He is supposed to be in some golf cards sets later this year with Upper Deck, sadly there is not much out there right now with Ernie Els that are sanctioned cards. Can't wait for this product.
Also, Some of you might be wondering about the Open Championship contest that I had posted in a different thread.
Thanks for all of the entires! I had a total of 17 entries into the contest! Had to go to a number of tiebreakers in some categories, Hence all of the different questions.

Dave Johnson- Big Red Country-Nebraska Collector of Vintage Golf cards! Let me know what you might have.
Sorry for the delay in posting. Golf tournaments, moving into an apartment while our house gets built and jr’s sports activities, and a family vacation have made me pretty busy lately.
But, you don’t care about any of those things…You just want to see some Marsuma golfers
This set was put out in 1914. It features 50 cards (as is the case with many of the early golf issues) in the smaller cigarette size of card we are all familiar with. The set is known for centering issues. Stains on the reverse of cards, and most importantly it has a greyish, brownish, green border color (it is fairly unique color to be sure) that is VERY prone to chipping and any marks showing up at all.
It reminds me in many ways of the T205 set gold borders for that reason.
PSA is very tough on these. I have a number of PSA 5-6 range cards in my collection that look a lot nicer. This is a set that has a lot of value, but not huge value. There are no names of golfers on the front, only on the back with a small write up. The big name is obviously Harry Vardon. Most other notables are golfers of the day, Braid, Taylor etc, but this does have an appearance of Walter Travis, an icon of early American golf and his only cards that I am aware of.
I have only owned one complete set over the years and it was un-graded and pretty nice. I still regret that I did not grade that set myself as I think most cards were in the 5-6 range. It is a set I have been working on card by card, but with selling my collection, I do not have a complete set together and likely will not now that I am selling everything off.
For starters here are a couple of cards from this great , and elusive , and RARE set.
#2 Harry Vardon – Featured in many cards in the set, I don’t have card #1 but here is #2.
#5 James Braid.
A classic pose of the classic golfer
Dave Johnson- Big Red Country-Nebraska Collector of Vintage Golf cards! Let me know what you might have.
July 26th - More 1914 Marsuma Golfers - A James Braid - fest!
If you are a James Braid Fan, it is a good day for you!
#6 James Braid - Love that wool coat. Must have been a cold day in Scotland!. Notice the extended take away. Even after all of these years, you can still learn some nice golf pointers by looking at golf cards nearly 100 years old.
#7 James Braid
A continuation of the swing of card #6, here Braid has lifted the left heel off the round (reminds me a bit of Jack Nicklaus's move) and you can see the torque being generated in the hickory shaft and can detect it bending under the stress of the speed of the swing.
Dave Johnson- Big Red Country-Nebraska Collector of Vintage Golf cards! Let me know what you might have.
July 27th - More cards of the sweet swing of James Braid
Card #8 James Braid
Here you see Braid coming into the imact position. Note the sawying of the stance which was common place during the hickory era, still the left knee is flexed and generating power.
#10 James Braid
Here Braid has stood back up through impact and his right had has rotated over his left with the extended follow through.
Just realized I am really sounding like a golf instructor in this marsuma part of the article!

I have decided I will try and post when I can. With selling old house, moving, building new house, school and practices starting for the kids, my birthday! and other things going on, I simply am not on here every day.
Oh...and Husker Football tailgating is just around the corner.
So, with all that said...here is a couple more cards for August 14th.
Two Different J.H. Taylor cards...and yes they are different - #25 and #26
Dave Johnson- Big Red Country-Nebraska Collector of Vintage Golf cards! Let me know what you might have.
I unfortunately have been very bad at not doing this daily, but work, building the new house, moving, and kids activities have kept me away more than I would like to admit!
Here are 4 scans for Labor Day weekend to showcase some more of these great cards from the 1914 Marsuma Golfers Set
Card #30 J.H. Taylor
Card #31 James Braid
Card #32 James Braid
Card #33 James Braid

I'm anxiously awaiting for the Churchman cards. One question on the marsuma set. What is the little grid that a lot of the golfers are playing off of? Is that some sort of old teebox?
Obviously this has become a hit and miss thread. My apologies but I will post when I have time.
First to answer the question posed about the "GRID" in the last card and also some others, not sure what this is for sure. I have seen it on some vintage cards of the day. Some thoughts are the following:
1) maybe some sort of "winter mat" hitting surface
2) Might be a grid to show placement of feet relative to the relationship of the club postion at the start if the swing, or where a player is positioning the golf ball in his stance to hit different types of shots.
If anyone else has ideas, post them here in the thread!
NOW on to more Marsumas
Card #34 - Harry Vardon.
You can tell he is lining up for a major reverse C swing with this type of weight shift.
Card #35 Harry Vardon - nice post impact follow through on this card shot
Card #37 - C Mayo - Or as I like to call him Captain Miracle Whip. Looks like he is hitting that long running approach chip which is imperative on links style courses.
Card # 38 W. J. Travis - He was likely the most successful early american golfer in terms of amateurism. He won the US Amatuer on three occasions and added a British Am for good measure- he was the first american to ever win this coveted amatuer event.

Just got through reading The Greatest Game Ever Played. Between that book and this thread I have a hankerin' to start collecting golf now. Curse you Golfcollector!!!! I don't have the money to start yet another collection!
Chris My small collection Want List: '61 Topps Roy Campanella in PSA 5-7 Cardinal T206 cards Adam Wainwright GU Jersey
September 21st, - Walter Hagen Rogers Peet - Rarely seen!
ok, so who stole this one?
I emailed the seller about just selling me the Hagen card, and then he sets up a separate auction and does not even let me know (he originally had all of the four cards in one auction) guess I should have just used the buy it now for all 4..
Loss for him...I would have paid more than the $450 buy it now but I really did not want to go the 1200 to buy all four cards in the original listing.
This is a SUPER tough card to locate in any grade!!

#12 James Braid - a nice even balanced follow through. Really a nice swing for the era this depicts!

Finally get out of the James Braid swing sequence today.
Ted Ray #14 - Ray was known as one of the longer hitters of his day, look at the home run cut in this card photo!
George Duncan # 16
What a silky smooth follow through. This photo is one of my favorite cards in this entire issue.
Collector of Vintage Golf cards! Let me know what you might have.
Sorry for the sporatic posting..I am moving out of my house that we just sold..so free time (and olympics) is keeping me off of the computer.
I realized I missed Card #15 of Geroge Duncan Last post so here it is. Talk about swing extension!
Card #17 J.H. Taylor. Looks a bit like my buddy Aaron, minus the wool clothes...same squat move through impact.
Card #18 J.H. Taylor
Nice tall follow through though!
Collector of Vintage Golf cards! Let me know what you might have.
So busy moving out of the old house and into the temporary apartment that I almost forgot the PGA Championship had started.
