    Day 42- More Goodwin Vardons

Will run the rest of my Goodwin Champions Vardon cards I am adding to the Vardon Master set. With all of these variations you get to see the different types of cards in the set

Here is the Mini Version, as I had the regular version the other day

    imageimage

There is also the Black Mini version that has a Lady Luck advertising back

    imageimage

A little tougher is the silver foil version. There are only 88 of these reportedly made of each card in the base set, but these are not numbered. THe back on these cards is also very white in color.

    imageimage

Lastly the hand numbered Black Magician Mini - There are Black Foil cards and are hand numbered to just 9 made of each of the base cards in the set

    Day 43 - Phil Wins 40th Tourney.

No cards today, I think it is worth discussing Tiger and Phil playing together today.

This is good for golf cards. the PGA tour needs these guys to be playing well. It has been a LONG time since both were in contention in the final round of a tournament....too bad it does not happen more often.

I figured one of them would go deep today, but I did not plan on it being Mickelson.

I have noticed some of his cards sold with buy it nows on eBay as the afternoon went on,I am sure a LOT more will be listed later tonight.

    Comments????

    Back to cards tomorrow.

    Day 44 - A Ruby of a Jones!

In 2001 Upper Deck released the first golf cards that had been widely distributed since the 1982 Donruss Set. They opened with a set of 2001 Upper Deck Golf.

The followed this offering with a very anticipated Sp Authentic offering that featured numbered Rookie cards, autographed rookies of Tiger Woods, Sergio Garcia, David Tomas, Reteif Goosen, Jesper Parnevik and David Duvall all numbered to just 900 made.

Before they released the actual SP authentic set, you could purchase jumbo type packs that had preview cards for the SP authentic set in them. Some were even numbered.

Here is one of those SP authentic preview cards, from 2001, featuing Bobby Jones. It is the red version numbered to just 50 made.

Day 45- How bout a Gem for Valentines Day?

Another modern Bobby Jones card, this one from 2001 SP Authentic. You will notice that it has the same pose as the Authentic Preview card listed in yesterdays post.

While it is a modern card, this is still a Jones in PSA 10. This gold version is numbered to just 250 made and it is one of my favorite "modern" cards of Jones

Day 47 - 1927 Churchman Famous golfers Series of 12.

Big80s just missed it...I instead have scanned up the large size series of 12 cards.

The first and second series are difficult to locate. It has been my experience while the first series sells for more - mainly as it has Hagen, Jones and Vardon, the second series (which is also listed as 1928 Churchman large, but I just call it the Famous Golfers Second Series of 12 - Has just a Tom Morris as a big hitter.

It seems over the years that the 2nd series is much tougher to find, but neither series is exactly plentiful. The cards are popular and expensive. A raw Hagen just sold on ebay recently for around $550.

I bought most of these cards at one time and only changed one or two. A great story on my Bobby Jones card, but I will leave that one for later.

Today we will feature the first two cards in the series. I like the Large size cards as you can see much of the background detail in the cards much better than in the small size version.

#1 - John Ball - My two end cards (1 and 12) are a bit lower grade and that as with a lot of vintage sets regardless of subject or sport tends to be the norm, as people who collected them kept them in numerical order, so these are the two cards that get beat up the most. Ball was WELL past his playing days as mentioned on the back of the card -

"one of the greatest of amateur golfers the game has ever know, was born at Hoylake in 1863, it was truly said of him that he never came out in the world without crossing the golf links, for his home stood on the edge of teh seventeeth hole, and there was a short path across the links which the lad had to use to go to school in Hoylake Village. John Ball has won the Amateur Championship teice oftener than any other man, his eight successes being in 1886, 1890,1892,1894,1899,1907,1910 and 1912. He was runner up in 1887 and 1895. he was the first amateur who won the Open Championship which he did in 1890; he also won the Irish Amateur Championship in 1893,1894,1899, and the Royal St George's Cup in 1888. He captained England vs. Scotlan in every internatinoal match from 1902 - 1911

    image

#3 - George Duncan - is one of the gastet of golf players. he makes up his mind how to play the shot as he walks up to the ball and wastes no time in putting believing that if you study the putt too long you do not do yourself justice. he has many novel theories in golf and is most sparkling and delightful player to follow. He was born at Methlick a village in aberdeenshire in 1883, and played for Scotland vs. England from 1906-1913; won the Professional Golfers Assocation tournamant in 1913 the Open Championship the first year after the war, 1920, and the Gleaneagles tournament in 1920 and 1924. In 1908 parterned by Mayo, defeated Edward Ray and Tom Vardon in a seventy-two hole match for 200 GBP. and in 1909 also partnered by May was beaten by Braid and Taylor in a seventy -two hole match for 200 GBP. He is professional at Enthworth GOlf Club, Virginia Water, Surrey.

