sports don't seem so important right about now. Prayers

I can't help but think one of two things --- some of the students are probably shook up by the whole thing and I hope that we aren't getting to a point where other students have gotten so accustomed to this sort of thing that it doesn't bother them.
to Mark's point of the eight sacks, wherever OSU plays post-season I would hope that Meyer and the OL figure that out. with Barrett's quick feet I can't understand why he wasn't rolling to his left in some designed plays, but what do I know. looking back on that pressure, he was in the shotgun and still had only about 2-3 seconds before they were on him.

depending on the results, the selection committee will have a) a few hard choices to make or b) a few very, very difficult choices to make. the simplest outcome for them would seem to be Alabama, Clemson and Washington winning. if any of those games don't work out it gets really, really complicated. that Big 10 logjam at 5-6-7 will really be a problem.
If either Clemson or Washington slip up and Wisconsin wins, will the committee select a 2-loss Michigan or a 2-loss Wisconsin? What would they value more, the head-to-head win of Michigan over Wisconsin or the conference championship for Wisconsin? Everything I had hoped for about three weeks ago with respect to Wisconsin getting in has basically worked out. But with Michigan placed at #5 and Wisconsin at #6 today I am nervous. Again, this only comes down to a Wisconsin win and either Clemson or Washington losing. I have a feeling both Clemson and Washington will win though and the decision will be easy.
If only Wisconsin had not lost to Ohio State in Madison...damn, they had 'em.

If they are to jump Michigan I would think style points matter. So maybe a beat down of Penn State!? Having said that, I just don't see Wisconsin getting in. Washington could lose but I think the committee made a statement by putting Michigan at 5th. I think they learned from the past. I guess we will see....
I had thought Michigan would be placed between Penn State and Wisconsin to help justify the choice of the Conference Champion, but it appears they have considered and rejected that logic. the only point left unsettled seems to be this --- if things work out disastrously this weekend is there any reasonable way around two Big 10 Teams in the top four??
I feel that no matter what happens against Florida that Alabama is in, and by nature of the fact that they left Ohio State at #2, they are apparently in, also.

If U-dub or Clemson lose I think it's automatic that the Big 10 gets two teams in. Who knows what two though! Maybe if Oklahoma or OK State win 110-0 they could somehow jump the Big 10 teams but I don't really see that as a possibility.
A few things the committee got wrong. Houston and Tennessee should not be ranked. Neither should Utah. The AP and Coaches poll is correct in my opinion by ranking Iowa considered they have beaten 2 ranked teams the past 3 weeks.
IT CAN'T BE A TRUE PLAYOFF UNLESS THE BIG TEN CHAMPIONS ARE INCLUDED
Interesting how in this thread there is hardly any discussion about Colorado.
Colorado football has been irrelevant for about 12-13 years now. This year Colorado has rebounded and surprised a lot of people. It lost to Michigan in Michigan 45-28 in Week 3 and it lost to USC in LA 21-17 in Week 6. Its record is now 10-2. It could end the season 12-2.
This weekend it is possible that Clemson (#3) and Washington (#4) could lose. Either Wisconsin (#6) or Penn State (#7) will lose. That could mean 3 of the 4 teams above Colorado in the rankings could lose (though unlikely even Alabama (#1) could lose).
If 3 or 4 teams above Colorado in the rankings lose this weekend and if Colorado wins, would Colorado move up in the rankings? If so, how high in the rankings would it go?
Is there any scenario where Colorado would get one of the 4 playoff spots (I think not)?
I get the impression that even if Colorado had beaten USC and/or Michigan and had one loss or no losses, it still would be viewed unfavorably by many.
Colorado may be an anomaly this year and next year may return to mediocrity, but the great season it is having this year is probably bringing alot of joy to the sports fans of the Centennial State.
Colorado will end up where they deserve to be ranked.
the problem with all the scenario outcomes can be summed up in one word --- MICHIGAN. they have a pretty good Team and have beaten all the Teams which could realistically jump over them, how does that happen?? I believe that this season has provided the Selection Committee with something they never foresaw as possible: the SEC is sort of vanilla, the Big 10 has several Teams which are surprisingly tough, the ACC is uncertain and the PAC 12 is seen as irrelevant.
from MyLoftyPerch the way this thing all works is that the Selection Committee tries to position things so that the best Teams end up at the top while simultaneously winning their Conference Championship games. then they pick the four best Champs for the playoff, with one of the Power Five not getting in. part of the problem this season is the inter-Conference play by some of the better Teams --- two examples would be MSU/Colorado and OSU/Oklahoma. I believe that is at least part of the reason that the Big 10 is top heavy in the rankings.
I will assume that the Selection Committee does not like inter-Conference play of the better Teams, but as fans we beg for those games. that Committee wants to have full power of any ranking decision absent a difficult choice. Notre Dame almost upset the apple cart last year when they came nervously close to having a case as an independent. this weekend's games will be hugely viewed, I suppose, because of their implications.
If 3 or 4 teams above Colorado in the rankings lose this weekend and if Colorado wins, would Colorado move up in the rankings? If so, how high in the rankings would it go?

