first base coach should have a stun gun: anyone that doesn't give his all running to first (like Pedrioa does, like Jeter does, like Pete Rose used to do) gets it in the neck before they get back to the dugout!

Even slow as molasses guys like Gonzalez and Ortiz can try their best to get to first quicker.

I don't care if they win twenty in a row. The prima donnas and other lazy, not-trying-their-hardest players need to go. >>

    I agree.

Wake me up if/when they get to .500............image

Is this team fired up? Or is this just more proof that they're just the "best of the rest"?

It was good to see Lester go the distance, but the Mariners offense was bad enough that I couldn't help but think a better team would have been scoring when the Mariners were failing.

Tomorrow afternoon we get to see how well Beckett's golf, I mean fastball is doing.

Ok, big sigh of relief...I'm back!! Who missed me...who? who? Nobody?

Trip was excellent, nothing like a free plane ride and free rooms with food to boot. Didn't win but had a great time. Weirdest thing that happened was when I passed through security about 5 hours ago, the TSA guy actually had me hold me arm out so he could look under my watch !! Crazy!!

    Sox on a roll...so far.
  • pitbosspitboss Posts: 8,643 ✭✭✭
    We all missed you!

A free ride and free rooms is great and a good time is all the better.

You will almost never come away from a casino a winner though.

I speak from experience having worked my last 15 years as a pitboss here in Albuquerque before retiring.

A bit of a TSA follow-up...my wife and another young lady were body searched and had their hands swabbed for whatever...drug residue I guess. This happened to my wife departing Atlanta and leaving Gulfport, MS.

Had to do the stand in the x-ray thingy and hands held over my head. Wow, guy called me aside in Atlanta and wanted to check my right pants pocket...MAJOR DISCOVERY !!! A total of 4 starlight mints...nothing gets passed these super-sleuths. I gave one to the TSA guy...put it right in his blue gloved hand.

As for winning or losing in a casino...many people have not a remote clue about how to play. You see this a lot on a $5-$10 blackjack table, where players don't even follow basic strategy. Standing on 14,15 or 16 into the dealer's ten card, or not doubling down or splitting to increase the chances of their win rate. I love the people that pop in and out at $20 a whack...unfortunately mid-shoe entry is allowed where I played, which is annoying to say the least, especially when the shoe appears to be running well and in come 2-3 players and upset the apple cart, not even having the courtesy to ask the other players if they mind if they join in.

When you move up a bit to a $25 table the level of expertise improves substantially as the stakes are clearly higher. Cannot tell you how many people I saw playing penny slots...I'd rather be cutting Perkdog's lawn than do that!! I do admit to playing slots, but it's more of a sharing time with my wife...we play a $1 triple diamond slot, and allow for a loss limit so we don't go overboard.

Cigar smoke is another issue, which I avoid like a dental appointment.

The pool was AWZUM, with pristine scenery imageimage
  • pitbosspitboss Posts: 8,643 ✭✭✭
Most casino's encourage people to jump in on a blackjack table even on the higher limit action.

    It is to their advantage.

The penny slots make more money for the casino than the other denominations because people feel they are able to afford pennies but

    cant afford dollars.

No matter which your choice is, they will get you if you play long enough.

My wife went yesterday and lost $200 in 3 hours but had fun doing it.

I stayed home and watched the Red Sox.

She was aggravated when she came home and I was happy.

Al if you saw my lawn you might not prefer that LOL

I have ZERO problem with any Airline security doing searches of any kind, unfortunately in this day an age its not only guys with turbins on that are threats.

As for casino play I never play Blackjack because Im not that knowledgable of the game and dont even like it, I go to Foxwoods twice a year and enjoy the Food and partying more than anything, I bring 1K with me and am a high risk high reward player, I will try Roulette with a hundred and then the $25 Dollar slots, last time I went I won over $2500, I also will use $500 on the 100 Dollar slots, Win or lose its worth the gamble for me. I Know I have a 100K Winner in me I just got to hit it image

Hey Paul...must be that salt air working on your grass. image

I know a guy who is moving from Maine to Florida in the next few weeks. I kinda bust on him about how he'll miss all the snow, freezing rain, snowplow pushing a wall of snow at the end of his driveway that turns to rock...blah, blah. He told me his last "official act" is gonna be to stop his car at his neighbor's driveway and literally throw his snow shovel onto the guy's front lawn. His final act of defiance towards Mother Nature.

Ah, the joy of not shoveling snow!!! image

no team has a better record in their last ten games (LAD tied). Odd, I am not excited about this team despite this minor run of success.

Nice hustle play today by Beckett to get over to first after Ortiz made a great play. Too bad the hustle started way too late. Takes time to lick the chicken grease off one's fingers prior to heading over to cover the bag, I guess. Not a Beckett fan.