Got to love those write ups. I will provide the back of the card of this entire set so you can enjoy some vintage writing on golf cards.

Day 48 - 1927 Churchman Famous Golfers Large Series of 12 Part II

#2 James Braid - Just realized I goofed yesterday and put out #3 George Duncan so instead I will do card # 2- and #4 today. Since no one sent me a note, I am assuming no one is reading this post!

Has won the Open golf Cahampionship upon five occassions 1901-1905-1906-1909 and 1910 these successes being scored in the remarkably short space of nine years. he was born on 6th February 1870 at Earlsferry a little village on the coast of the Firth of Forth and he started work as a joiner. Soon after reaching London to work in a club making establishmnet he turned professional. Possessed of great height and strength, Brad, and the zeneith of fame could hit the ball a prodigious distance and when he won his championship at Prestwick in 1908 he played a remarkable chost from a thick clump of gorse, digging the ball out of teh gorse with such effect that he played it on the green and the clump of gorse with it. he is now largely engaged in designing golf courses.

    image

    #4 Walter Hagen

the greatest professional golfer America has produced. Has dominated golf in the United States during the post-war period. he was born in 1892 , won the American Open Championship in 1914 and won the first championship played in America after the war in 1919. He visited Great Britain for the first time in 1920 and played in the Open Championship at Deal, but did not do so well. He tried again in 1921 at St Andrews and won the championship in 1922 at Sandwich. Finished second at Troon in 1923 and again won the championship in 1924. His record of two championships and once runner up in three years has no parrallel in modern golf. he is the idol of the American Golfing Public. he captained the American professional team vs great Britain in 1926 and 1927. he defeated Abe Mitchell in a match over 72 holes for the largest stake that has ever depended upon a single game, namely 1000 GBP.

Day 49- Churchman Famous Golfers Large Series of 12 part III

Actually Tom Morris is not in this set...he is in the 2nd series of Famous golfers...but I digress..

Today we have card #5 Alex Herd - the famous Scottish professional grips his clubs in what may be termed the old-fashioned way, the palm grip and no overlapping. He takes the extraordinary number of waggles before he hits the ball. He takes the club well back and in the illustration of the iron shot it will be noted how his hands turn over at the moment of impact. Herd who was born at St Andrews in 1868 has had an unexampled career in first class professioal golf. He was regarded as the greates professional in the early ninties and is still able to take his place in the very front rank of the game. Herd played for Scotland vs England continuously from 1903-1913, won the Open Championship in 1902, and was second on four occasions. he also won the Professional golfers Association Tournamanet in 1906 and again in 1926.

    image

#6 Ernest Holderness - Sir Wernest William Elsmie Holderness Bart, was bor at Lahore India on 13th march 18900 and learned his golf in this country, cheifly at Royal Dornoch and Walton Heath. He played for Oxford University in 1910-11-12 for Great Britain vs America in 1921,23,26 and for England vs Scotland in 1922,23,24,25 and 26. He won the Amatuer Championship at Prestwick in 1922 and at St Andrews in 1924. he is in the Home Office and can only get his golf at Week-ends and his government duties prevent him attending many of the important championships and tournaments. A leanly built player, he can hit the ball an enormous distance with wood and iron clubs. He is a member of Walton Heath, Rye, Littlestone, Royal Dornach and many other Golf Clubs.

  • Sorry guys I keep stuffing up the functionality on this web site - it bugs me that you dont seem to be able to edit - misposts like the one above.

Dave - I had spotted the error with card 3 - but hey whats the point in pointing out every little error.

I note that one of the players above used to be a member at Royal Dornoch - lucky enough to have played a few rounds there - what a PLACE!!! - golf at the edge of the world.

I look forward to you doing the backs of Championship GOlf courses - reading how much you could play a round of golf for at some of the course in the 30's is priceless - 7s 6' - means seven shillings and sixpence - about 37 1/2 pence - ie less than a dollar!!!!! - My dream was to have played all the championship courses - but sadly I have not managed that - It is pretty tricky to get on Muirfield.

    Really enjoying the thread.

Day 50- Churchman Famous Golfers Large Series of 12 part IV

#7 Bobby Jones - A good story about the Jones in my collection. I used to have this card in PSA 7, I traded it and in return got this PSA 6 and an US Caramel PSA 4 Bobby Jones. That deal looks better all the time for me, and the person that traded me still regrets it...(sorry *(&)%&%) - name withhelp to protect the innocent.

