That's quite discouraging and frustrating, no doubt.
Yes it is and I got my other 3 grades over the weekend. All I can say Now is NOT the time to submit Washington Quarters. In the past 6 years I have never got a MS 62 and Now in the past month I have 2 MS 62.
On the flip side if there grading this series truly tough at this time that would mean some of the coins coming out may upgrade later when times change. I picked up this 1959 because I like it and looks alot better than some of the 67's I have seen. Alot cheaper and I like the retro label.
Don't be too hard on yourself regarding the MS62 grades; around a dozen years ago I put in a rather large submission of gem WQs and I received the AU58 grade for a 1932 and a Light Motto 1934.
I'll toss one up to welcome the new forum look.
Nothing earth moving but I'm glad to add it to my set.
Hard to see in the pic but there is a nice subtle rainbow on the obv.
Hey tom did you ever send those coins back in for a regrade? Also sad to report that the 1959 I bought from Mayer Numismatics was either stolen or Lost at the Anaheim Post office. Coin was logged into anaheim oct 3 and talking to the dealer his response was this happens every once in awhile? I really wanted that coin and now looks like I will get a refund instead.............Going to leave it in my set and see if anyone tries to register it.... Enjoy tom
Here are a trio that I call my triplets. They were sent in at the same time by me, in the 1990s, and all came back the same grade with consecutive cert numbers. I'll post the obverse images now and the reverses later-
Okay, I apologize. The reason I waited as long as I did was that there were so few, if any, responses so I wasn't certain if anyone was still reading the thread. However, at least three of us are hearty souls who still love WQs. The reverses-
I call them the triplets because I purchased them from the same collection on the same evening and they are the same year and mintmark. Additionally, I sent them to PCGS on the same invoice and they all received the same grade. Lastly, they look pretty similar; the colorfully toned areas actually have a glow to them and the off-white areas have a satiny or mossy tint to them. I always thought the consistency was cool.
Oh, I can recall a ton of information about that evening; it was one of the greatest numismatic experiences of my life and I am delighted to still own quite a few coins from that transaction.

+I was reading Tom! Were they given MS67+?
Thanks!
These were graded in the 1990s well before PCGS started using the + for grading. They have never been sent back for regrade. Each was graded MS67. Interestingly enough, back in the 1990s PCGS was really hesitant to give any WQ the MS67 grade and the populations of such coins were minuscule. If I recall correctly, there were only nine PCGS MS67 1951-S WQs until I sent this trio in and then the population "exploded" to a full dozen. Currently, the PCGS population for this coin in MS67 is in excess of 150-pieces.
Once again Great Story and Great pictures. That is amazing that they all got the MS 67 grade that long ago and sure some of those in your collections are now easy + coins. Thanks for sharing and the pops are exploding on all the Varieties too.
I sent in 8 coins for the Quarterly special and this is one of the first out of those to pop up. This coin is only the 6th coin graded for the 1943 S 504 and the first one I have found Raw...There are 2 MS 66 2 MS 65 and now 2 MS 64 and once again I feel lucky to have found it......Enjoy Tom
I have never seen one of these 1943-S RPM coins in-hand, but the images make it look like the S is severely malformed. Is it a double mintmark or do you think there are more than two?
Congrats on the RPM.
I had to look it up in my CPG as I'm not familiar with it.
The description there is "A secondary mintmark is visible south.....".
I'm curious to hear 1tommys own description.
"If I say something in the woods and my wife isn't there to hear it.....am I still wrong?"
Well I just went back and pulled up this picture from when I bought the coin. Part of the S is protruding from your left hand tail of the S But with a good glass you can also see another part coming out of the middle of the east of the S.
For some reason the true view if you look at that picture you will see the eagles right wing looks like it was die polished out? But in this picture that is not the case. I also think with a good loupe you will see what I saw.
The S itself is flat and fat but I am thinking 2 strikes s over s south and inverted s. Honestly I cannot figure out that tail coming off the s in that direction....Its interesting....And the True View just looks weird,,,,,,,
Congrats Mark On hitting 40 percent and that's another nice addition to Your set. I also saw Mike (Morgandollar1878 ) hit 50 percent on his Set. That's gonna be the milestone for me is the 50 percent on a 185 coin set. Hopefully with all the varieties I have in there now I will be close..........Enjoy Tom

Thank you for your interpretation of the mintmark area.
Picture of the 43 S in the CPG does not really show what it looks like in Hand. Here is another one Just Back. Population is now 14 with 11 in MS now including this 1949 D FS 601 MS 62. Another coin I just learned the pickup points and found Raw.
This next one fills the 1949 D/D 501 slot. This and a AU 58 make coin number 6 and 7 total pops with 4 of those in MS. This one graded MS 64 and it's another one that I am happy to have found Raw..........
I would say you got a Great Price as My power went out for 2 hours during the storm. I really thought that it was a nice looking coin for the grade and had expected to throw a 800 dollar bid with a max of 900.
That's cool another member got it and please let us know what you think of the coin in Hand..I did wonder why it did not have a sticker with the Pedigree.......
That's a Nice 1964 and there has been a few coins I have missed for various reasons but I always think there are so many others out there yet to be found. Plus I hope someday @TomB is going to let a few of his beautiful coins go so I try to hold off on anything but the Varieties.
Mark I sent you a PM with the Pickup points on Both of the 49 d. I still have 4 coins getting graded and hopefully the 1943 S is the Trumpet Tail and I am right on the other 3 varieties. I added all of the other ones that just got done and our host shipped them yesterday and will take a picture as I had them all put in the New Green holders with there Quarterly Special.......

I like coins like this that exhibit split or multiple personalities.
When you can have luster, crust, color, satin, white,.......in any combination on the same coin it gives it a certain personality, imho.
Also, I like how you can remember the circumstances of the pick-up some 20 years after the fact and have named them.

Somewhere in one of these threads I have an image of what I call "The Triplets" and these are three 1951-S WQs that were sent in during the fall of 1998 and their MS67 populations went from 9-coins to 12-coins. We can see that the 9-coin population had been stagnant from at least late 1993.
