Holy Cow that is cool! I don't think I have ever seen such a m*****ive die crack on a modern coin and then to have it appear to have some cameo contrast is really something. It must have failed early.
Here is the reverse of one with thick color that truly is purple or neon blue in-hand. Perhaps it is too intense or too much color for some, but I think it delightful. I had the matching Roosevelt from a US Mint Set, but foolishly sold it years ago.
That proof WQ has a heck of a lot of pop and color! I'm guessing it has hairlines that weren't picked up in the image, which is why it graded PF66.
Way back when, we are talking late 1990s and early 2000s, I would be able to find similar WQs sold individually on the bourse a few times a year. At one time I sent in an entire run of them and they all came back PF67 and were then sold immediately. Oddly enough, I just came across the old submission form for that lot of coins and they went in about 15-years ago and I paid $1 each for the coins.
You are absolutely correct that grade has little, if anything, to do with the price or desirability of these coins with this eye appeal. You are building what will be a really terrific set of coins.
Looking at the Pop report I feel that this coin is very undervalued. There are 14 in this grade and 16 in MS-67. No MS-67+ grades.
All of the early 50 Denver issues are hard to get in MS-66+ or 67. According to the PCGS auction archive this is only the 2nd MS-66+ to be auctioned off.
I did not go to Fun this Year as I decided the money I would spend for hotels and gas could get spent on Quarters.
Heritage Auction I just could not win a coin Until Last Night. Seemed like the bidding was strong for Varieties.
But I want to say Congrats to the winner on GC last Night I think you got a Great Deal On the 1934 DDO MS 64
For the second time in 2 weeks I had problems with the GC web site, I was going for that 1934 DDO and was logged in and waited this time for over a hour.
Problem was when I bid in the last 40 seconds it took me back to the log in page and by the time I did that again it was to late.
This is my first purchase for 2016..................
I realize it is dangerous to interpret images, but that 1940-D/D appears to have really creamy, original luster that looks like untouched skin. I like it.
Someone else with have to post quarters to keep the thread alive.
I have run out of quarters to post, for now.
Okay, let me get off my lazy butt and see what coins I posted and what coins might be interesting to list next. Heck, I might even post an obverse and a reverse image in the same post.
Nice Proofs Greg and after 5 years submitting Proof Quarters I still scratch my Head sometimes when I see the Grades.
Tom that is another Nice Washington Quarter and just read your article The Mighty Toned Washington and must admit I wish I would have started sooner than I did.
Those are some amazing quarters and Love all the Pictures.
I am just going to keep buying and making the Varieties in the Hope that someday you will part with a Few of These Gems to Fill the other Holes in my Set...
Those 1957-D WQs can come with wonderful colors. Interestingly, I haven't held any of the new generation NGC holder. I've seen them, but not held them in-hand. Is the plastic better? That is, is it more optically clear? I happen to like the way they changed the insert.

They sure do come colorful Tom.
The new label was updated due to added security measures added. Here is the link about this:
I did get the 1940 D over the weekend and must admit the coin looks Great in hand. I have looked at a few examples and this one clearly in hand shows the Extra D.
Plus for the first time this coin went up 100 bucks in the price guide.....woohooo.......Enjoy

I don't participate in the Registry, but I love wonderfully toned WQs and own a few that I consider fall into that category. So, why not share?
This coin is amazing! My mint set is jealous.

Proof Washington Quarter. I think it is a keeper for my Toned 1950-1964
Proof Set. My two better quarters 1959 is at PCGS from a pretty picture
and 1962 will have its pretty picture taken at Winter FUN. I can't wait to
get images of those.

and pop. 1959 (keeper and spare to sell), 1961 (keeper posted above),
1962 (keeper and 2 spares to sell) and a 1963 (keeper). The spares just have
a lot less color coverage is all. They are PR66 and PR67. I will either
give them to Shane at Winter FUN to sell or I will let them go on the bourse.
Not sure yet...could be trade material as well. As for the 1961 posted
above, I do not see hairlines but on the obverse, there are a number of tiny
carbon spots, probably a few too many for a 67, at least that is my guess.
All 7 are in PCGS holders, PR66 and PR67 although that might change with
two of them since they are in for restoration to remove little areas of
not-so-great toning/spotting....so I hope to get each one to upgrade. We
will see in the next month or so. With these quarters though, the grades
matter little to none.

Just stopping by to say Merry Christmas to all the Washington Quarter collectors and show off a few of my recent pickups.
The first two are recent purchases in the slabs.
Grades posted on Friday and I picked up 3 out of 4 New Top Pop Varieties for my set.
One of the coins is my HOLY GRAIL. After a 3 year search...
This past week has been my best cherry picking week with about 6 new coins off Ebay. Buy The Book.......
More on those at a later date.... Also Congrats to the member who picked off the 1945 DDO from GC 2 weeks ago.
That was a nice coin and at twice the price guide you still got a great deal...
Enjoy

I'm still mad at myself for not making it

I did have a blast when I went last year and will make it down there again someday. Did you see Jon down there?

able to locate on the coin. Oh well.