    With that said....

Robert Tyre Jones - the wonder player of the golfing world has the easiest swing of any golfer in the front rank of the game. When a little boy, Jones played for hours on a miiature golf links near his home in Atlanta, and he then developed a perfectly natural swing, and now even in moments of great strain in championship events he never presses. For all his shots he stands with his feet very close and takes a full swing for all clubs from his driver to his mashie. he is the idol of the American crown, and when he was in Great Britain, he geniality and unassuming manner made him very popular. He has represented the United States against Great Brittain in 1921,22,24,25,26 and 1927. His aggregate score in 1927 being a recrod. he was the first amatuer to win the title of champion golfer of the world since 1897, and the first to secure the British tible twice in succession.

    image

    #8 Abe Mitchell

is the greates professional who has not yet won the Open Championship. Born at East Grinstead in 1877, he started work as a gardener. he played for a number of years and an amatuer and represented England against Scotland in 1910, 11,12.. Mitches wsa in the final of the Amatuer Championship at Westward Ho! in 1912 and after holding an apparently winning lead was defeated at the thirty-eight hole by Mr John Ball and turned professional in 1913. In 1925 he beat James Barnes over thirty-six holes by seven and six and Compston in a seventy -two holes match bo 400 GBP by nine and eight. he challenged the world in 1926 for a seventy two hole match for 500 GBP a side. Hagen accpected and beat Mitchell by two and one. Mitchell has made extensive tours in MAerican, 1921,22,24, and was chosen to captain the British side against America (June 1927) but had to resign owing to illness.

Day 51- Churchman Famous Golfers Large Series of 12 part V

Today we look at cards 9 and 10 in this 12 card issue.

#9 Edward Ray - Open Champion in 1912 and winner of the Amiercan Open Championship 1920. He tied for the American Championship in 1913 when he was touring the states with Vardon but on the replay was defeated by Ouimet, an American amateur. Captain of the British Professional team against America in 1927. He was born in Jersey 28th March, 1877 and played for England against Scotland in every professional international match from 1903 to 1913., when the match was abandonded. Won the Leeds cup in 1910,11,19. Ray is of giant stature, and a marvellous feature of his play is the delicacy of his touch in strokes in vicinity of the greens. His first professional engagement was at Churston; afterwards, he was at Ganton, and for some years he ahs been professional at Oshey. he has been champion of Hertfordshire in 1921,22,23, 24

    image

#10 John Henry Taylor - the wonderful veteran of English golf, who won his first Open Championship at Sandwich in 1894, and in 1926 finished second British professional has an unusually open stance for his drive. His swing is short and very crisp, his power being obtained from the steel-like clip of the wrist. Taylor, who has won fie Open Championships, one less than Vardon and equal to the number won by Braid, has been second in the championship oftener than any other man. he tied with Vardon in 1896, losing on the replay, and was secondin in 1904,1905,1906 and 1914. he was born at Northam, new Westward Ho in 1871

    Matt,

good to see you checking in here!

I wouldn’t say the vintage golf card thread is totally gone, I just decided that I would do something each day this year and dedicate it to golf cards.

The advantage of posting it here, on a separate post and in the main sports message board is a number of new people have come across it. Big80s for one makes a lot of comments. Ian, who has been on Net 54 in the past on their boards found it here as well, I have also have a couple people send me emails that are NOT members of this board but do read the posts and have gotten in touch with me. Two of the folks are even located overseas…so that is pretty cool.

Anyway…appreciate the comments, I also see you might be using the golf BST thread that I started up on the BST board as well. I am sure that might heat up a bit when the new golf products come out this year.

Day 52- Last Day of Churchman Famous Golfers Large First Series of 12 -

I wrap this one up today...it is such a great yet small set.

#11- Harry Vardon - is the master-stylist in golf, and the model upon whom most golfers seek to perfect their style. When in his prime, Vardon could play his brassie from difficult lies with such precision that time and again he could place the ball right on the hole. Vardon, who has won the Open Golf Championship oftener than any other man, is a native of Jersey. he was originally a gardener but his younger brother Tom having turned professional, Harry followed and after being professional at Ripon and Bury, his services were secured by the Ganton Club in Yorkshire and while there, Vardon won the first of his six Open Champsionships. it was at Ganton he played the second half of the great match against Willie Park, the last of the old line of Scottish professional match fighters. Vardon won by eleven and 10.

    image

#12 Roger Wethered won the Amatuer Championship in 1923 when he was 24 years of age. In 1921 at St Andrews he tied with Jock Hutchison the great Scottish-American Golfer, for the Open Championship. In the thrid round Wethered stood on his ball and he thus incurred a penalty stroke; so that he actually played in one less than Hutchison in the Championship. He lost, however, on the replay. In 1923 he went round St Andrews in 72 the lowest score that has ever won the Medal of the Royal and Ancient Golf Club. Represented Great Britain against America in 1921,1922,1923,1926; and England against Scotland in 1922,1923,1924, 1925 1926 and 1927.

