More good stuff today. I have been planning this for nearly 6 months, so it's nice to finally have a finished product in hand. There was a private signing in Detroit this week with Red Wings Captain / Future HOFer Henrik Zetterberg. It hit on a couple of projects, so I couldn't pass it up.

The star of the show (IMO):

2008 Stanley Cup Finals Ticket, Game 6. Detroit 3 - Pittsburgh 2. Thinking back, this game should never have happened, as the Wings blew a lead in Game 5 with 30 seconds left that would have clinched the Cup. But, they got the job done on the road in Pittsburgh. Zetterberg won the Conn Smythe as MVP, and signed the spot where I thought it would look best.

I also sent in 2 cards. 1) 2002 UD Young Guns Rookie (true rookie for HOF RC set) 2) 2000 UD Swedish pre-rookie

Every bit of that is cool! I've told you I like your idea for the Conn Smythe ticket project. And I really think "pre rookie" cards are awesome. I collect quite a bit of minor league baseball cards and I enjoy the pre RCs in the golf, tennis and soccer threads, for instance. Thanks for sharing some neat stuff.

Love the Zetterberg Young Guns, my guess is there are not a lot of those around with ink. It's not a super common card. If he stays healthy I think he has 4 years left at 65 point average which should put him in the Hall and in the 1000 point club. His playoff numbers are stupid good.

Posted this on another thread; thought I'd consolidate here.

A bunch of HOF Rookie autos. Funny thing, both the Bucyk and the Barber were PSA crackouts that went UP a full grade after being signed. One of the Dionne's was a PSA 6 that went down 1. The Bourque and Neely were in SGC holders that I cracked out and both "crossed" to the same grade. The Clarke, Lafleur, and Messier were raw and graded as expected.

Overall, happy. I think I tend to personally grade too conservatively, at least based on my last few subs. Grades have generally been at or better than expected.

Wow that's some awesome poppage! Lots of big names. I know you'll probably show photos of all (I hope) but I'm dying to see the Bourque!! Congrats Casey, nice job!

Mostly quiet on the home front, but, hey, it's another Langway RC. Perpetual quest to find a good one. Done at a private signing in VA.

I sent in a 65 card post-56 monthly special sub that logged today. Target date around the end of February, but there's always a chance it'll be done earlier. It was almost all modern shiny stuff - so I am again preparing to be brutalized as I think I know a lot more about grading vintage than I do modern. This stuff was all pack-pulled by myself, carefully handed, and quality control checked 2x .. so I don't know how you could be more careful. We'll see.

Cards that popped earlier took a bit to ship and should be here tomorrow or Thursday - will post scans when they arrive. I'll have to decide which of the Dionne RCs to keep - I think it's a close call between the 4 and the 5.

I still think Langway still works nearby my parents home. I have a TTM about to go out so hopefully the address is current. Nice pickup!
  • Options
Patrick, let me know if you get a return from Langway. Last I checked, he was tough TTM - but I think that was a change and he had been pretty good in the past. In any regard, good luck!

As promised some scans from the above-posted sub:

I also want to get people's opinion about which of these to keep. I am torn and will save my thoughts for a minute:

OK, that's it for now. No more HOF RC grading until the next Red Flip group sub. I still have 10 cards out at signings, so a few of those may be tricking in. If anyone hears of a Mario Lemieux siging, let me know! He's on my short list - but might be tough.

Tough call, the sig on the 5 is my favorite of the two, but I really like the inscriptions on the 4 and if going for a HOF auto'd rookie run is the one I would likely keep.

If I was keeping one Dionne for myself, I would keep the one on the right. I like the crispness of the auto.
  • Options
That Bourque is the sexiest hockey card I've seen in a long time and I love the old school Canucks get up Neely's wearing! Lots of Bruins love in this update. One more note on the Neely: you and I have discussed this before, but I think 84 OPC hockey is one of the very best designs of all time, in any sport.

