<The big news, is that they are going to let the Forum do the grading.>

Yikes. The forum tends to undergrade by two points. No tanksimage

    The Big News.
PCGS will open PCGS University. A learning and research center for all ages. It will have a full library.
There will be classes on grading, history, computers, and imaging, just to name a few.
Classes can be taken online or in the classroom. It will house a conservation department next to none.
There will be a museum of historic items as well as a large section on fake and altered coins.
Every fake or altered coin PCGS handles will be added to a giant online reference with high res. images.
David will put on a cool shirt and walk the Halls everyday to make sure everything is going well.
    What a planimage

8 days and counting! Will the announcement be made at 12:01 am on March 25? If so, will it be 12:01 am California time or East Coast time? I need to know in advance, so I can get my nap in prior. David should know some of us are getting older and need our 22 hours of sleep a day! image

I think ldhair is on to something. Collector's University would be a terrific idea, and tuition could be based on how much time one spent there. I think it would be very popular.

I forgot to add one more guess:

PCGS will now designate more than just Morgan dollars with the pl designation to deserving coins, and AU coins will be eligible for the designation.

Listen. Strange women lying in ponds distributing swords is no basis for a system of government. Supreme executive power derives from a mandate from the masses, not from some farcical aquatic ceremony.

the Shared Order concept has been revamped in the vein of social networking, and as it is evolving, corporate networking:

each coin can be shared or the entire order:
share it with a single user or multiple users. Create a group or groups and include those in the shared list. Want the TrueView e-mailed to them? That can be done auto-magically.

no, you poke your new "Coins" into a hole and slide plastic covers over them....

any old "Coins" that are upgraded go into the "Paint Bucket"

For every coin a person submits, he gets one credit toward his renewal fee. After 200 credits, his renewal is automatically paid and life will go on just the same, only better.

The biggest problem facing collectors and the grading services is counterfeits. So, for the the PCGS announcement to be truly big, it must primarily involve a way to minimize or eliminate this problem. The most elegant and failsafe way I can think of to do so would be for PCGS to take high resolution pictures of every coin graded, and provide easy access to those pictures on the internet. In this way a coin being offered for sale could be conveniently and quickly checked against the picture taken when this presumably same coin was graded.

The recent thread surmising that PCGS would add the + and - to the grades is a good policy suggestion. But, that is effectively already being done by CAC, and supported by the public, largely because PCGS has chosen to stay with the same grading levels for the past 25 years. The NGC* designation also has been embraced by the public but PGGS again has refused to adopt this enhancement. Thus, while an announcement about + or * by PCGS would in my judgment certainly be welcome by the majority of collectors, it would more likely qualify as the "little one" rather than the "big one."
  • MsMorrisineMsMorrisine Posts: 33,019 ✭✭✭✭✭
The hi-res ones they keep for themselves so the fine details can't be mimiced.

the low res ones would be ok for now since the counterfeiters do not seem to try too hard to copy even the coloring of the coins.

  • PCGS will employ a team of amazing psychics who will grade your coins utilizing tarot cards and rune-stones. This is in response to all the posts complaining over shipping costs to Newport Beach and the obligatory return postage fees.

Ldhair has a great idea! A Coin University. I'd go in a heart-beat. Coin photography, counterfeit detection, grading, history, et cetera.

That would be a "blow your socks off" great idea.

  • PCGS and NGC are merging and changing their name to PNGC (Professional Numismatic Guaranty Company). NGC needs the help! All new slabs will be clear plastic with ANA - PNG logos.

Is there a prize for the 1,000th post? image

Absolutely no chanting required. Just be sure that PCGS has received your psychic grading fees in a non-refundable form.

  • Three things that will be announced:

    1. The Big One involves new technology that can detect coin-doctoring. Perhaps using SemEdx non-invasive scanning to determine metal content. Possibly also using various wavelengths of light to scan. Could also involve acetone. Many technology possibilities to put coin doctors out of business, and also help detect counterfeits.

    2. PQ (or plus) grading..

    3. New holder.

  • 19Lyds19Lyds Posts: 26,490 ✭✭✭✭
Ultra Violet or Infra Red scanning to detect impurities on the surface of coins submitted for grading. Or even those found on the sidewalk outside!

I decided to change calling the bathroom the John and renamed it the Jim. I feel so much better saying I went to the Jim this morning.

    The name is LEE!
  • Okay, maybe this isn't "The Big One", but I suggest a magnifier built into the slab, like a Rolex date window. It would be a blessing for people like me of a certain age whose eyesight is not what it used to be and who can never remember where I put my loupe.

    My final answer:

David Hall creates this thread more than a month ago in order to assure over 1,000 posts. He also offers a $1,000 check for the person who is closest.
The plan, obviously, is to get this thread to 1,000 posts.
And then David benevolently writes a $1 check to everyone who posted in this thread, as who could ever declare a single winner in a thread like this?

These checks also introduce the new PCGS personal check grading system to complement the currency grading system. Yes, you can now get your personal checks certified and graded!
So, we're talking a thousand "MS-70" certified $1 personal checks from David Hall, destined to be framed by adoring collectors.

  • Pop report redo, requiring PCGS to have a photo of the coin to be included in the pop report. That way, resubmissions will not artificially inflate the pop report image
  • ModernDollarNut's theory about adding die state to the description in the thread here seems very plausible. Mine were attemps at satire.image
  • No way! I wanted 1,000!!! I haven't slept is days waiting to make that post! Oh well, I guess that I will have to try for 2,000.

    This is a good idea.

As previously posted, my effort is now just a personal challenge to come up with a different non-ridiculous idea every day....

however it has been a rough past few days, and I have been reduced to punting.

    Working off this one....

all types of submissions now must be done online, and

grading fees have been raised, but....

    membership fees have been eliminated.

    Anyone can submit to PCGS.

I was going to post this before seeing GSAguys thread, and it has already been discussed here in other forms...

    but

PCGS starts agressively contacting the Secret Service, the FBI and local law enforcement and their own dealer network regarding fake slabs as well as stolen PCGS coins.
(something I hope they could do without having to fear an e-mail from their legal dept.)

PCGS incorporates more anti-counterfeiting measures into their labels with the use of some amount of Offset Printing that also utilize microprinted check digits and graduated color variations on the labels. The validity of the check digits will only be able to be checked by members and the system use will be tracked to the member.

Also... forget the return of the doily... highly intricate borders reminiscent of old currency will be utilized except the patterns will be different for each coin as they too will also serve as a checkdigits of sorts.

    The announcements are:

    1. PQ indicator on grade.

    2. New Holder

    3. The Big One: New Services, which will be sold for additional fees. I am not sure of the range of new services. The services might include some type of sales/price commitment. For example, PCGS might commit to purchase any PQ graded coin for a sight-unseen "bid price", which will be a certain percentage of the price in their price guide. I don't know if they would offer this type of guaranteed purchase for all coins or only for PQ coins. Separate fees for the new services.
  • 1st thing a security feature or tracking device for lost or stolen coins. (Lojack for coins)

2nd thing a 3D rotating holder to allow for complete viewing. (LOL)

3rd thing graders singature on holder and certificate of authenticity for each graded coin signed and numbered.
