So Nathan we all want to know, are you going to use the funds or profit from the recent AWESOME pull you got??? Will add a nice chunk of change to you total already. You are well on your way to at least a 4/5 Mantle by next Convention!!!

Keep rocking it out, and keep this thread updated.

Not going to use the funds from the Triple autograph. If I don't get a legit offer I am going to keep that card in my personal collection.

If I had got a dude box I wasn't going to take the $675.00 out of the Mantle funds.

I bought a Cam Newton Playbook rookie patch autograph booklet for $100.00 at the local card show. I then sold it to a Cam collector for $200.00.

I got a pic of similar card off eBay but not exact card.

That brings the new total to $5103.56

I was able to score a pretty sweet little deal.

Bought a total of (6) Factory sealed 1992 Fleer Update sets for a total of $30.00.

Sold three of the sets for $100.00.

That puts the total at $5173.56 + three 1992 Fleer Update factory sets.

Yes, I also got a 1976 Topps Baseball Complete Set for $50.00.

Keep in mind this was a dealer/autograph dealer that only deals in the "shiny" stuff and didn't know his stuff and threw out low numbers on those items.

He bought an entire card shop inventory from a dealer from about fifteen years ago.

Those seven items were the only items I knew I could make some good money on and bought them.

That brings the total to $5123.56 and (3) 1992 Fleer Update Complete Sets and a 1976 Topps Baseball Complete Set.

We sold two more sets for $30.00 each and the last set I am going to keep for my PC. The box is a little beat up and don't want an unhappy customer.

$5183.56 was the cash total with a 1976 Topps set.

We bought two 1995 Topps Factory sets for $5.00 each and sold one via ebay for $62.23.

That brings the cash total to $5235.79 with (1) 1995 Topps Factory set and (1) 1976 Topps Baseball set.

I have made some good flips and want to share them here but I am not 100% that I am going to buy a 1952 Topps Mantle with the money. I have gotten into modern cards alot the past six months and I know those are just "shiny" new cards around here. However, that is what I enjoy so I am still not sure what I plan to buy at the National with my profits.

However, we will cross that bridge when I get there.

I sold the 1995 factory set for $50.00 to put the cash total at $5285.79 and one 1976 Topps set.

Had $900.00 in this from the local card show and was able to sell it to a buyer in China for $2350.00. I cleared roughly a $1250.00 profit.

That puts the total at $6535.79.

I was thinking LeBron Exquisite Rookie Auto rookie or Durant Exquisite Rookie Auto.

It may just come down to what we can find for the best value at the National.

Please for the love of the greatest sports card ever....52' mantle...please make it yours...this has been the coolest thread ever.
I understand your love for modern cards like the James or Durant Rookie...

Get all three!!!! But do it as you are doing it now. Keep flipping and posting.

    That's all I have I say.

Great flip. You truly have a knack for this but I kind of had a feeling this was going to happen. That you would have so much money put in front of you that naturally you would start thinking of other things you can purchase and to start to lose focus with all that temptation out there of different card selections. I wish you would really re-consider still chasing the card you originally had your eyes set on and go for that Mantle. This may be your only chance to get one in this lifetime. The price of that card will only to continue to rise in value. If that's not a good enough reason, well how about this Nathan - Its a freakin 1952 Topps Mantle! High graded at the rate your going as well.

Wow, I just read the whole thread, what an awesome ride it's been so far! Big props to 1980scollector for not only doing this, but taking us along on the journey with him.

I did something similar a few years ago, buying and flipping to make money for the National, but on a much smaller scale than you. I did end up spending some before the show, but only because a once in a lifetime opportunity came up (Ted Williams auction at Fenway Park), and I would have regretted not going and at least trying to get what I wanted. I know what a struggle it is to have that ca$$$h sitting there, seeing things you would like come up around you and fighting the urge to dip in and and spend some of the money. Good for you for having that willpower, it is tough!

And as far as what your going to buy at the National.....is this your first National? Baltimore was mine and I had NO IDEA just how big it would be or how much variety would be there. I went with a small list and that's what I focused on the first couple of days, finding those items and finding the best deal, or at least the item I wanted the most. If your going to spend this money on something for your personal collection, listen to your heart as well as your head while looking and keep an open mind! If you go in focused on one item, you may miss that "it" piece your looking for.

In the end, you want to buy something that years after your purchase, you look at it, smile and say, "Wow, that is cool!" At least that's what my goal was. image

I can see this thread is going to be like the tv show "Lost". I'm sucked into the story and I can't wait to see the end! Just don't kick me at the end like those guys did. image

I can appreciate that line of thinking. I believe the Mantle is a no-brainer investment. It is something that I have thought about a great deal. I imagine the moment I get the Mantle and it just feels like "OK, what do I do with this now?" It's the holy grail for many but not me. However, when I think about a LeBron 2003-04 Exquisite RPA I get excited and think about putting it in my safety deposit box and letting it appreciate over the years. Then explaining the journey to my sons one day(they know LeBron). Do you have any idea what a MJ rookie would go for if only 99 existed? Yeah, me either but it would be a very large figure. The Heat are about to go on a championship run over the next three or four years. That is just my thoughts. Again, I share it all with you guys to get some feedback. At the end of the day, I will make a decision and feel like we have already been succesful.

My objective in this journey was to show you can take an act of kindness($500 gift from my brother) and with a little hard work you can turn it into something special.

I might just buy a Mantle and a high end basketball rookie card of Durant or LeBron.

I have some flips to update and the money is going to be there.

    We're going to make it.

I would consider what The Cup Crosby and Ovechkin /99 RC's did when looking at the Lebron. That said I think the 52 Mantle is the hobbys most overated card and holds value that young collectors even now don't get to the same degree. I would take his 1951 Bowman RC all day long over the 52. Personally, I would look at Ruth.