Your thoughts?
Colorado is certainly the surprise of the country.
I can't imagine them getting higher than 6th no matter who wins/loses.
I do not think there is any conceivable way short of beating Washington 200-0 that they get in to the final 4.
I agree that it is possible that Colorado may still be viewed unfavorably even had they beat one of the two you mentioned. We will never know. Our west coast bias. I think a lot still starts with pre-conceived notions. Colorado was supposed to be bad so it must be a fluke therefore they aren't as good as their record would be a mind set that is out there. Plus the Pac 12 is no good so therefore Colorado is not good... because the experts say the Pac 12 is not good. Really how many "experts" back east stay up until 1 or 2 am to watch the Saturday night west coast games? The reality is there is little difference between the main conferences and any team in the top 25 can beat any other team on any given day.
Hey Garnett, I'd love to see Michigan get in at #3. That way they could play y'all on a neutral field, if ya know what I mean.
Does OSU have a basketball game this Saturday? I bet Urbie is out milking cows this Saturday.
The reality is there is little difference between the main conferences and any team in the top 25 can beat any other team on any given day.
no, not really.
I bet Urbie is out milking cows this Saturday.
he has been spending at least some of his time filming Public Service spots that have been aired locally, so he probably hasn't spent much time in the barn.

Oh that would be fun. I sort of like the chaos for the committee so I hope one of them loses and I hope Penn State or Wisconsin win their game very convincingly. Plus, if Washington loses I hope Colorado throttles them and likewise that OK or OK state win convincingly. Then let the committee ponder all that! The Big 10 is definitely in a position to get two teams in. Should be a fun weekend.
Who wins the big game tonight? Washington or Colorado. Disappointed I will not be able to watch this game since its being played on a Friday night because I have to work.

I think Washington will win but wouldn't mind if Colorado wins just to disrupt the committee's plans. Washington's only loss is to a team that is now planning as good as anybody in the country. Nobody would want to play U$C right now. I think Washington is much better than they are getting credit for.
An interesting outcome would be if Virginia Tech, Colorado both win. Then Big Ten almost certainly gets two in with Alabama and who knows who gets the fourth? Colorado maybe or Oklahoma if they win big over the Pokes.
Of course if Florida beats Alabama, Bama still gets in but you could see an argument for Florida then.
"Look up, old boy, and see what you get." -William Bonney.
Looks like the B1G needs a Virginia Tech upset over Clemson to get two teams in. I'll be looking for that and a big style points victory from the Badgers Saturday night. It's OK to dream, right?
I suppose the Selection Committee breathed a huge sigh of relief last night since their choices got a little easier, Washington is in and Michigan is pretty much out now. assuming Alabama and Clemson victories, those fine gentleman are left with one tough decision: what to do with Ohio State and the Big 10 Champion???
I really think that if the Committee members were thinking of pushing out OSU they would have bumped them down last week. should we really expect them to drop the Buckeyes from #2 to #5, especially if the winner is Wisconsin?? my guess is that the two games we'll be watching in January are Alabama vs. Ohio State and Clemson vs. Washington. the current top four will stay the same, just in a different order giving deference to the Conference Championship games.
Just for the sake of TV money, I'm thinking they want Alabama and OSU in the finals. They don't want Bama and Clemson again if it can be avoided. If PSU loses I think its Bama vs Washington and OSU vs Clemson, that's if Clemson and Bama win today. If PSU wins, I don't have a clue.
watching the Oklahoma game and it looks like wet snow falling. where the heck are they playing the game??? the weather all around the country has been ridiculous lately. here in NE Ohio it was in the 60's on Thursday and then down into the 30's last night and today.
Sunday morning at 9:00 pacific is the announcement show. A 3 or 4 hour show. Playoffs announced in first half hour they say.
My pick:
Alabama
Ohio State
Clemson
Washington
I don't see V-tech beating Clemson and I just don't see this changing. I don't think Michigan or Big 10 winner can jump Washington. There would be an up roar out west. We would be voting on Calexit and Pac12exit!
We will see if conference championships and head to head matter. If the committee doesn't drop OSU to #5 and take Penn State then they are basically saying neither of those matter.
Washington is a conference champion and hopefully the committee will not reward OSU for missing out on the Big 10 championship game and sitting at home yesterday. There is precedence for a team in the top 3 to drop 3 places after the conference championships are played.
There will be a lot of arguments no matter what the playoff committee decides.
There are strong arguments for several teams to be in. Problem is only three besides Alabama get in. Whoever is in has almost no chance against Alabama.
We will see if conference championships and head to head matter
that is a logical argument, but what needs to be added to it is that Penn State lost two games during the regular season. one of those was to #25 Pitt and the other was a shellacking by #5 Michigan who then went on to lose to Ohio State. those can't be discounted just because they happened early in the season. all things considered it will be a tough choice and fans of one Team will surely be disappointed.
I thought Penn State played a really good game and everything seemed to hinge on that missed field goal and the fact that Wisconsin was too one-dimensional on offense and was flagged too many times on defense. though McSorley put up some nice numbers and threw a few beautiful passes he also had some mistakes that always seemed to work out nicely. if he over-threw, Wisconsin held or was called for interference. if he under-threw, his receivers made nice catches. in his defense, he had 3-4 passes that were a delight to watch.
I forget who the announcer was that made the call, but he talked about Penn State and what they had done in the second half of games during the regular season, I think they showed a graphic of the point differential. then the Lions came out from the break and did exactly what he had said, smoked Wisconsin.
in the end I see Penn State as a well deserved Big 10 Champion but don't see them leap-frogging into the playoff. with all that said, if it happens I won't be surprised, just bummed out.
It's an unsolvable problem with circular arguments.
If it goes down the way I think it will, a few new trends will be set.
I want to make a case for the Rose Bowl being as desirable as a playoff game but I'm not articulate enough this morning to do so.
Being in the mix for a national championship is of course the goal but I think the Rose Bowl is still the best bowl game out there.
"If I say something in the woods and my wife isn't there to hear it.....am I still wrong?"
Alabama and Clemson are locks. I think OSU is a lock as well, though I don't agree with it. Washington is the only one I can see moving out of the top 4 because of their schedule. When Rutgers is your marquee out of conference game of the year, you've got problems. Penn state scheduled out of conference games against conference champion Temple who just beat ranked Navy, and ranked Pitt who also beat clemson this season. The Big Ten is worlds better than the PAC 12 and the champ of the Big Ten should be in over the PAC 12 champ. My picks are Alabama, Clemson, OSU, Penn State.

