<< <i>There is a shill bidder playing games right now DIDDY with feedback of 4535. He bought a lot of the cards a few weeks ago and is jacking up the bid. >>
You would never do something like that, right?
So basically my kid won't be able to go to college, but at least I'll have a set where the three most expensive cards are of a player I despise ~ CDsNuts
Just got back from my meeting with my financial advisor and he was very interested in these wrestling cards and the recent surge in prices.
He read through this thread and thinks that Dpeck100 is a genius for being able to identify an underpriced and relatively tough item to find. He mentioned that the higher Dpeck pays on these cards at this point, the more he will wind up making in the long run because he has acquired so many of them at a cheaper price point. For example, lets say that he has 8 Hogan's that he has paid an average price of $100 per card on, and then buys the next one at $1000, his average cost per card would only be $200 at that point, leaving him with a profit of $800 per card. The interesting thing that he mentioned though was that the lesser known wrestlers will yield a greater return on your money at this time as the cards of the guys like Adrian Adonis, Lou Albano, Bam Bam Bigelow, Dory Funk, Flash Funk, Bob Backlund, Junkyard Dog, Leaping Lanny Poffo, Hillbilly Jim, etc.... will increase in price along with the Hogan, Andre, and Flair cards. As the key cards will increase in price, the commons will go up exponentially more. The same happened with 1952 Topps as the Mantle card rose in price, the commons followed and now cost at least $200 for a common.
The financial analyst said that he was in the same position as Dpeck was in 1985 with everyone laughing at him for buying a stock that others felt was overpriced and had already gone up too soon, too fast. He still went ahead and bought while everyone thought he was crazy, that stock happened to be none other than BRKA, he paid $1800 per share and he said he recently sold some at $120,000 per share. Maybe Dpeck will have the last laugh here. Only time will tell.
Jeff- Those wrestling figures you have were awesome. I had some as a kid. They aren't plastic...they are made of a heavy rubber and very durable. But they were flexible enough that you could twist them around and do wrestling moves with them. You couldn't break them if you tried. Perfect toy for a young kid...
I agree with McAdmas great looking LJN figures. I have on my wall the Jimmy Superfly Snuka, Billy Jack Haynes, and the the White Shirt Hogan. I bought them MOC and busted them for display. I also have the Remco Ric Flair as well.
Waverlee, what is your angle here? Your post seems well tought out and while you may or may not have met with a financial advisor your logic is spot on.
I find it amusing I have been mocked becuase I told people these cards were going to get hot.
If you read my first posts on the Mike Tyson thread you will see I actually started posting becuase I found a thread about the Mike Tyson Panini card and he was referring to me as the guy he got into a bidding war with. I was researching the card and found the post and decided to join and let him know it was a legit auction. I over paid by a mile and was not thrilled with my actions. The reason I bid early is I tap out if it get's to high. That time I waited up until 1:30 and decided I wanted to win. I paid the price and spend $82 on am item that I should have not. Being the quick minded thinker I am I bought out every site I could find to bring my cost basis down to $38 so I was not so far out on the price curve.
As for the Hogan cards, my cost is very low indeed. The thing every one is missing here is I am not selling any. I want these for the long term. These cards have the right recipe for a major long term winner.
I want you to watch the prices of mid card guys, and old main eventer's.
A Dusty Rhodes just sold buy it now for $19.99 plus $2 shipping. This was a $2 card eight months ago. You are spot on with your insite about the relative prices of the set. That is exactly why when I say I have 958 and count every one. Every single card gets more expensive when the top cards make these type moves.
<< <i>As for the Hogan cards, my cost is very low indeed. The thing every one is missing here is I am not selling any. I want these for the long term. These cards have the right recipe for a major long term winner. >>
Dpeck, before everyone starts yelling at you again, I just wanted to ask you to clarify your statement. You've recently mentioned several Hogan cards that you ARE selling. So, you're selling your 85 Topps, but not the 82 All Stars?
Do people still getting into bidding wars? I love a good last second auction with two high snipes. Always good when you are a seller and a couple of "this is my card" snipes fire off late. Bidding wars???
If you care to check out my auction just look for Hulk Hogan and you will find it. I tried to make it a little amusing since they are wrestling cards. It is strong out of the gate which is cool to see.
Went ahead and opened the promo or whatever pack it was. Pulled a poorly named "Keeping it Clean" card. Not aware of any other card of a someone holding their balls with both hands....for whatever that is worth.
Collecting PSA graded Steve Young, Marcus Allen, Bret Saberhagen and 1980s Topps Cards. Raw: Tony Gonzalez (low #'d cards, and especially 1/1's) and Steve Young.

