I am off to the Masters for a Monday Practice round, so will try to keep this going while on the road, but if I am off the grid for a few days...don't despair!
Dave Johnson- Big Red Country-Nebraska Collector of Vintage Golf cards! Let me know what you might have.
The Tournament officially starts tomorrow. I had the opportunity to join other patrons on Monday in the July-like weather at Augusta.
Unfortunately due to the warm weather all spring, most all of the blooming plant life has expired their colorful blossoms. You will see a lot of green on TV this year, but not a lot of bright colored azaleas.
I will add a few pictures from the tournament here over the next few days, but the main question is…..
Who do you pick to win it all this year?
Dave Johnson- Big Red Country-Nebraska Collector of Vintage Golf cards! Let me know what you might have.
Anyone who loves the Masters should checkout the podcast I did with Ryan Ballengee from Golf Channel yesterday (it's in my footer). Lots of interesting stuff.
Here over the next few days I will post a few pics of the practice round that my wife an I attended. Here are some photos of the entrance, the main gate complete with full security (much like at an airport) the merchandise building (aka calm before the storm) and a few early morning pics.
Can anyone name each of the golfers in this photo from #1 green about 8:08 on Monday?
Dave Johnson- Big Red Country-Nebraska Collector of Vintage Golf cards! Let me know what you might have.
Wow cool photos. Look forward to seeing more. So they actually let you take pictures? I went to the PGA Championship at Whistling Straights in 2009 and no cameras or phones were allowed.
Wanted to take a minute to say THANKS to GOLFCOLLECTOR for a cool sampling of golf cards that he sent my way. I won his match play tournament contest a few weeks ago and was excited to see a nice assortment of cards come my way including these:
The reason for my victory, Hunter Mahan and a cool memorabilia card to boot
<< <i>Can anyone name each of the golfers in this photo from #1 green about 8:08 on Monday? >>
Far left leaning on his putter is Andy North In yellow is Tom Watson The guy with the towel is Martin Kaymer And the chipper on the far right is Randal Lewis (Mid Am champ)
Feel free to confirm my "suspicions" of who that foursome is
well you must have looked it up somewhere as you have all of the names, however, Lewis is right over the shoulder of North's caddy, the dude on the right is raking a bunker!
Dave Johnson- Big Red Country-Nebraska Collector of Vintage Golf cards! Let me know what you might have.
Thanks bro I knew where Randal was-- the term "chipper" refers to an excitable player,,,, which Randal should be in the company of Tom Watson,,,,, big difference playing with a multi-major winner,,,,, and I didn't need to look up the foursome it was all over the golf news who Randal would be playing his first practice round on Monday with,,,,,
Quick quiz-- just one Palm Tree on that property-- since you walked it seems you "should" have seen it-- where is it located ?? My little quiz for you lol ,,,,, anyone trying to look up that answer will discover its nowhere on line,,,,
Mickelson looked as though his swing kept getting stuck,,,,,,,, tough at that swing speed to even try flipping your hands over to catch up,,,, I've never like his course management skills but I do have to say he played very few bonehead shots this week and that impressed me more than his turning around a bad start,,,,, he could be threat in the rest of the majors,,,,
The albatross by Oustie got him in front but frankly he didn't have his head in the game after that,,,, he even admitted in interviews it was tough to move on after such a wild stroke of luck,,,, but methinks he'll be back again,,, that kid has game,,,,,, he's mentally there and his course management looks fairly solid,,,,,
How Bubba won is great driving,,,,, his short game was good as always but his driving was great,,, he played the par 5's in 6 under over the weekend,,, that's why he was there at the end he just ate up those scoring holes,,,,
Lee Westwoods lack of short game showed,,, someone needs to show him how to loosen that putting stroke up,,,, looked all weekend like he was trying to stear the putts into the holes,,,,
Freddy,,, well Freddy was his usual self,,, maddeningly just not holding that swing together,,,, think his back just doesn't want to stay still,,,, on 5 looked as though he couldn't follow thru correctly,,, not sure if his back was hurting or what,,,,
Peter Hanson just hadn't been there,,,, I was VERY impressed with his ball striking,,, he gets lots of power very easily,,,, but he looks to have a bit of Colin Montgomery in him,,,, a little too much juice when a little more finesse may have helped him,,,, his distance control looked off,,,, putting was tight,,,, all in all his 1 over was I think the best he could have done,,,,
Kuchar needs to get some fire under him,,,, he's good,,, but I don't yet see that killer instinct,,,, its "ah golly gee" when it should be " time to nail some folks to the cross with some well placed birdies",,,,,,,, not sure if he even is capable of some serious head game as I did not see that killer look a guy like Goosen shows when he's zoned in ( like Kuchar = the Goose is laid back)
No one else had a shot,,,, and where the daylights did Rory go? 77-76 over the weekend?? This kid having nightmares about last year or what?