I will assume that the Selection Committee does not like inter-Conference play of the better Teams, but as fans we beg for those games. that Committee wants to have full power of any ranking decision absent a difficult choice. Notre Dame almost upset the apple cart last year when they came nervously close to having a case as an independent. this weekend's games will be hugely viewed, I suppose, because of their implications.
high drama at its best!!!
I think Michigan is a very good team but they shouldn't be ranked in the top 5 imo. They have lost two late season games.
IT CAN'T BE A TRUE PLAYOFF UNLESS THE BIG TEN CHAMPIONS ARE INCLUDED
Hey Garnett, I'd love to see Michigan get in at #3. That way they could play y'all on a neutral field, if ya know what I mean.
Does OSU have a basketball game this Saturday? I bet Urbie is out milking cows this Saturday.
If either Clemson or Washington should lose I would place Michigan in the top four ahead of the Big Champion whether it be Penn State or Wisconsin.

no, not really.

he has been spending at least some of his time filming Public Service spots that have been aired locally, so he probably hasn't spent much time in the barn.
IT CAN'T BE A TRUE PLAYOFF UNLESS THE BIG TEN CHAMPIONS ARE INCLUDED

I don't know if Washington is just that good or not, but Colorado looked pretty bad tonight.

Looks like Washington is in and with some style points for good measure.

Congrats to Washington.
Looks like the B1G needs a Virginia Tech upset over Clemson to get two teams in. I'll be looking for that and a big style points victory from the Badgers Saturday night. It's OK to dream, right?
Congratulations to Washington!!!
When do they announce the Final Four, Sunday?
Just for the sake of TV money, I'm thinking they want Alabama and OSU in the finals. They don't want Bama and Clemson again if it can be avoided. If PSU loses I think its Bama vs Washington and OSU vs Clemson, that's if Clemson and Bama win today. If PSU wins, I don't have a clue.
Go Wisconsin.
I think they announce around 3PM.
watching the Oklahoma game and it looks like wet snow falling. where the heck are they playing the game??? the weather all around the country has been ridiculous lately. here in NE Ohio it was in the 60's on Thursday and then down into the 30's last night and today.
crazy!!
If voting for the 4 best teams, It should be
Bama, Ohio State, Clemson, and winner of the Big ten Championship game. Washington has a weak SOS and they have a late season loss.
IT CAN'T BE A TRUE PLAYOFF UNLESS THE BIG TEN CHAMPIONS ARE INCLUDED
Congrats to Penn State
Best game of the day.
To be down by 21 in the first half and then out score the Badgers 31-3?
Come'on man!
Nice work.

Whoever is in has almost no chance against Alabama.

that is a logical argument, but what needs to be added to it is that Penn State lost two games during the regular season. one of those was to #25 Pitt and the other was a shellacking by #5 Michigan who then went on to lose to Ohio State. those can't be discounted just because they happened early in the season. all things considered it will be a tough choice and fans of one Team will surely be disappointed.
C'mon y'all, lets see some predictions, got about 2 hours left.
My prediction.
1. Alabama
2. OSU
3. Clemson
4. Washington
Florida ran for 0 yards on 30 attempts.
.