Regarding the Dionne autos, it's tough, but I'd keep the one on the right. I like the thinner marker.
  • Options
I like the fact that he added his number and hof enshrinement to the one on the left, but I would still keep the one on the right. It's cleaner and crisper.

I love the Konstantinov that says "red army" haha. And always cool to get a signed '51. You have a few signed 51's, right? I know you have Howe signed. How many would you say you have signed from that set?

Love that Federko. Bernie has a great signature.

Thanks. Maybe everyone knows this already, but Konstantinov was a core member of the Red Wings in the 90s but suffered a career ending injury in a car accident after they won their first Stanley Cup in 97. As a result, his auto is fairly rare and valuable. I think this is his most desirable card and it's a nice autograph and the card is in pretty good shape. He was obviously Russian (well, Soviet). The Wings had a bunch of 'em. Sergei Fedorov's rookie is also a "Red Army" card. They came as 1/pack inserts in the 1990 Topps/OPC set.

As far as 1951 Parkhurst cards, I have a few. This was the first post-war hockey set so it contains a TON of HOF RCs of players who started in the mid-late 40s and later. Gordie Howe, Maurice Richard, Terry Sawchuk, etc. I have picked up several for my HOF rookie set: Bill Gadsby, Howe, Alex Delvecchio, Edgar LaPrade, Red Kelly, Bert Olmstead, and Marcel Pronovost. This one isn't a HOFer, although he was a good player. It's for my ever-growing collection of signed Red Wings cards. I also had him sign a 1954 Topps card, but didn't get a chance to scan that.

Thanks. He does. It's usually solid - this particular card was one of the best of his that I had seen. He usually signs this card in a different place. The inscription tied it all together. And, it was an OPC that looks to be 6+ (only flaws are lower-left corner ding and centering).

Hiya Casey - as usual, very nice sigs.

I especially like Federko's sig - some people just have something special IMO and that's one of them.

    Merry Christmas.

Some blue flip PSA/DNA poppage from a group sub on another site. 21 total items, all will be FS, with the exception of the Yzerman ticket which I am going to keep for my collection of signed Stanley Cup Championship Red Wings tickets. It is a ticket to game 4 of the 1998 SCF and signed by Yzerman who was the Conn Smythe winner. Scans will be posted when I get the cards back in the next 10 or so days.

Got back late last night from a trip to Georgia to see family. Nice drive. Came home to a pile of mail, but mostly items that I had purchase for resale or that were not yet complete (cards to be signed or graded). So, a couple cards to show, but not a ton ...

1990 OPC Premier Jaromir Jagr RC - private signing
1990 OPC Premier Jeremy Roenick RC - TTM
1980 Topps Canadiens Leaders Guy Lafleur / Pierre Larouche - TTM. Finally got this back from Lafleur; I had assumed it was lost. Probably took about 5 months to get both. Multi-signed TTMs are fun.
1990 Score Martin Brodeur RC - eBay. I had a blue flip version, sold that for $75 and picked this up for $45. I think I did good, especially considering the early version of his autograph (probably 93 or 94)

Back from a weeklong trip to Miami. Much nicer weather down there than in MI! Came home to a pile of work that I punched out this morning, and now I have some time to get my cards organized. Here's the week of mail:

1992 UD Chris Pronger RC. Future HOF. eBay - thanks luftmich!
1983 OPC Scott Stevens RC. HOF. ebay - filler until I get a nicer card
1982 OPC Dale Hawerchuk RC. HOF. TTM - this was over 200 days; glad to get it back
1991 Pro Set Vladimir Konstantinov. eBay - another nice pickup for under $10. Same seller as before - definitely real, IMO.
1998 SCF Cup Winning Ticket signed by Steve Yzerman - back from a blue flip group sub on another page. Happy to have this finished!
1954 Parkhurst Red Kelly. TTM, blue flipped via the same sub as Yzerman. These are my 2 "keepers" of the 21 I subbed. Others FS.
Signed Red Wings ticket. Nicklas Lidstrom, 1000th point game. This doesn't really fit a major collecting area of mine, but I thought it was really cool, so I grabbed it on eBay. I'll send it in for PSA/DNA red flipping / ticket authentication the next time I build up enough of those to sub.