    Buchholz drives me craqzy.

When he loaded the bases I just could not watch him pitch any more.

He is afraid to pitch with men on base.

Valentine doesn't have much faith in him either. Thanks for getting him out of there so I could go out to the living room to finish watching the game.

    .500 Ball! image
  • MCMLVToppsMCMLVTopps Posts: 4,840 ✭✭✭✭✭
Middlebrooks is smokin'...I wonder what Youkilis is thinking? And, where does he play when he returns? I doubt Valentine can afford to platoon the two at third.

Aviles is on fire as well. Continue to like Aceves...could be Bard goes back to closing with Aceves as the setup...just gotta fill a hole with a starter. Maybe Dicek will be the ticket.

I am well prepared to eat my words and look forward to the opportunity...maybe they're turning a corner.

Was Ortiz's homer a shot or what???
  • BarndogBarndog Posts: 20,492 ✭✭✭✭✭
I think Youkilis starts when he returns, maybe even send Middlebrooks back to Pawtucket. Sox have to demonstrate to other teams that Youkilis is worth more than a mid-level prospect.
  • pitbosspitboss Posts: 8,643 ✭✭✭
Keep them both and eat the money for this year.

Let Middlebrooks play at third and fill in with Youk when he is needed where ever he is needed.

He is now not a regular player and they have more waiting in the wings so trading a player for future considerations is not a good thing to do

    at this point.
  • TheVonTheVon Posts: 2,725
They need Youkilis to play so they can show that he's healthy and capable of producing. Ideally they will find time for him at 3B and 1B so they can expand the number of teams that will be interested in him. When he plays 1B, Middlebrooks can play 3B and A-Gon can DH or play RF since he's shown a willingness to do so in interleague games. When Youkilis plays 3B they can try Middlebrooks in the OF now that Cody Ross is out. Somehow, someway, they need to get both guys ABs.
  • MCMLVToppsMCMLVTopps Posts: 4,840 ✭✭✭✭✭
    and A-Gon can DH

And do what with Ortiz, who is on fire?? I agree with getting Youkilis exposure, but I think he's trade bait, Middlebrooks takes over at 3rd.
  • TheVonTheVon Posts: 2,725
Ortiz can take a day off once in a while to keep him fresh. But I've read reports that other Executives are saying they need to see about 3 productive weeks from Youkilis before they'd be willing to take on his contract or give someone up for him. So if the Red Sox want to trade him they will need to play him.
  • pitbosspitboss Posts: 8,643 ✭✭✭
They don't need another mid level player for Youk or the extra cash that he will bring.

Eat his contract for this year and make use of him as a part time player.

He can be a very handy guy to have available on the bench.

They have plenty of others they are paying anyway, what is the difference.

    Do they need Punto?

They need to consider the fans and not worry about the payroll as they sure charge enough for their uncomfortable seats.
  • TheVonTheVon Posts: 2,725
I respectfully disagree that the Red Sox couldn't use another mid-level player, especially if that player happens to be someone that can throw a 93 MPH fastball. The team might be firing on all cylinders but it wasn't that long ago when the bullpen was in tatters. And I think we're fooling ourselves if we think that the bullpen guys we have now or going to continue performing at these recent high levels.

I agree they could get rid of Punto and Youkilis would be a better utility type guy in that regard, but I don't think that's practical. A guy like Youkilis who speaks his mind and has earned the right to be a starter wouldn't take that very well and it would become yet another clubhouse problem for the team to deal with.
  • pitbosspitboss Posts: 8,643 ✭✭✭
Youk may have earned the right to be a starter but when you lose a step or two you give up that right.

I think it is a moot point because Valentine has already said he could do nicely without Youk in his lineup by trashing him early on.
  • BarndogBarndog Posts: 20,492 ✭✭✭✭✭
tonight's lineup has Youkilis at first, Middlebrooks at third, and Gonzalez in Right. That will have to change when the team gets to Fenway. I can't see Gonzalez doing well in RF in Fenway.
  • TheVonTheVon Posts: 2,725
I'd move him to LF in Fenway or have him go back to 1st in Fenway. If Manny Ramirez can play LF in Fenway, then I think A-Gon could do it with his eyes closed.

I was thinking that earlier in the day while listening to some talk radio. No way he can motor around quick enough in RF to prevent doubles from becoming triples or inside the park homers. And his throwing arm is, let's say, "not in the vicinity of Dwight Evans" to be kind.

Oh my Lord - Texas learned their lesson putting AGon in RF, and stopped the experiment after 1 game. Four chances, one error, and damn lucky it was only 1.

Looks bad so far, but long way to go.

If they get some guys back healthy, they have a shot.

Tough division this year, wouldn't be surprised if both wild cards come out of the AL east.
