If they get some guys back healthy, they have a shot.
Tough division this year, wouldn't be surprised if both wild cards come out of the AL east. >>
Very True, we have been getting HAMMERED with injuries, I know its not his fault but Ellsbury is fragile, I had high hopes for him this year to the tune of 30/30 +.
Thank you to the idiot who continues to rob me of Red Sox games on Saturdays....YO, I'm more than a thousand friggin miles away, and at least 300 from Tampa...I don't GAS about all the other games that you pinheads show on Saturdays. I will NEVER understand why these clowns eliminate Red Sox broadcasts on Saturdays in the Atlanta market.
OTOH, nice to see the team pull it out in the 9th.
<< <i>I agree, I cant get it on Saturday here in Albuquerque either.
I did subscribe to MLB audio though so I can at least listen to the games. >>
I like the MLB.com "at bat" program on my smartphone. Most of the time I don't get to watch the game until 8 PM, so I listen to WEEI through the smartphone for the first hour of the game. Most expensive app purchase I have ever made at $14.99, but well worth it.
Tigers aren't just underperforming.... they just ain't that good! Fielder, Cabrera, Verlander and a bunch of AA ball players. You guys will probably sweep this series. You had better, because the Yanks are coming to our house to pick up 3 wins!!
I think if he increases his OBP and BA, shows skills at both corner spots, and stays healthy (most important), he could be the right piece for a team come July. I don't think the Sox will settle for just any deal, since he is still value-added to the team.

Agreed.
However this trade talk will either fuel his fire or get him real disgruntled, either is possible with Youk..

True but it could also fuel the Sox desire to get rids of him for short money. Im not really sure we will get a whole lot for him anyways, the guy cant seem to stay health, not to mention the fact that there have been reports of his negative attitude from time to time.