Yeah, I remember seeing the Palm tree in 2009 when I was there but for the life of me I can't pick it out now....I want to say it is off of 4 or 5, but I am probably wrong. I remember last time thinking...a freaking palm tree at Augusta?
The fact that Mickelson finished two back with two triples on the week.....ouch!
If you have stood down on 10 where Bubba hit that shot from in the playoff....all I can say is un-freaking-believable!
I was going to have a Masters giveaway....but I missed out...so...guess I will have to come up with one here shortly as they seem to be popular
Dave Johnson- Big Red Country-Nebraska Collector of Vintage Golf cards! Let me know what you might have.
Oustie BOMBS it for a little guy, and yes he'll be a factor in the coming majors. Great Masters once again, I'd love to go some year. Nice pics, thanks for posting. They really display the immaculate care put into that course.
I bought just one box of the stuff but have been working to put together a base set (no small feat since it appears about 150 or so of each base card was produced) If anyone knows for sure put it here.
only 48 cards in the basic set, but I will start off with a nice Refractor Auto of Anthony Kim, the National pride cards with the flags are cool!
Dave Johnson- Big Red Country-Nebraska Collector of Vintage Golf cards! Let me know what you might have.
Nice refractor. I've been buying base card lots on eBay of the Metal and a few came in. They're not bad. Remind me of Topps Chrome. I sent about 10 of them off for TTM autos. I prepped them with powder. We'll see how that goes. If you want to trade base cards I will have a few extra.
Day 103- The Rarest of All Bobby Jones Cards - Kraj Zigaretten. Scans included!
First off, thanks to Nick who has graciously saught me out through message board articles like these and has emailed me many times in the past week months. He has some German related golf cards that either I have personally never seen in person, or..did not know even existed at all. I will try to showcase some of these over the next few days.
No better way to start it off than to share this card. It is literally the Holy Grail of Bobby Jones cards. This is the first one I have actually ever seen a photo of from a person who ACTUALLY owns this card.
The Abdulla Jones has got to be one of his more difficult cards. This is the much more difficult Kraj Zigaretten card from 1927. It is essentially a colorized version of the Abdulla card with of course a different back.
Old and new time collectors alike, enjoy the scans...and if ANYONE reading this actually owns this card as well, I would love to see you share your scan of your card example.

Amazing card, Dave. I've never seen one, or even heard of it for that matter.
Day 104 - More rare German golf cards - First of these I have ever seen!
First off Joe, thanks for the kind words, nice comments like yours is what keeps me going on this thread.
Here are some more great scans courtesy of Nick in Germany! 2 Felix Potin golf cards issued around 1921 to 1922. The style is like Ogdens Guinea Gold - but I think WAY COOLER.
I have never seen these cards before, but love em!
Enjoy
Dave Johnson- Big Red Country-Nebraska Collector of Vintage Golf cards! Let me know what you might have.
In case you are looking for more, The Felix Potin are a French issue. The 3rd series you posted are the most difficult to find. A very solid mixed sport issue. Your golf cards are awesome. Keep on posting. Alan Edit: just checked the checklist and those are the only golf cards. Checklist here: http://oddlyquirky.com/trackandfield/cards/c_celebrites.html

Day 105 - More German Cards I have never before seen!
Again, thanks to Nick who loaded me up with some scans! here is a few more great cards from Germany that I have not seen before.
My favorite of these in the Walter Hagen of course!
Here is a nice narrative from Nick on these cards.
All 4 golf cards from series 18 "Tennis & Golf", numbers 7-10, from the margarine company "Eigelb" (firm not mentioned on back). as you can see, number 8 shows Walter Hagen in a superb shot of him taking a swing on board the deck of a ship. The caption on the back reads: "Walter Hagen before setting off for Europe with Helen Mac Keller". Number 9 is also interesting: the back says: "On the golf course of Wannsee the open German golf championships took place: Left - Allis / Right - Torrance
Dave Johnson- Big Red Country-Nebraska Collector of Vintage Golf cards! Let me know what you might have.
Sweet! The Greiling sets are awesome. There are so many variations to that set (both in terms of size and in terms of paper stock) that collecting them is pretty fun. Finding them with the coupons still attached is quite a challenge but definitely something doable.