Casey, more awesome pick ups. Got me thinking...I have a ticket stub from the Cup winning game from the 2002 cup. It'd be awesome to have it signed by Yzerman. If you come across a good opportunity to send it in that doesn't cost an arm and a leg, please keep me in the loop!
  • Options
Will do. Yzerman has been pricey ($175 at last DC Sports signing?). You might think about getting it signed by Lidstrom, who was the Conn Smythe winner that year. I have one, too, and am waiting for him. He'll definitely be doing signings in the U.S. next year after he gets into the HOF.

Awesome. Yes, that's a good point...forgot Lidstrom got the Conn Smyth. Were you at the game as well? That was the coolest Red Wings experience for me, followed by the Winter Classic last year.
And yeah, $175 seems like a lot but I'm not surprised.

December CC Special. Logged 12/16. This was not expected this early. My first major modern sub. Feel like I did pretty good. These were almost all boxes I ripped after Black Friday--I bought a bit of Prizm and a couple other misc. boxes from Blowout and D&A. The 2011 ITG Mrazek, 2014 UD YG Sproul, and the Prizm Mrazeks auto were bought on eBay. This is the 2nd consecutive sub where my one and only ITG card came back short - not sure what is up with that.

    Thanks, Jim.

I opened a tin of 14-16 UD Series 1 hockey today on a whim. I got an Ekblad YG, who I know is good. Anyone else that I should looking for in this year? I feel out of it.

Busy stretch. Thought I would share scans of a couple of the "keepers" from the sub posted above. All self-pulls.

You know I love the old Parkies. And some day we need to talk about what you do with your scanner settings that makes the shiny stuff look so good.

Got some poppage from a blue flip group sub from December. Again, I went 20-for-20 on authentic autos, which is really great. Combined with the last sub, that's a perfect record on the last 40. Hopefully this isn't just good luck--it may be--and it means that I'm getting better at self-authentication. They were almost all bought signed and unauthenticated. I'll post some scans when I get them back, but the sub included:

    1954 Topps 27 Marcel Pronovost
    1960 Parkhurst 23 Sid Abel
    1952 Parkhurst 87 Ted Lindsay
2009 Maine Black Bears Gustav Nyquist (Detroit Red Wings)

    1961 Parkhusrt 43 Henri Richard
    1961 Parkhurst 27 Bill Gadsby
    1961 Parkhusrt 11 Bob Baun
    1961 Parkhurst 5 Dave Keon
    1954 Topps 20 Bill Gadsby
    1974 O-Pee-Chee 316 Steve Shutt
    1965 Topps 31 Gerry Cheevers
    1952 Parkhurst 34 Leo Boivin
    1970 O-Pee-Chee 51 Serge Savard
    1981 Topps 18 Jari Kurri
    1984 Topps 49 Steve Yzerman
    1984 Topps 96 Pat LaFontaine
    1984 O-Pee-Chee 259 Chris Chelios
    1990 O-Pee-Chee Premier 100 Jeremy Roenick
1998 Upper Deck 234 Martin St. Louis

The first 5 above the break are to keep. I'll sell the others.

This is a pretty huge card for me.

Yes, it was once stapled. No, I really don't care!

Sid Abel, HOF, member of the Detroit Red Wings Production Line with Gordie Howe and Ted Lindsay. d. 2000. Reasonably tough auto on vintage cards; this is the 1st signed 1951 Parkhurst I have seen. Arguably his RC; he was featured in the 1940 OPC set, which is probably more a photo than a card, and the 1951 Berk Ross set of the same year. The post-war HOF RCs set does not include the Abel, though it should, like the Milt Schmidt, etc. - but the HOF RC set registry includes this as a RC along with the Berk Ross and OPC.