I like the move of Bard down to AAA. Maybe they can help him figure out how to find the plate and pitch at his usual speed. McClure and Valentine couldn't figure it out.
A stunning comeback...oops no bats in the bottom of the 10th.
ONCE AGAIN look at the LOBs. Great teams score the runs when they need them. Losses like this add up very quickly in September, especially when you're playing a higher ranked team in your division. Is Aceves really 0-3???
Ah, the never-ending highs and lows of being a Red Sox fan. BTW, Youk 0-5...I suspect Middlebrooks tonight...actually, I'd bet dinner with Perkdog's Perkies against a ham sandwich that he's in the lineup.
PS - Please tell the camermen NOT to show any pics of uber-toad, aka Lackless, it ruins the moment.
Strasburg is going to be tough, I thought this year they were going to put him on an innings count but no need to. This kid is the real deal and well recovered..
Marlon Byrd is toast...DFA today. I thought it was a poor pickup from the gitgo.
Anyone wanna guess how DiceK does today? Ok, how about he's gone by the 5th? This guy will eventually become the biggest bust in Red Sox history. Bad omen, Red Sox on my tv today...today is Saturday isn't it???
The team better wake up and put a string together, or they will slowly but steadily fade...I doubt the extra wild card will help them long term.
And (as predicted) out in the 5th. He got very lucky with the double play to stop the bleeding. He makes $10.3m. Unless he smokes it big time next go-round, he is not worth the coin given the performance.
Red Sox continue to be stuck in the quicksand. Unable to string wins together and losing at home. I still don't see a championship team here...wish I did, but I don't.
Oh, BTW, 4.5 back and in the cellar again...Yankees tied for first and moving on...gee, weren't they next to us just last week? Yup!!! No bats, no wins.
We're in last place by 6 games. Just swept by the Nats at home. Total margin of losses = 5 runs...LOB totals = 23. Where are the key hits?
Valentine has gotta be about to pull his hair out at this point. How can this team look so good and then not so good? Clearly the talent is there, but something is missing on this team.
Maybe after the All-Star break things will get better. Could be some trades in the brew...I think Youk is on the block, maybe others...time will tell. For sure they better figure this mess out...and SOON.
The Red Sox were hopping mad at the umpiring this weekend, particularly after Sunday's finale against the Nationals.
The Red Sox lost 4-3 and were outraged at the strike zone of home plate umpire Alan Porter, who they felt missed a Strike 3 call for closer Alfredo Aceves on a 1-2 pitch right before Roger Bernadina's game-winning double.
"Alfredo struck the guy out on a pitch that the whole ball is on the plate and he calls it a ball," manager Bobby Valentine said. "Then he hits an RBI."
Valentine wasn't around much longer. He was ejected for arguing after Dustin Pedroia objected to a strike call just off the plate during the final at-bat of the game. Pedroia kept jawing at Porter after striking out to end it, and the ump dismissively waved him off the field.
"I've got guys busting their butt, battling their butt off," Valentine said. "It's not right. Good umpires had a real bad series this series -- a real bad series -- and it went one way. There should be a review."
The Red Sox were still upset over the ejection of Kevin Youkilis from Friday's game for arguing balls and strikes. They managed just nine runs while getting swept by Nationals starters Stephen Strasburg, Gio Gonzalez and Jordan Zimmermann.
"I thought they pitched well," Valentine said. "I thought they got pitches in key situations that weren't strikes. The game is simple: Throw it over the plate, call it a strike. Don't throw it over the plate, call it a ball. It's simple. That's all. That's all anybody asks. I know it's been going on for 100 years. I'm not the first one to say it. But this was a pretty lousy series."
The Sox were swept to end a 1-5 homestand that dropped them six games behind Tampa, in last place in the AL East.
Red Sox salaries for 2012 = $173,186,617; the average salary is $5,093,724; the median is $1,556,250. We all know the season is 6 months long...begins in April, ends in September. If you get into the playoffs and beyond, that's extra coin. If you break those numbers down into a "normal workers" 40 hour workweek, you will lose your lunch. These guys are paid crazy money for what they do...and they ain't doin' it too well!!
So, let's see...60 games have been played, or approximately 37% of the season is history. John Henry has ponied up a numbing $64,079,048 at this point. John Henry's ROI you may ask? Well, his team appears to be slowly imploding. Mired in last place in their Division and 6 games out of first place. His manager (thinking this will inspire the team), is now going after umpires crying bad calls, which may have little merit.
I have always believed that salaries should NEVER be paid in advance. A tier payroll system should have been created depending upon years of MLB service...THEN, we see how well the player performed or not during the season. If you did x,y,z, well, let the Brink's truck pull into your driveway, if not the truck doesn't find your address. We can thank collective bargaining and the Scott Boras' of the game for the pay in advance mentality. Meanwhile, we the fans take it in the backside by continuing to spend hard earned dollars for high priced tix, beer, whatever at the ball park. Ever try to buy Monster seat tix, or tix to a Yankee game? Better be ready to spend some serious cash just to get into the game...if you can find tix. Monstah seats?? Fuggedaboutit.
It makes me sick to see Lackey sit on his arse enjoying the game (or being forced to attend), and contributing nada, not even when healthy. Others are in his bracket, but you get the idea.
There is a lack of cohesiveness with this team that is difficult to pinpoint. Clearly they are unable to score runs when needed, just sporadic hints of brilliance, but unable to string wins together. Jon Lester goes into a severe hissy fit when walking off the mound, things not having gone well for him. Even Ray Charles could read his lips...Jon boy should realize tons of kids watch the game and the camera apparently loves to show these little fits...like other players when they don't perform well.
I'm really getting bummed with the whole deal, the rah, rah is quickly fading. The spending of 3 hours a night watching this inept performance is beginning to take my happy face. I have DVR'd several "Universe" and "Through the Wormhole" with Morgan Freeman programs...time for me to watch these I think...among others.
Fortunately, I am leaving in the AM to the Gulf Coast and my favorite casino, the Beau Rivage. Perhaps 3 days of blackjack, craps (the obligatory slot machine with the wife) and some good seafood will brighten my outlook. I will be unable to watch any Red Sox games till Friday.
Pitboss is hereby designated as the pitbull in my absence.

A rather painful loss...the Rays love to gloat.
He needs to take a couple of weeks on the DL and get better not injure it more by trying to play.
QWe don't need to lose him for the whole season because of his hard head.

Ofcourse I want him to get healthy, Im not saying for him to rush back.. I think they are targeting Mondays off day to make a decision on it.
What are they going to do with all that pitching.
Maybe a 6 man rotation.
I think he may be gone at some point. Anyone heard anything?
Something's gotta give at 3rd, with Middlebrooks looking so good.
They sure don.t need another AAA play to stock up on that is going nowhere.
It would be better to just keep him for the year.
We have plenty of outfielders, pitchers, and catchers at this point and if Pedroia is ok we are set with infielders also.
Why rock the boat if it is not necessary at this point unless someone makes an offer that cant be refused.

stop right there...no organization ever has "plenty of pitchers"
More pitchers would be fine if they didn't suck (like Beckett)
