I tried to buy a Barber Dime today but the man said that the last one of millions left in the world was sold to a gentleman who looked like Saint Nick ...LOL
Hey all you Barber fanatics. I've had this coin for a while, but I got around to taking some new photos of this "Old Friend". This was the first pedigreed coin I ever purchased, at a bit of a premium, and I'm not the least bit sorry. I'm not really one to oooh and ahhh about coins, but this one keeps me staring at it. It really looks like this in-hand too. The color around Liberty's eye and the Eagle's right wing (viewer's left) is especially nice.
What is the history/status/story of that quarter album. Because if its all legit, that is officially the best thing I've seen on this or the previous Barber thread. Just because.
We're all born MS70. I'm about a Fine 15 right now.
Dennis - My raw barber quarter collection is legit and has taken many years to put together The two Wayte Raymond boards were blank quarter boards before I printed the labels and attached them. I think it's a great way to house a raw set. The coins are mostly VF's and XF's. There are a couple AU's and the 13-S is only a fine. I took minor artistic license with the 01-S. The one in the board is an 01-P. I couldn't bring myself to crack out the one that goes in there. This is the coin that goes in the set.
Vern l It's not having what you want, it's wanting what you've got.
Awesome Barber quarter set.....that set likely would have been difficult to assemble even back when the Wayte Raymond albums could be purchased 'new'! While I certainly appreciate all the monster toners, etc that get posted on this thread, to me, as someone who dabbles in the circ quarters, this a really striking display of a very difficult set to put together.
This one is going off to a new home today.....a better date, that I've managed to acquire a few duplicates of:
That is an amazing and well-matched set of very nice high-grade circulated barber quarters. I love it. Coins with that look are very special and are worth far more than any guide lists that I know of.
Congratulations on putting together a truly nice and wonderful set!
Thanks to all for the kind words about my raw quarter set. It continues to be a work in progress, with upgrades or just coins I like better moving in to it.
Walkerguy - very nice 05-O, and just one of a few, eh? If you'd ever like to consider a trade or two, just give me a PM.
Glenn - neat triple RPM. Look forward to seeing more on this coin.
Jim - Always good to get your attention, and you're right, I wouldn't. Maybe if that perfect AU comes along and I'm lucky enough to see it before you or Doug.
Pic for tonight, the 09-O from my raw set.
Vern l It's not having what you want, it's wanting what you've got.
Vern offered it back to me when he herd I was back buying for myself again, was glad to get it.
I have every coin back that I had before (date wise) except my 1870-cc quarter. Rich's customer owns it , I told Rich U if he ever sells it , offer it back to me. Unless I find one in the meantime. I missed one LIZ had last year, she had already sold it. Walt K was telling me about it at a show in Raleigh, but when I called her it was already gone.

Walt moves as fast as Mike when it comes to acquiring coins, there must have been a reason for passing on the 70-CC. Price, probably not, Walt can work a deal with the best of them.
For tonight, another from my raw set, acquired about 15 years ago. I later found out it came from very large, very old collection that a local auctioneer handled over many years. The heirs took their time.
Vern l It's not having what you want, it's wanting what you've got.
Logman, Congrats on your new addition. Family trumps Barbers. Master MF, Thanks for input on the toning. I won't click on your links. I'll get jealous. Besides, I'm not a registry fan. I like when people post individual coins, but privacy trumps registry. Keyman, Looks like your 01-S trumps everything. Johnnie Walker, I love the raw 05-O. I needs me one of those. Ponyboy, I concur. That was a tease. Lets see the coin! Looks like a neat find.
Yeah, I started back buying coins again for my self. Using some of the profits from the store. I had nice coins before, but now I am even more selective and buying the right coins even if I have to wait it out. I am not sure why walt did not buy it, he told me it was nice, but priced in the 40 range. I never got to see it, not to get in Liz 's business,(she wouldn't disclose who bought it, understandably) but I called every one I know , and actually tracked it down , but it was sold to another specialist dealer in seated coins and then already placed with a customer. The dealer who placed it said it was nice!
As of this Jan , the store front has been sold to cash for gold buying group. However, I retain rights to the gold , and first shot on any thing collector coin related that comes in that I want. (also off the record , I am the financial backer for the store) I did not sell my name as I wanted to stay in business, just no longer run the store front, also due to legal reasons in case something came up, like them buying stuff they shouldn't or an incident. There is a clear separation!
What prompted this was a few reasons: 1) the robbery a few years ago , the main guy(bif brut looking dude) that I had helping me's wife got cancer so he was not able to work any longer, the second guy was getting to old and falling asleep often, tried to use an outside source, but had problems with internal theft. So the last few months of 2012, had my son helping me, one day in mid nov, had 5 armed guys getting ready to come in on us from the front and rear of the building. Luckily, a customer of mine who is ex special forces notice the staging and called the sheriff's dept. The arrested them with guns in the stolen car, and a bunch of stolen jewelry from an armed robbery they just did that am. after that I said that's it:
also: There are so many gold buying shops on every corner, it dilutes the amount coming in. In mid 2011-early 2012 we were buying at a rate of 20k per day, now its around 4k a week. Many will disagree with me, but The gold buying shops days I believe are numbered, as I think we are on a down hill slide as money flows back into real estate stocks, etc As gold prices decline, people are less willing too sell the jewelry. and even though demand for silver is high, the profit margin on it is so thin If you buy/sell fair
Master MF, I saw that 93 on Teletrade. If it didn't have that shield ding I would have been on it. Still a good looking coin and I'm glad we didn't get into a bidding war. Congrats.
PS Not often do you see real nice Barbers on Teletrade.
