I have not been tracking 70's, but in the last year paid close attention to 80's stuff. I picked up a 1981 wax from BBCE last year at $90, a few days ago (not gone) it was at $165. A 1983 box I think was around $140? Now $195. I have not really searched out for 1982 or 1983 rack boxes, but at $335, that seems pretty hefty. Are these really that hard to get? 1984 Donruss was $240 a few months ago, now at $250. I think I paid $90 for a 1985 Fleer Wax which is now up at $145. The cello is at $165.

A few days ago quantity of 80's unopened was 192, now its 175. So its been getting eaten alive. Its a hungry business right now.

It will balance itself out as more PSA 10's get unleashed on the market which will drop the price on some of the more available stuff. 1980 seems to be as dry as 1979.

please view prior testimonials regarding the trust factor adding a percentage to retail.

i won't dispute the fact that this stuff seems to be getting harder to acquire - without the added reservations of doubt, which is what seems to cloud people's vision when it comes to the discussion of "Who Else Can I Trust Besides You-Know-Who?"

the answer right now appears to be Nobody.

in this business the objective isn't only selling product, it is also selling yourself. some folks do it much better than others.

<< <i>It's the market that's drying up, not just BBCE.

Another bit of evidence of that is the earlier discussed group rip hasn't happened ... as people are just going in solo to buy up the pricey items sans discount.

I'm still impressed that flatfoot (Manny) dropped $7,500 on a '78 rack case. That's over $100/rack and about a 30% markup over what they're selling ok ebay these days averaging $80. I still remember a year or two ago being able to pick then up in volume for $40/each.

There has been discussion about how this activity will effect the slabbed market. IMO these crazy prices will keep the grade worthy resources sealed and depress the frequency of high grade pops. It'll take a while as these higher prices will also push people to sell their loose materials for a strong profit ... materials people will feel ok ripping as it's not in a sealed box or case. But once this wringing out of the loose stuff happens ... it's gonna get quite arid. And I think this process will make the 2014 National even more insane for unopened prices than the 2013 one was ... and following in the next 2-3 years we'll start to see the effects in the slabbed market as the worthy premium ripping materials vanish. >>

Drying up meaing people are hoarding (especially the big dogs) not that it is gone.

Itz, they're vanishing from the chopping blocks. Sure there are enthusiastic rippers like myself and some others who will still rip this stuff, but it seems more and more are just saving what's left and then selling it, unopened, at higher prices to other people who just save it. All this time it's not getting ripped and therefore reducing the quantity of submitable worthy cards.

And yes slab prices have increased, that's clear, but I'm talking to another degree of magnitude. I've seen more and more people entering the hobby, and if that continues as supply dwindles ... well the fireworks we're seeing now are just a taste of what's to come. >>

what's to come is here. do me a favor please and explain this: '76 Carter PSA 9 wtf

check out the prior history on this card as well as the bidding for this one and it's almost so easy to figure out.....except why the winner wanted to win.

I, too, have noticed the climb in prices -- I opted out of 85F and 83T because of it -- but the important question is...

...group rip? Even at these prices it is better than I can do per pack at the LCS.

    Itzagoner,
having bought 1976s heavily over 6 years, I am completely dumbfounded by that price for the Carter 9. What is even more stunning to me is that 3 different people bid over 75.00 for this common 9. However, there have been some hammer prices over the past couple years - the Eck has been strong, but extremely low pop commons like Briggs, Oliva, Torre, and Miller have received huge bids.

i'm only speculating, of course, but it appears the seller had a 2 out of 3 bidder advantage, catch my drift?

so all that confounds me is how the bait got taken.....unless, the winner is planning to try and bump it. not out of the question, either. that card IS dead freekin centered, the market was flooded with 10's two years ago, but has since seen far fewer, at least according to VCP.

I was lucky enough to pick up a few of the 79 super cellos...i called almost immediately after they were posted on steves site and they had only 2 left....it is becoming almost impossible to aquire late 70s unopened without paying ridiculous prices for it...guess id better hang on to the material ive hoarded over the past few years(there doesnt seem to be a cap on how high the prices are rising)...Im always looking for late 70s stuff, particularly 78 and 79 cello(raw and psa) packs and psa graded 76 opc wax

They will raise prices until the market makes them stop.

In recent months any fresh supply has vanished quickly. In a few days you will know if the market can handle these higher prices.

If these sit at these levels the market will have reached a near term peak. If they sell out you will see further price hikes.

This is going to be entertaining to watch. This could be an inflection point.

<< <i>A) how are "worthy premium ripping materials", er, unopened boxes vanishing if they are just moving from one guy's warehouse to another guy's storeroom?

Anytime a new buyer is involved in a transaction, the waiting period starts all over, so effectively, the product is removed from the market. Anything I buy is going into storage and eventually into my man cave. It won't be opened and it won't be sold until I die and it gets passed along to my heirs. Any collector of unopened stuff understands this and I think the two sides are just a matter of taking the hoarder view or the ripper view. So, no matter how small or large of a purchase I make; it's off the market, essentially having the same short term effect of someone ripping, it's just not available.

Some precipitation today, accompanied by price movement. Invariably, kvetching will ramp up as a result of this, but so will the likelihood of 70s unopened making an appearance from the woodwork.

<< <i> But hey, on the opposite end of the spectrum, if you can get by on just buying the gum instead of the cards, you can always hit the BIN on this auction:

    Gum >>

Wow. That is sad. With a price of $4 per stale stick of gum, the seller obviously knows where its value lies.

Always buying 1971 OPC Baseball packs.

Shout out to all those forum members who had the foresight/discipline to stash unopened over the last 5-10 years. You are going to make an absolute killing on that stuff when and if you decide to sell.

When I started collecting unopened about a year ago I thought it'd be awesome to get a box from every year from 79 (when I was born) through 90. I think I'm gonna have to probably stall at 81 or 82. Glad I got two boxes of 83 last summer at the Natty.

Looks like I purchased 4 packs in this break and for the life of me I do not remember opening these. I must have though, because I know I don't have any sealed packs from this year left... Bummer

I missed the 1980 boxes. But....at $850 each, there is a good chance I would have not grabbed one. There are some stuff in there that I am liking though....we will see how my Christmas goes...