Day 53 - World Golf Championships Giveaway!

Ok, so I am taking a break and figured after the first round I would offer another "giveaway" I have not decided if it will be golf card, or golf related...so....

In order to enter the contest you need to do two things.

    1) tell me who you pick to win the Accenture World Match Play Championship (hint - 1st round was played today, so when a guys is picked there is no chance left to get him.

    2) tell me if you want to have a golf related card OR a golf related Item if you are the contest winner.

I will set up a SEPARATE POST for this to ensure we get at least 32 entrants so there is a guaranteed winner - so PLEASE RESPOND on that separate post.

Good Luck! Back to Cards tomorrow.

Day 54 - 1928 Churchman Famous Golfers Large Series II

These are effectively the same design as the 1927 Churchman Large Golf Series 1 - but these are 12 new and different subject that were produced in 1928.

We will start off like before featuring two each day.

#1 James Barnes - is a native of Cornwall, and he acted as a caddie until he went to America in 1905. he first tried for the British Open Championship in 1920 and finished sixth. he kept on trying each year until 1925, when he won the Chapmionship at Prestwick. he won the American Open Championship in 1921 and the Western Open Championship of America in 1914-1917-1919. He is know as long Jim Barnes for he is six feet two inches in height. He hits the ball a prodigious distance with both wood an iron clubs.

    image

#2 Aubrey Basil Boomer - Boomer was bonr in 1897 at Grouville, Jersey which has been the birth-place of more famous golfers thatn any other centre, not even excluding St Andrews. He has, however, lived so long in France that he is often thought to be a naitve French Golfer. Boomer won the French Open Championship at 24, and he won it again in 1922-26. He has secured the Belgian Championship twice, and the Holland Championship three times. In 1926 he won two 1000 GBP tournaments the "Daily Mail" and the Gleneagles. Day 55 - 1928 Churchman Famous Golfers Large Series II Part 2

#3 Archie Compston - a giant golfer, and the tallest and biggest professional in the game. he was born at Penn, near Wolverhampton, in January 1893, and came to the front in the Gleaneagles tournament of 1922 when he reached the semi-final. he won the Gleaneagles tournament in 1925, and tied for second place in the British Open Championship in 1925. Toured America in 1926. Compston takes an immense amount of pains in training and perfecting himself, and his unusual method is to go out early in the morning with a busket of balls and play shots up to a flag.

    image

#4 George Gadd who was born at Malvern in 1890 sprang into the front line of professional golf in 1922 by winning the Professional Golfers Association 750 GBP (now 1000 GBP) tournmanet and he ascribed his success to the development of his putting. Gadd devoted hours daily to practicing putting until he brought himself as neat perfection as is possible in this elusive section of the game. Wonthe Northern Professional Championship 1924, tied for the Surrey Open Championship 1926, Was chosen to play for the British professionals vs, American Professionals at Worcester USA June 1927 but did not take part in the match.

Day 60 - Golf Major Championships

I write an article weekly for a blog site called the Soap Boxers. I wrote an article this week that I put some thought into, and it includes some golf history as well. I take a break today from scans, but please click the link to read the article, and feel free to leave some comments here.

    Thanks

Why does Golf have just 4 major Championships?

  • I'm not that big a fan of the Players Championship. Even though I have played the course (way overpriced), the 17th has always seemed a little gimmicky to me. BTW, stuck the green with a nine iron and two putted. Now the 18th is a motherf&^%(r!

But who am I to call a par 3 gimmicky, I love the 16th at Pheonix.

If you ever want to play Sawgrass's Stadium course, don't. Drive 45 minutes south and play the King and Bear and the Slammer and Squire. You will save a buck-fifty and play two wonderful courses

Had the same debate as the one in your article many times on the podcast. Actually just had the U.S. Amateur Champion (Kelly Kraft) on Monday. IMHO, the U.S. Amateur is still a major. I consider Nicklaus to have 20 Majors and Tiger to have 17. The simple reason is history. All of the greats won or wanted to win the U.S. Am at one point in their careers. The new Q School proposal is going to dramatically change Amateur golf. Now, facing the prospect of a full season on the NWide Tour no matter what, the US Am Finalists are going to go immediately to Q School and not wait to play the majors on their exemptions as Amateurs. Not when they can only take 7 sponsors exemptions afterward. It's really hard to finish Top 125 in 7 tournaments (especially when they won't be the big paying tournaments - PLAYERS/WGCs).