Not sure what you meant here and was just guessing. The card you posted was Buff Bagwell and I thought you were talking about that. Any way that Dusty card is very cool I think.
Dusty was one of my favorites. I only watched NWA on TV and I loved Dusty Rhodes American Dream, American Dream Dusty Rhodes. I was pissed that NWA didn't make good action figures, so I was forced to play with Hulk Hogen figurines. Deep down, I wanted Dusty and some Rock N Roll express tag team figures.
I want you to watch the prices of mid card guys, and old main eventer's.

What in the Big Boss Man is going on here! First it was 965 and now you say you have 958 of the cards. Go count them again and let me know ASAP. It's getting late.
The best pitch to start a hitter off with is always strike one.
<< <i>It is WCW Nitro by Wizard of the Coast and it is refractorish....ohhhh! >>
Is there really a dice game involving wrestlers? Wow.. Those Magic the Gathering folks are a unique bunch... I can't imagine any of those people ALSO liking wrestling. What a tiny niche to go after....
What you just said is why these cards are going up. I am 31 and many in my age range grew watching them and looking at them like real life super heroes. There are so many from all three sets that people look back and say man he was awesome!!
That is why people buy the cards.
They may have been actors, but they were not cheating their fans.
Wrestlers from this era still have a lot of fans just like the older baseball cards you guys collect. These cards are hard to find as I have said and people want to own them.
<< <i>What in the Big Boss Man is going on here! First it was 965 and now you say you have 958 of the cards. Go count them again and let me know ASAP. It's getting late. >>
A little into the start of the thread it was 883.

They likely don't use dice. I would guess it is styled off Magic, where everyone draws from their own deck of cards. This sounds like the Magic card "shatterstorm" which destroys all artifacts.
But more importantly, he is holding his balls with both hands!
Collecting PSA graded Steve Young, Marcus Allen, Bret Saberhagen and 1980s Topps Cards. Raw: Tony Gonzalez (low #'d cards, and especially 1/1's) and Steve Young.

Collecting PSA graded Steve Young, Marcus Allen, Bret Saberhagen and 1980s Topps Cards. Raw: Tony Gonzalez (low #'d cards, and especially 1/1's) and Steve Young.
Okay I had 883 going into the thread. I bought two more set of the 82B which totals 72 cards. I purchased 13 singles over the past two weeks. In the early cards we are discussing I now have 968 cards. That is the exact number.
I just updated my set in the registry to reflect the two new Gem Mint 10's I got. I added Nick Bockwinkel and Terry Funk. I am going to get some of the cards I am missing graded soon and complete the set.
There is a raw 82 hogan on ebay right now up to 600 bucks.. i'm pretty pissed i didn't buy one from wrestling prints for 75 when i had a chance. I wanted the andre card.. but at these priced i don't think i have choice but to put it on ebay. there is only one graded higher than psa 7. I haven't gotten them pack yet from psa. i'll scan it when i get them.
How have I missed such a train wreck thread until this point??
More importantly, what is my circa 1987 match-read poem frisbee from Leaping Lanny Poffo, caught by me in a scrum and later autographed to me, going to get me on eBay?
A suggestion to anyone bidding on this Hogan or any of his other wrestling cards.
Ask if any damage such as creases/wrinkles are on the cards.
These are from him. (My scans not from the listing)
Note that the Brunzell does barely show a crease but the others look good in the scan.
Now the reality.
Brunzell
Buck Zum Hofe
Jay Strongbow
No mention of creases/wrinkles in listing. CONDITON IS TYPICAL FROM CORNER ISSUSE TO SURFACE ISSUE AND CENTERING
I'm not upset with my purchase (well just a tad as the Jay Strongbow was to go with my Jules Strongbow) but I would ask questions before relying on scans.
Barf this is exactly why I have gotten so interested in the high grade examples. They are so hard to find. The Hogan you posted clearly has a lot of damage and it will sell for a decent amount but is not a great card.
Many of these cards have major corner damage even right out of a sealed set.
Having seen a couple of the auctions with sealed sets it's very obvious why they would have damaged corners as they are wrapped pretty tight.
Plus factor in the age and the probability that over the years these weren't handled well (sealed or unsealed) and all these colored borders and I can see why high grade cards could be hard to find.
Myself it doesn't really matter as I just don't search out high grade. Dings and nicks aren't a turn off but creases/wrinkles are kind of a bummer.

I am selling two 1985 Topps Hogan cards. They are as follows. 1985 #1 Hulk Hogan true BGS 9, #16 Hulk Hogan PSA 9 in the same auction.
Dave
1957 Topps 99% 7.40 GPA
Hank Aaron Basic PSA 7-8(75%)
Go check some of the snipe bids and see that every one doubled or trippled a card on the close. Sorry does not work in the way I bid.
I have never paid more then 5% higher then my current bid going into on of these closes as my max is right near my current bid.
It works in markets where cards in are ranges, not when they are moving higher. I told you this a while ago and I am sticking with my point.
