My take on the + grading ruined it for most of Us. There aren't any new registry sets being made. and some are even selling there sets. It became to much of a greed game. I am not submitting quarters anymore. I have submitted over 1000 quarters in the past, but it is just got out of hand now.
This used to be really fun for me. I wish the + grading never happened. Just My 3 cents. >>
200 The past 5 years I have learned so many things from members here, and when I first joined I actually thought they got the grades right the first time everytime.
I have also learned in the past 2 years for a Variety to get the proper grade it deserves you must submit without variety the first time.
This whole plus system and watching some of the coins that there giving the plus too has changed my whole outlook on continuing this set. After watching David Poole's Video the lightbulb went off for me.
I too have coins to send in but just have no more desire to play the game. My worse case of burnout and will just back off for awhile and see if and when I come back in.............Enjoy
Holy cow batman.....I didn't realize that many of the registry set owners were this "upset" (nice wording) with the PCGS "+" thing.
I figure that if the few of us that are on this board are this upset - or at least disappointed - then the majority of the registry set owners must be equally miffed.
1. Who can we contact to maybe get this mess resolved ? 2. What do we really want to ask for ? No more "+" at all? Make "+" a label only thing similiar to "First Strike"? Removing "+"ing from the registry sets - I would personally go for that one? What???? 3. How do we go about maybe getting this accomplished?
<< <i> Regarding the assessment of strike. What do you guys look for? I judge the obvious stuff like breastfeathers, hair detail. But I have little knowledge of the nuance of judging strike. What should I be looking for? >>
It really depends a lot on personal tastes. The last thing to strike up on most Washingtons (especially the clads) is the peripheral lettering. I like these letters to be full height with rounded tops rather than shallow and flat topped. You'll also see a lot of planchet marking on many specimens that aren't fully struck. This marking tends to be around the inside of the rim at about the level of the lettering. It's also on high spots.
I also like specimens struck by new dies. These will have nice crisp devices and no flow lines.
Well centered coins can be tough for some dates. Well centered coins are more likely to have a nice even strike across the entire obverse and reverse rather than just at one side.
<< <i>Regarding "+" grading.... Is the determination of whether you get a "+" or not automatic ? Basically is every coin submitted for grading considered for a "+"? >>
I believe any tier service coins will be considered for "+" Best I know.... No + plus grades thru Bulk grading
Last year at the Chicago ANA PCGS Set Registry luncheon, PCGS President, Don Willis, announced we would be adding bonus points for coins in sets that are the best possible grade with none graded higher. The time has come and this change has been made.
For many years, we’ve received feedback from members about our 1-10 weighting scale. For the most part, this scale has serviced us well. Generally, it takes into account the grade and rarity. However, in certain instances, specifically with coins that are the single finest or tied for the finest graded, the 1-10 scale doesn’t account for the premium most collectors must pay to own the very best.
To reward the owners of these very special coins, we are adding 2 bonus points for items with populations of one, none graded higher, and 1 bonus point for coins that are tied for the very best with none graded higher. These points will be added to the grade of your coin as shown in the examples below:
Your Coin Status Your Grade Points 67 Highest graded (PCGS Pop 2) 68 67 Highest graded (only one graded) 69 66+ Highest graded (PCGS Pop 2) 67.5 66+ Highest graded (only one graded) 68.5
Should the population change for your item and it loses either the "highest graded" or "highest graded, only one of that grade" status, the bonus points will be adjusted or dropped accordingly.
We are always amazed at the tremendous job our Set Registry participants do with building their collections and we feel the added points for "Pop Tops" will appropriately reward the "best of the best" and the collectors that pursue them. As always, we appreciate your participation in the Set Registry. Happy collecting!
Does anyone know of other Registry sites, other than PCGS and NGC ? They both have made lining their pockets with gold more important than supporting numismatics. When they throw away the historical significance of the people that came before us it tells me they just don't care.
PCGS and NGC have decided that "their" idea of quality is more important than a common concept that everyone in numismatics has accepted.
Don't get me wrong. I still believe that PCGS is a quality grader - as long as we are talking 1-70. I don't even care if someone puts a CAC, "+", "*", First Strike, FDOI, Early Release, MAC, or anyother label on the slab. The coin speaks for itself. If a coin has eye appeal to you - good for you, but don't expect me to agree and pay more for your feelings.
Last August, the peak of this phenomenon was reached when major dealers bussed in scores of paid buyers for the gold Proof Kennedy half dollar, which led to chaos at the ANA show in Rosemont. The first four purchased, once graded Proof 70, sold for $5,000 apiece, and the first was reportedly resold for $100,000. But those premiums dropped very quickly. Today coins with the show labels carry no premium over other graded examples. A lot of money was lost on these coins, which is likely to reduce premiums for such labels in the future.
For example, the FUN show Proof 70 silver American Eagles sell for about $50 over regular Proof 70 coins, and with time they are likely to be worth less.
Nice New Pickup Mark I like it. Slow and steady is the way to go.
Manocoins actually my 1935 did come from Panther(Dale) and he does have an eye for these toners.
I too finally broke out of my burnout and purchased this beauty from another member and it will move me back into Number 2.
Only 1 more coin to complete this Set.
This same coin cost me the number 1 spot 2 years ago as it was the first Graded DDR and at the time I really thought I could find one of these Raw and better than a 65.
Wow was I wrong....Now 2 years later it becomes part of my set and honestly the coin looks much better than a 65
I found almost every other Variety for the Proof Set Raw except this one. Now there are 3 total graded. So still a Rare coin to find. Enjoy...........
Thanks! It need professional images. Those are the sellers photos, and that probably explains the final price and the single bid. I was willing to roll the dice on it. It is way, way better in hand.
Truly, I did not read all the comments in this thread, but I did glance through the images and I notice many old friends of mine in their new homes. Also, Mitch has an amazing 1936-D at the beginning of this thread that is just super cool. I also have not posted images on the boards since the makeover and this will be a first; so let's hope that all goes as planned-
Those are two nice coins Dale and really like the 36 P and surprised at the grades.
Sparky that is one nice looking 1964 and some nice toning.
Tom what year is that coin?
After asking for years if anyone has written a book about washington quarters another member told me about James Wiles Books.
This past week I picked up volume 2 and 3 and after searching more I finally found Volume 1 this morning. These are a must have for the Variety collector.
Also purchased 3 new coins and will post when I get them in Hand......
It's in a PCGS MS65 holder. I'm at the Baltimore show right now, so I don't have my records with me, but I believe I purchased the coin in 2000 in a then-new blue insert holder. It has never gone for regrade or reconsideration.
Beautiful Coin Tom and sending in my next batch in a week including my second 1962 Proof Reverse Die Crack....Enjoy Here is the link to its sister already graded.First graded 1962 Die Crack

Been a few months between pick-ups.
I don't think many cared for the darker perimeter crazing.
Not a rainbow but it appealed to me.
