new slabs will include a proprietarily encrypted chip and usb port.
software will read and transmit still encrypted data back to PCGS.
PCGS will only give the software a valid or invalid response back.

I have not paid close attention to this thread, so I am not sure if anyone had a similar idea, but here is my thought on the big one...

Collectors Universe should have a place on its website (or a related website) where collectors can go to the CU site for ALL their coin needs, For example, if a collector is looking for a coin, CU would have all of the ebay listings available on ITS site for collectors to view and then bid on through the CU site (or be linked to ebay through the CU site where CU gets "credit" for its shopper going to ebay to purchase a coin). Perhaps CU could also have major auction companies' auction listings there as well for collectors to view from the CU site, CCE dealers' inventory available to view, etc.,etc., etc. A ONE STOP SHOPPING EXPERIENCE FOR THE COIN COLLECTOR right from the CU website. Along the lines of what bing.com (and others) have been doing in getting shopping traffic to its site as the "heart" of the action and leading those shoppers to the other locations for their purchases.

That is my idea. If this is not "the big one", I still think this would be a great idea for CU to consider.

    1) Maybe there's now a way to return multiple submissions to the owner in one package, instead of one return package per submission form as it is now? (Please excuse me if this has already been guessed)

    2) an expanded 22-digit barcode (not really a guess as it's on the homepage right now to be effective March 25th, but I'll throw it up there).
  • PCGS is closing up shop and we are all on our own!
  • This is on the PCGS site...I hope this isn't the BIG ONE!! Ha. "Effective March 25, 2010, PCGS will begin printing on all coin holder labels an expanded barcode that takes advantage of all 22 digits (up from the current 16 digits). The expanded barcode will allow us to introduce additional information that will provide improvements in identifying and tracking inventory. We'll keep you posted on the additional information as it is developed."
Save $$$ on many purchases to include EBAY and EBay Stores.

They are going to place the description on the sides of the slabs in addition to the front and change the blue box to clear so
you can see what's inside with having to open the box.

  • My guess is for an extra grading fee you would receive an image that would allow PCGS to verify the coin regardless of whether it is still in the original holder or not. Also for the fee (or additional fee) you would receive any previous auction records and provenance.

    I got it, (maybe)
    using computer guided imaging,
    similar to face recognition software,
they will be able to positively identify a coin
    with 100% certaintly.

    and
(I am not so sure of this part)
they will be able to identify if the coin is altered
    after it passes grading.

PCGS has contracted for a proprietary super high density specially formulated plastic molded with tight tolerances.
Now the slabs plus the coins can be weighed for autentication.

Too many to read, so not sure if this was mentioned. But in addition to A, B, C grades being added to each newly graded coin, perhaps PCGS has designed new holders containing a tracking feature that will deactivate if the holder is tampered with, which will enable PCGS to keep better track of how many coins remain in each grade for population purposes.

All current guarantees (except genuiness) will terminate as of a specified date. Coins will have to be resubmitted for re-grading to reactivate the guaranty. Newly graded coins will be in a holder with a new barcode that shows grading date. New guaranties will likewise expire ten years after the grading date and may be renewed through resubmission for re-grading. Resubmitted coins will be entitled to upgrades or downgrades with the guaranty invoked in the case of a downgrade, but only if resubmitted by the deadline. New MS/PR grades will include tiers within a grade, such decimals, high, low, medium etc.

How about this for out of left field? The new slabs will be sealed with helium, so that when slabs get cracked open, we will know by who talks like Donald Duck.

    Inspired by BNB:

New grading solution for coins with FINGERPRINTS:
PCGS will now tap into the FBI database and indicate WHOSE fingerprint that is.
Famous fingerprints are sure to increase the value of some coins.

  • 1. Add a new designation to all coins graded to denote if its high or low end. Add a new service to compete with NCS. Standardize grading for all collectibles that CU grades with a new scale. Announce a new holder to fight China counterfeits. On 'Genuine' coins start listing the coins problem.

there are so many good ideas here, you will be able to start new divisions to CU

whats the status on the reward offered a few years ago for spotting on SAEs? is it still offered and what are the parameters/criteria?

THREE big announcements? "And one of the things took 2 years to develop...one took 6 months...and one took two months."

Okay. New guess. Based on relative gestation periods, I say that PCGS has 3 new babies:

New baby elephant (2 years), new baby panda (6 months) and new puppy (2 months).

    How's that for left field?

If using online submissions, PCGS will accept shipments from the Mint or an auction or wherever under the member's name and a c/o submission number.

