These ANA labels and other show releases may get old very soon. I could understand if the mint did a true first struck release of these coins and labeled them so like one of 500 like the BEP, but the label proves nothing other than it was sold at the show.
I'm on vacation the week the Gold coins are released. I had planned to go to Colts Training Camp (weather permitting) on Tuesday and changed it to Monday so I could be home when the coins were released at noon. Now that they are mint to demand.... I think I'll go to Colts Training Camp on Tuesday after all.... and just buy the coin when I get home.

Facebook a major intrusion into personal privacy ,,whether personal, professional, legal your posts on fb, tw inviting to use as future evidence in some way.. not to say facebook experiments on users themselves
These days you can't leave your house and run an errand without multiple intrusions on privacy. For the most part I've thrown my hands up in the air and waived the white flag. I used to resist but it's the way of the world now, so almost pointless. Not to say I don't reject any opt in intrusions but many can't reasonably be controlled. As for social media I participate on a limited basis personally and more actively with business. If you ignore it in business you're making a huge mistake. In a sense this forum is a primitive form of current social media models, allowing public interaction with others. The USM does what the USM does. I no longer question the logic. Sometimes it makes sense to me, sometimes it doesn't. I think there is an identity crisis of sorts in objectives there and no entity can be all things to all people.

I agree that FB and Twitter as well as other social site are the way of the world and can't be ignored. It would be a foolish business decision not to use them.
My original objection was to the mint making its news release through FB first. For anyone to notice it they would have to a FB member and then following the mint.

<< <i>still no price for the Kennedy gold.. little over 3 weeks before launch Aug. 5 >>
That's because the price is based on Wednesday's London gold fix. We'll know the price on July 30. The coins go on sale on Aug 5, and technically the price could go up or down the day after release. If there's a sharp drop in gold prices after July 30, the coin could go down $50 in price. Do you buy it first day? Or wait until Noon, July 6 to see if the mint drops the price?
If you base the price on what proof Eagles go for at today's spot, we're looking at a minimum price of $1250. Since the packaging will cost more (the Kennedy is coming in a "hardwood box"), it could be slightly higher. I'm still guessing between $1250 and $1300 at today's gold price. If gold rallies another $12 by Wednesday and stays above $1350, (and it's been steadily increasing since the start of June), prices will be higher by $50.
I find it interesting that the coin isn't listed in the catalog yet. It'll probably be listed when part 4 of the Kennedy promotion gets published.
If the line is ridiculous, most certainly the USM will limit purchases to each person.
It will start at 5 an work its way down. I can see it being 1 per person.
The USM could make this a more orderly process for show purchases. I stated this before.
**Why not pre-register to buy at the show? Get a confirmation number and a time to show up at the USM counter that is pre-assigned. You don't show up, no second chance.
**How about a ticket - time assigned to buy at the show? Kind of the deli counter concept. Random assigned numbers. Call numbers in order / display number above booth. Step up to buy. Miss you number - miss your chance.
This isn't hard and would alleviate most of the issues.
I had no idea that some dealers were busing people in to stand in line but while at Summer FUN, a dealer I know was commenting to a friend of mine that a number of dealers are doing this and paying $250 per person and food expenses and free round trip bus transportation to Rosemont.
The money these dealers will make on the average collector is insane, IMHO. They will be given to both the big TPG houses and the "70's" will be going for Moon Money. I hope to have enough to get in on the deal ( thru my friend who is buying a large share of this venture, he said he'd sell me one at his cost. )
I plan on buying one directly thru the Mint - along with the silver options, and the Regular Issue. I think a custom Capitol Plastic holder is in order to house these issues and I'll incorporate the 1964 issues as well. MS P&D and the two Proof Varieties.
Mike Hayes ~~~~~~~~~~~~ Coin collecting is not a hobby, it's an obsession !
FWIW: The Mint utilizing social media, in my mind, is a great step into the much needed "modernizing" we've griped about. And I join the folks that say ignoring FB, Twitter and others is a very big marketing mistake. I'm actually encouraged to see the Mint "jumping in" to the social waters...even if they are a bit behind the typical NPD release curve (we're into the "late majority" phase, IMO).
I am wondering if there will be any better performance in shipments from online sales because they are releasing (and handing real coins to purchasers) @ the ANA? Maybe the Mint is finally going to meet their 1 to 2 week shipment allowance this time...
I have a great idea to spark more interest in these coins. For every Mint run, place a different edition on the coin. If they do a 25,000 first run, the coin would say "First Edition". Then "Second Edition", etc… like they do on books. This way, they could mint to demand, and create such flipping feeding frenzy that we could stay occupied on these Boards for many months. Imagine a coin holder that said "First Strike, First Edition", "First Strike, Second Edition", etc… Heck, the TPGs could even get into the game with "Second Strike" and "Third Strike" labels--and, of course, a "Strike Out" label for those who didn't get their coins in on time. Serious collectors would have to collect them all. Really, I think we're on a new threshold of collecting here...
Paying busloads of people to stand in line. Huge premiums for silly labels like first strike and all the others to be fabricated for this. This is not coin collecting...this is market manipulation and as usual it is the collector that will lose in the long run. I intend to get my coins off the website, wait 12 weeks if I have too, keep them in mint packaging. In twenty years all this label crap will be meaningless. Who will care if the label is gold, has some special text, symbol, or is signed by some nobody. Collectors...take heed, this is all just market manipulation. Time will eventually heal the insanity and coin will once again be what matters. The true sage advice remains buy the coin, not the holder. I know that everyone should collect what they want and I encourage everyone to do so. Collecting should be fun. But when dealers are sending bus loads of people in order to be able to put special labels on a piece of plastic then this has gone to far.

