I did get the 1940 D over the weekend and must admit the coin looks Great in hand. I have looked at a few examples and this one clearly in hand shows the Extra D.
Plus for the first time this coin went up 100 bucks in the price guide.....woohooo.......Enjoy
The 1940-D/D is a rare coin! Congratulations on acquiring it!
Hey Rich Thanks
This one Just came back from Grading Only With a Few Others.
Wanted to thank you for the Coin again.
Anyone care to Guess the Grade without looking it up?
It came out of a Anacs MS 65. I owe Rich a Steak Dinner.
This is the DDR and will send it back for Reholder and Variety with a Few Others..
The two 1950-S WQs posted here are fabulous! I have seen UHR's coin in-hand and would buy it in a heartbeat. The coin is, in my opinion, a slam dunk MS67. That is not why I would buy it, however; I would buy it because it is gorgeous.
Nice find on the ETF. The ETF does not show up very well on your photo, but the photo of it on Coinfacts really does show the ETF really well. That is a very hard coin to find for sure, since it technically is the first to graded by PCGS. I have seen the photo in the CPG and you coin looks just like that photo.
It's been the one coin I could never find after searching for several years, the one coin that I always considered to be the "Holy Grail" of Washington Varieties. Here's a close up macro shot of the ETF's.
Great thread! After years of being a barber collector, with brief stops in seated quarters and an occasional $10 and $5 Lib, I thought, for some crazy reason, to pick up a few Gem Washington 25C to sort of relive my younger days in collecting. Coupling an appreciation for dirty skin (see Barbers) and more funds than 30 years ago, I just went on a tad of a buying and trading party.
Probably not registry stuff per se, mostly from the 40's, but in PCGS66 with some Cac and + thrown in for good measure. And a 32-D in 64, because every little set needs an anchor. Seems like a market that represents value these days, so I'm buying a few that fit my favorite look.
Please forgive the janky screen grab collage, but I wanted to say hi to the WQ crowd, so I'll just leave this here.
We're all born MS70. I'm about a Fine 15 right now.
BG, that is one heck of a lot of color for a 1935-D! As you know, they typically do not come with smooth color gradation so that must have hurt when you sold it.
Funny thing is, I never cared all that much for the Washington quarter design. I sure love all these Gems though.
I think what I like best about these coins is the thrill of the hunt and knowing that with persistence you really can find the spectacular coins. Some coins may have better designs but Washingtons strike up well enough that a few great coins get made every year.
Recently had the opportunity to have many of my coins imaged. Finally got the photos back and I wanted to share them here. The link is to my set. While lots of them still need to be imaged professionally, I tried to pick the ones most in need of quality images. I will complete the others as time and funds allow. Big thumbs up to Tom Bush and his photography skills!!! Enjoy!
The coin is in a MS 63 holder and in Hand its a 65 or a 66.
So will play the crack out game and see what happen's.
I also just got in this Variety. It's another coin I wish they would grade just the coin and NOT the variety. But from what I understand they do this on ALL 1943 Quarter's even when you do not ask...
The 6 Rattler's should be here on Saturday and picked up 7 Quarter's in a Library of Coins Album.
They said the coin's were tarnished but when I got the Album most were Beautifully Toned and the 68 S appears to be the DDO.....
It's been the one coin I could never find after searching for several years, the one coin that I always considered to be the "Holy Grail" of Washington Varieties. Here's a close up macro shot of the ETF's.
Nice, Nice, Nice !

CAC won't gold sticker it, even though they believe it to be MS-67.

I really do like the look of the old holders. I wish PCGS would allow you to pick the type of label you could slab your coins in.
The 53- D/D is a nice variety that I would not mind owning one day, of course I would want one that is not mislabeled.
Thanks for sharing the photos.

I've said before how I like this series but just can't quite grasp grading. Especially mid MS.
Yours sure looks like a luster bomb.
I'll say MS65 just to throw out a guess.

I really like the vintage look of the Rattler holders. The 39 has a nice golder hue to it. In fact they all have good color. Congrats