Vern - I love that set - the 14-S is a pristine coin that defines "choice original". I know of no additional adjectives to illustrate the amazing accomplishment that is that set or for the ridiculous condition rarity (sweet original choice VF) of that 01-S .. I have never even seen one until now. So not being able to offer anything that hasn't been divulged, I will move on to newps
I thought the 07-D in 63 was the nicest Barber in that recent TT auction - the 12-S Half was pretty nice also. Congrats Mike on that 93 - It was a Teletrade "pick" you know . I thought David Lawrence had copyright to that phrase ..... Or is it staff selection
I used restraint to not bid on any of it saving the dry powder for the Baltimore show and the upcoming Heritage and Stack's auctions. A few of the upcoming coins will be quite popular to say the least.
<< <i>Is that 01-o quarter in PCGS 58 (coming up in Heritage) the one that was recently made by DK or has it been around a while: >>
Although the new fade holder is not evidence enough to say it is a "fresh coin", the pop report of 58 graded 01-O went up by 1 in the past 2 months - I would say it is a new coin. Not to speak for DK's business model, I would suspect he would sell it via different means than through a HA. Certainly that coin is on a lot of want lists, probably too many for him to single someone out. I would suspect he would do just as well selling it in one of his own auctions, or he could pretty much name his price and have little trouble locating a buyer.
As if that coin weren't already on dozens of watch lists, coins people are hoping stay "quiet" ... Although, I believe the 99-S in NGC 64 to be the grand "Barber" prize of that auction. There are numerous secondary and tertiary "prizes" to be had for sure.
Jim - Sounds like a very good call to sell shop. Glad you're out and healthy.
Mike - nice newp.
Scott - Lots of intriguing barber quarters in the Central States auction. Can't wait to see what they look like in hand. A few will bring crazy money, I predict.
Jim - I'd guess the 01-O is new, but not from DK. If it looks good in hand, someone better be ready to open the check book.
Only newp from yesterday's local show was an 1836 quarter with neat die cracks, so no pics here. But thought I'd post another beauty from the Iowa collection (I only wish it were mine):
Vern l It's not having what you want, it's wanting what you've got.
Dont worry barber fans I am not in the running for the 01-o. I knew dave had made one and was wondering if this was his old coin. I know he sold it to a customer, but wondered if the customer turned around and placed it due the the 58 craze too maximize the $. I was just curious as I know its a tough coin in an impossible grade.
I have migrated back a bit into earlier series , although would not pass up an opp to upgrade the 01-s.
Yes Dave Kahn (tried to keep from mentioning his whole name. I figured those in the know would know who I was reffering too. I know he recently made one a while back, as he told me, but mentioned he sold it to a barber fanatic customer
Heritage sale, but not the dallas one, coming up in central states. Being that the auction catalog is still in Pre-preview early stages, they put some coins up that are not yet titled, the only way you can find it is to scan each and every coin down a series of coins, this is how I look to see what is coming up down the road in case I have an intrest. I saw that there was an 01 something in a pc58 holder, hoping it was an s it is going to be an 01-o in 58. Photo's are up, but title and description are not. There is a tough seated coin coming up in that sale that is the same not yet titled, but photo's are up and it has my intrest. As they continue to work on the sale, more and more data , descriptions, come to light.
Hey Fellas, Somebody's gotta help me out here. Now I don't got all the dots on my dice, so please explain what you mean when you say that DK "made" an 01-O. Please don't tell me he rubbed up an unc. cause I think my head is gunna explode.
Jim, Don't know you but you got guts. Helluva story. Thanks for market news. Good info.
Mike - Always on the hunt and seems like you always land a trophy
Paesan - Jim means the 01-O was submitted by DK and received a grade of 58 .. "To make" a coin is a term for being the one to get it slabbed (initially) - Although the possibility of rubbing up an MS coin to potentially create AU58 graded coins has been tossed around for a few years and for some coins the demand for AU58 is greater than MS60-963 or even 64 .. The recent 07-S in 58 selling for north of $2500 is proof .. If you check the Heritage archives you will find a very nice looking MS64 1907-S that sold for $1600 less than a year earlier .. I rest my case (Although I do not agree with the long term viability of it, one never knows .. I do believe coins with nice eye appeal that are original will always sell for strong prices - Mint State or slider Unc. or otherwise)
Keyman....Straight up. It's the only way to play! And if you ask me, Texas Holdem aint poker. Beautiful raw set you got goin on there. I can look at them all day.
I agree Paisan .. I grew up playing 7 card stud - that was the only game (unless you were sophisticated enough to play hi/lo split, razz or low ball). I have also dealt cards in public and private card rooms off and on for over 25 years.
NLHE is a fad that has afforded the masses an outlet to gamble.. The fact that the main event at the WSOP is NLHE only reinforces this. It really is the most simplistic form of the game and has the most controlled odds in the game. Playing stud allows the person who can keep track of the cards an upper hand where NLHE advantage goes to those who can read behaviors and human tendencies (this element does come into play in stud and other limit games, but in a limit game the decision to call, raise or fold is much more centered around the math and pot odds than it is around the ability to read a tell)
Sorry for the poker blog on the coin forum .. I call your Barber Dime and raise two Barber Quarters
SAM-I can tell you're a Wiseguy! You said what I think but I can't get the words out. Honestly, I can't watch that stuff on TV. I'd rather play solitaire. Since its a coin thread, cards and coins do go hand in hand. I used to love sitting around with my paesanos and wait til the perfect moment in the night to raise a buck, and chuck in an old Morgan! It was priceless to see the eyes go wide and everyone would toss in their bills to get the coin. Now I'm not too smart, but I was smart enough to know when to chuck silver and rake currency!