derryb - That "used" to be the US Mints goal with the collectible issues but given the fact that the very act of selling these new releases over the counter at a Coin Show proves that this is not the case. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out that the OTC Limit of 5 per person is being abused by deep pocketed coin dealers and flippers yet...........they continue to snub their noses at the folks that have been ordering online since the inception of online ordering!
To me, this is not pandering to "collectors". This is providing "opportunity" for dealer abuse whule collectors will have to wait 3 or 4 months before they see their coins.
And lets be straight about the "flipper conotations". I flip to pay for my collecting interests, not to retire. I'd buy 5 and sell 4 to hopefully pay for the 1 I keep but I simply cannot afford to buy 100 much less pay folks to stand in line for me.
Do I Flip? Sure! But I'm not "using" the system on an abuse level.

You took the words out of my mouth. There should be no EXPECTATION from the secondary market to be able to make an immediate profit from a mint product. It should just happen. The U.S. mint should be doing two things: 1. Make coins for circulation. They should be acceptable for commerce. There should be no griping when every one of those BILLIONS of coins won't grade MS70. That is NOT what they are for.
2. Make COLLECTOR coins to the DEMAND from the COLLECTORS. If a coin simply does not sell anf it is a low mintage, then Happy Day. >>
Item number 2 made me think of a recent June 23, 2014 Coin World article regarding the 1804 Silver Dollar. On page 30 of that issue, it states:
"The first private American collector to obtain an example was Matthew A. Stickney, who traded for his coin with the Mint in 1843, giving the Mint a gold Immune Columbia piece and other items in exchange."
Now that is servicing collectors.
I decided to change calling the bathroom the John and renamed it the Jim. I feel so much better saying I went to the Jim this morning.
Bus loads of line standers is going over the line. But then when profit is the motivator how far is too far? When does maximizing profits for a business survival or share holder return turn into just greedy? When does it become abusive?
What about someone getting family and friends to place orders at noon on the first day? Is 2 friends OK? 10 friends too much? How is this different from the bus load of pseudo buyers? It seems to be a mater of degree. Find a wallet and take $20 out of it or rob a bank...both are thieves.
Then the big question; how do you limit it? Any method I can think of can be gotten around by the determined. Then what would be the penalty if you are caught violating the limit? Hard to prove. Orders for that product by all participants in the violation canceled? Banned from ordering the next offering? Both would just encourage more devious methods of skating the rule.

Don't post a picture of yourself. Don't want people to know your political views, where you live, or who your family is? Don't post it!
Also to the people who are saying the Mint's Facebook page is only seen by the subscribers, how do you think a webpage is seen, you have to go to it, everyday. I am much more likely to subscribe to the Mints Facebook page, and see posts as they happen on my news feed then going to the US Mint's website everyday. By posting exclusive information on their Facebook page, they have sure drawn a lot of attention to it, look at this thread. Maybe that was their intention?
<< <i>I agree that secondary markets and secondary marketers should to be of no concern to the mint, but the real issue is that collectors are only seen as suckers by the marketing arm of the mint. >>
Mint is a government entity, they could care less about profits. Given the choice I'm sure they would love to get out of the collector coin business and get back to just minting circulating coinage. We collectors should be thankful they throw us some bones. >>
I cannot support this type of an attitude since I know that much of what the US Mint provides to collectors is required by public law and the direct result of Congress wanting to support the collecting community AND make a profit for the US Mint which in turn can be applied toward financing the Public Debt.
As an aside, the US Mint most certainly cares about the balance of profits vs abiding by public law. For numismatic products, they are a "profitable" business.