The PLAYERS will never be a major because Arnold Palmer never won it (or played in it during his prime). His era starting is the benchmark for the modern majors. He made the Open Championship relevant again, made the Masters a national event and won the 60 US Open battling Hogan and Nicklaus (as an Am). Not just the Arnie factor but you simply can't retroactively say that Mark Hayes and Jodie Mudd are major winners. They are not. If they didn't feel "major" pressure when they won it, it wasn't a major and can't be considered as such in the future. With the 4 Pro Majors now, everyone that won them knew it was a huge tournament when they did. Even the '34 Masters was the Bobby Jones' (by far the most respected and famous golfer ever) Invitational. That meant a lot to guys then. Plus, Horton Smith won his 2nd AFTER Sarazen's Double Eagle in '35 and his win in '34 is the only questionable one.

    Vito,

I like your points, my major point of contention is I personally think the Western Open back up until a certain date 1940's???? whould be considered a major as it was considered a major type of tournament in that era.

Day 61 - Showing up some recent ebay pickups!

Over the next few days I am going to show some ebay pickups that I have had recently. Some are just back from the graders...Others are some cards I have had on here previously but now are graded.

I will start with this one, I am working on a Tour Threads set from 2001 Upper Deck. Found something nicer than the normal white shirt tiger...and the PSA Set registry shows a red shirt version...but...

The "stripe" versions are a lot tougher to locate. I have not seen many EVER, and this one had a cheap buy it now, so I snatched it....Thank you graders..it is an awesome addition to my collection for a more recent card and the first "jersey" card of Eldrick.

Day 62 - More Cards just back from PSA!

Here are a couple of other cards from earlier posts that I got back from PSA.

The Scottish gems a little dissapointed with as I thought it would grade a bit better.

The Hagen is the only one ever graded, and I could tell it had some very faint back damage, so I was hoping for a PSA 3 at BEST, so I am happy with a 2, but it sure looks a LOT nicer than the technical grade.

Day 64 - Would someone make some REAL cards of Rory McIlroy?

No scans today but a late night vent.

I am sooooooo tired of doing ebay searches for golf cards to constantly find these "made on the printer in my basement" type of cards numered to 10 or 25 or whatever of players like Rory McIlroy. Even sadder is the unsuspecting people that actually spend big money on these thinking they are something they are not...

Here is hoping either Leaf or Upper Deck have an actual licensed card of him this year.

    Day 65 - 1939 Players Golf

This is one of the easier sets to put together, as it is one of the latter of all cigarette issues and the cards are plentiful. There are a couple of versions, one has writing on the cards that state Imperial Tobacco Company, and others do not. I do not know enough about this series to know if one is drastically tougher than the other as other than the ITC clause, the cards are identical.

This is just a 25 card set. It features golfers of the day, showing bright clothing against a white background. The cards show a variety of golf tips for a variety of different type of golf shots..... a teaching set if you will.

#1 James Adams - The Drive - my examples is a little rougher than the rest in my set which is the case with many issues, first and last cards always seem to be tougher.

    image

#2 Percy Alliss - No.1 Iron Shot - I often wear Plus Fours....or Knickers in golf outings...of course I don't have this savvy purple combination! And I really cannot hit a 1-Iron!

    image

#3 A.G. Beck - No. #4 Iron Shot. Man, more purple or plum or whatever color it is, trust me the scans do not do the brightness of these cards justice!

    image

#4 Aubrey Boomer - Mashie Shot - Man I love that Blue sweater and tie look...I use it often with my knickers actually....One of my favorite looking cards in the set.

    image

#5 W.J. Branch - long chip shot. For you golfers who read this...check out how much he is choked up on the leather grip in hitting this shot.

Day 66- 1939 Players Golf Part II

#6 Burton - sorry folks...realized my Burton scan is messed up on photobucket, so skipping this one

#7 - J.J. Busson - Explosion shot from bunker - Not a big fan of the navy slacks white sweater look, but those brown and white wing tips cleats are freaking awesome.

    image

#8 - Archie Compston - Drive - Looks like Compston is in some sort of 1939 era rain gear with that baggy yellowish slicker jacket with huge pockets.

    image

#9 - Henry Cotton - Drive - Classic Cotton Pose in the follow through. What a pretty finish to a golf swing.

    image

#10 - W.J. Cox - Putting. Another card with those fabulous wing tip golf shoes...I need to get me a pair of those!