This will save people time and shipping money,

    Gotta be:

    1. Increased Insurance, for a fee

    2. PQ designation

    3. New holder

I'm going to guess PCGS will offer full services to collectors:
They're adding conservation, and will actually STORE and provide IMAGES for any PCGS slabbed coins in your collection. You'll never have to handle your coins again. they'll safely hold and even transfer ownership status for you if you sell image

Way too many guesses to search to see if it's been suggested, but here's a thought and a couple of guesses... "First Strike" will become relevant. Something along the lines of Pcgs obtaining large groups of truly "first struck" coins directly from the mint? Additionally, maybe more or even all circulating coins will be added to this "First Strike" program? Pcgs will be the "authorized" dealer of such "First Strike" coins?
  • I got it. PCGS is going to have a post on the Message Boards where members can suggest new services or ideas that they would like to see PCGS offer.

Or, perhaps, PCGS is going to offer to keep coins sent in for grading in a safe storage facility. When you sell the coin, PCGS can act as an escrow agent and receive the payment, forward it on to the seller and ship the coin to the buyer. In addition, PCGS's photo library will make photos of the coin available to the potential buyer who will know that the photos haven't been played with.

PCGS will now issue a report on each coin graded with details on how, or why the coin achieved the grade it was assigned. How's that for a guess?

Anti-tarnish inserts coupled with full, researchable provenance on coins graded by PCGS.

One last guess! Perhaps instead of making a change to the slabs or the slabbing process.... perhaps it involves marketing. Something along the lines of creating a 'liquid' market for the slabs, so that they can be bought and sold easily. Perhaps by PCGS themselves, or by agreement with some other entity.

Although I really think I got it on my first try.....

"Beginning March 29, 2010 Collectors Universe will become the newest Online Marketplace. The innovative new site will be named "eBuy" and will give the popular eBay site a run for their money. All Collectors Universe paid members will be able to list items at no initial cost and will only pay a final value fee equivalent to half what eBay currently charges. All items being auctioned that have Tru-View pictures on file with Collectors Universe will also have direct links to the Tru-View pictures on the listing for no cost. And, best of all.... Collectors Universe will debut their new Online Payment Service named "PayNow" that will charge 25% less than the popular PayPal service and accounts that maintain a balance of over $500 will earn a minimum of 2.5% interest!"

    This is my other thought:

Beginning tomorrow PCGS will report their buyout of several smaller third party grading companies and they will begin grading all coins on a 100 point scale. The new grading system will be possible by the use of a new super computer/scanner that compares the coin's image with known coins. The only coins not utilizing the new system will be mint errors that are so distorted that their image cannot be properly scanned. At first the current grading system will be included on the holder along with the new 100 point scale but it will be dropped after the market becomes accustomed to the new. PCGS will also offer digital images of all coins graded with the new system at a fraction of the cost of the current Tru-View photographs and the new computer/scanner will automatically identify the variety of the coin and the variety will be listed on the holder at no additional cost. The new 100 point grading scale will later become the norm for all third party grading companies and it will aid in identifying specific coins that are traded, lost or stolen as the coin's digital image will be retained by PCGS indefinitely. Of course PCGS stock will skyrocket so be sure and pick some up tomorrow!

By the way Mr. Hall, I would still rather have a PCGS First Stike MS69 1 oz American Buffalo instead of a check.

    Thank you, Saam

All right...........from now on you will be able to submit your old pcgs holdered coins for upgrades etc. without losing the holder...Rattlers..Green etc..

If they grade higher / better now then what's on the slab.....your gonna get a numbered new grade or PQ football/sticker from pcgs on your originally submitted slab so you don't lose the premium associated with the old holders, if no upgrade......you just get your original slab back , all at a fee of course, gotta pay the rent....

    Mr. Willis
My address is on file so I'll just be waiting .....patiently for the check.

    Thanks,
    Eric

PS...I'll spend 1/2 the check with pcgs....and donate the other 1/2 to a YN of the forums choice. image

edited to add a smile........or two image
  • I feel its about time for computer graded coins
  • PCGS will be celebrating it's belated 25th Anniversary as the top TPG!

In attendance will be President Obama doing the honors to slab and grade the first, new special secretly minted 24K gold healthcare reform coins
with Nancy P on the obverse as "Ms. Liberty" and the ship "Titanic" on the reverse!

These can only be ordered via PCGS starting March 25th and ending once we finally payoff our new stimulus package(s)!

    What a GREAT idea!image

PS - China will not be allowed to participate until all 10 of the Langboards' rare 1933's have been certified and slabbed by PCGS and given back to them
    by the US Government!
Telsa is one of the greatest inventors
of all time! Render to Caesar's what is
Caesars and give to God what is God's.
  • My guess is they will go to a half grade scale. Like ms64.5 and ms66.5 and so on. Or i think they should put on the label if the coin if fully struck or weak strike or just and avg strike.