The gold kennedy profit potential is 1- 3x over purchase price .. that is why the ANA show will be mobbed

That was exactly the story with the HOF coins.
I got in line with my family at 10:30 - a half hour AFTER the start of the Early Bird admission and we were first in line. Not much of a line until general admission at Noon.
Being minted to demand I would think that the show slabbed 70s will bring about double the non-show slabbed ones similar to the RP Buff. In fact, the RP Buff is a more popular than these will be I think.
I can't see any way that the show slabbed Kennedys will bring the 3+ multiples that mintage limited, sold out in 12 hours $5 HOF show slabbed 70s do.
I just don't get why ANYONE would pay 3x more for a coin JUST because it was sold at a coin show....I get the 70 vs. 69 sometimes invisible thing...I kinda even get the FS vs. non FS...I get the sig thing 'cuz that could be cool....but a coin that will be available to all in a quantity sufficient to fulfill all orders place in a reasonable time frame just boggles my mind.
It's like "Oh, where did you get that great looking perfect PF70 FS Kennedy gold coin?"...."Yup, it's cool. I got it right from the Mint and sent it for grading myself......" Oh......too bad you didn't buy it at a coin show. I would have offered you 300% more"....

I plan on buying one directly thru the Mint - along with the silver options, and
the Regular Issue. I think a custom Capitol Plastic holder is in order to house
these issues and I'll incorporate the 1964 issues as well. MS P&D and the two
Proof Varieties.

This is exactly what the USM has to crack down on.....
Like I said earlier, use a better process to sell at shows.......
I am wondering if there will be any better performance in shipments from online sales because they are releasing (and handing real coins to purchasers) @ the ANA? Maybe the Mint is finally going to meet their 1 to 2 week shipment allowance this time...
Whoa...got carried away there for a moment...

I agree. Using Facebook and Twitter is kinda sucky and sophomoric! Certainly NOT how I'd consider a world class business to operate. >>
Huh? Get with the times. You should all be happy the Mint is using Facebook and Twitter as it may get younger collectors turned on to coins. PCGS uses FB and TWTR. Would you rather they put ads on denture cream and Depends boxes? >>
What?
Huh??
I'd be happy if the US Mint used this:
See that little box for "Product Notifications"?
As for Facebook and Twitter, Younger Collectors will only see the US Mint posts/tweets/twits if they've subscribed to the US Mint Facebook and Twitter feeds.

<< <i>The mint's goal is to supply collectible coins to collectors, not to flippers. Secondary markets and secondary marketers should to be of no concern to the mint. I prefer the US Mint continue catering to collectors.

derryb - That "used" to be the US Mints goal with the collectible issues but given the fact that the very act of selling these new releases over the counter at a Coin Show proves that this is not the case.

--- If it should happen I die and leave this world and you want to remember me. Please only remember my opening Sig Line.

Not sure what you think this forum is. Anyone with an account, or not can see all 2,055 of your posts. I am sure you can piece together a great deal of information about you from those. Facebook has privacy controls that are easy to set and control who can see what. Also, you, and you only control what gets posted to Facebook. Don't want a picture of yourself?

For numismatic products, they are a "profitable" business.

but while at Summer FUN, a dealer I know was commenting to a friend of mine
that a number of dealers are doing this and paying $250 per person and
food expenses and free round trip bus transportation to Rosemont.
The money these dealers will make on the average collector is insane, IMHO.
They will be given to both the big TPG houses and the "70's" will be going for

My coin club has already agreed for a couple dealers to purchase and get graded the Gold Kennedys...
Some poster above says, $250.00 over Mint price for a gold Kennedy is the going purchase price for standing in line .... this is a little cheap .. those forum members that buy at the show, should ask for more .. chances are very good you will get a lot more ..
The gold kennedy profit potential is 1- 3x over purchase price .. that is why the ANA show will be mobbed
........ flippers or what... is no one's business

1) Rev Proof Buffalo - Working less than 1 hour away - could have attended and stood on line, opted to fly home instead.
2) HOF coins - Live less than 3 hours away - thought about driving down until my own laziness took over and sat home.
3) Gold Kennedy - I will be attending and standing on line. Hoping the line is orderly. Us Jersey guys don't take kindly to anyone cutting the line - we don't fear those busloads of Midwesterners.

I would guess that the dealers and earlybirds will line up at the Mint booth right at 8am and will be quite orderly. But when the doors open to the public at 10am, I predict that it will be a mad rush from the doors to the Mint Exhibit with grown men knocking kids over just like at Walmart on Black Friday.

It's like "Oh, where did you get that great looking perfect PF70 FS Kennedy gold coin?"...."Yup, it's cool. I got it right from the Mint and sent it for grading myself......" Oh......too bad you didn't buy it at a coin show. I would have offered you 300% more"....
Really????
After early bird..... but prior to general admission at 10am.
In this case, coins will go on sale at 11am CST.
<< <i>Really???? >>
Big A - I hear you....I sympathize....I understand.
But we go with the flow......I am a seller, not a buyer of show labeled coins.....
Maybe so, BigA. But I won't.

The kennedy gold is /will be much bigger than reverse proof buff
But those that don't buy at the ANA shouldn"t worry gold set to run much higher into August

Why do you think that the K gold will be much bigger than the RP Buff?
