Are the Maris and Mantle cards only found in Wal-Mart boxes? It seems as if I have asked this before, and I thought they were in Target boxes as well, but I have not found and of these despite the blasters, rac-pacs, and singles I have bought. Hmmm...

The Mantle cards are only in the loose retail (gravity boxes) at Target. The Maris are the same thing but only at Wal Mart. But the blasters do not have the chase cards. I remember when they had the Perez set and the Mayos in both the blasters and loose retail packs. Not this year. They make you buy more of the loose now.
Well that explains why 5 of my blasters had zero M/M inserets. I hate buying gravity (which means picked through) packs. Thanks for clearing things up a second time for me.

no clue, but I know a silly Dodger fan that, for some reason, needs to fill out his set of marginal player's GU jerseys from this year's set and picked it up for him.
I really don't mind giving out the info if anyone needs it.
Sooooo, I was in target and some heritage packs yelled at me, take me home. I can't pass that up. One of the packs had a Pujols bat on top and a Mantle HR card after that. Ill take it!

This all can get very confusing, some traders go by book value some go by ebay value. I always give the person Im trading with the option to choose what they want. I think book value is easiest, but when only trading apples and apples and oranges and oranges. Chrome unlisted stars book for 6 dollars, this person is right there, but they sell for maybe 2 or 3 dollars, which is less than 50% book. There are autos that sell for 75% book, so you have to be careful. I make it a general rule when Im trading up, and I have traded up here MANY times, I always give more in terms of value. I think that is only fair.
In the defense however, you can't look at lots on ebay, break them down per card and then quote people those prices, first, any trade here is going to be for a lot of cards which contain all cards you need. A lot on ebay would be impossible to find like that. Also remember you don't have to bid on it and you don't have to pay a shipping fee. All those things are worth me paying or trading a bit more to get these cards. I have been a trader who will tend to help out a collector even if I am getting cards that I don't need...I mean, if I have 20 chromes that you need but you only have 10 chromes that I need, then just send me 10 extras so I can send you all the cards you need. In the end I'm going to have back stock of cards yes, but I don't want to be sitting on cards that other collectors here need for sets. Heck Im sending cards anyways, why does it matter if Im sending 10 or 20 cards? You help a guy out one year and he is going to help you out the next.
While I have been going by book value for many of my trades, I actually have not been looking at the players I have been giving up, Pujols books for 12 bucks and the common SP for 6, that can add up, but I think it all evens out in the end. I think the most anal traders that used to lurk here are gone. It is very hard to offend me with a trade offer, I probably should watch how much I spend in postage every year, but what fun would this be without the trades?
...and I don't think there is anything wrong with asking a few members opinion on a trade if you think you are getting the short end of the stick, the true value of this stuff can be tricky, especially if you looked at prices a month ago when this stuff first hit!
I can assure you that there isn't a better place to be trading heritage than right here! Have fun!
I agree with the logic of Walt's reasoning, however I have to echo Geordie's sentiment. I'm assuming you are starting the chrome set? If so, than lots are a way better deal. If the person has the specific cards you need, the trade might make sense, however I would reach out here first without giving up the vintage.
to further my comment - now that I know the identity of ShawnyD's potential trading partner, I'll retract my statement about 'taking advantage' - I know he wouldn't do that. Having said that, I don't think the trade is equitable to ShawnyD. Also, I'll personally vouch for ShawnyD as a good trader - no need to worry about his end.
All I can say is that I purchased 59 chrome cards for less than a $1 a piece on ebay. Maybe they should go for more, but they didn't. I think refractors can go for $2-$3, but I am seeing them go unsold at les than $2 each on the bay.

I think we all run into trades or sales that are not even, or best for us. The best thing to do is walk away if you don't your not going to be happy with it either way sale or trade. I also have had very good luck with ShaneyD in a trade.
ShawnyD - You list all that and cant list the 20 SPs you have available? They're the most important thing, and you will probably get more trade offers by listing them. There's only 20, stop being lazy.
Ok down to 5 cards, all Mantle/Maris. Once I get these I will have completed the Master set w/all variations and insert sets, also the chrome and refractor sets. Who has them, come on don't be scared.
Still need a Corey Hart, #454 to finnish up my first set. I thought I could get it done before the season opened, but don't think it will happen. Is there not any 454's on the board? Come on guys...

Wow! What ever happened to the term "private messages" ShawnyD?
I guess I will throw up a defense here as to my logic and reasoning....
Anyways, as "Brother" knows, I generally use Beckett as a guide to help me facilitate trades. Some people like me use Beckett (because it is easy) and some people use true value which we all know is what is being sold on Ebay. Going strictly by Beckett the trade offer I made makes sense. However, going by EBay prices, the trade offer does not. After Shawn's last PM to me, I looked up one of Shawn's card offerings that books in Beckett for $30 (EXMT conditon makes it book at $18) I expected to see several of these cards in this condition sell on Ebay at around $8 or $9 each. And guess what completed auctions of this card sold for in this condition? Several at approximately $18 each! I was surprised! And if you look up completed Chrome cards that book at $6, guess what they are selling for? $6??????? Not even close -- I was amazed! So, then, why do Chromes book at $6 when you can not get close to this? Why doesn't Beckett lower Chromes to $2 or $3 each? On the other hand, doing more research, Beckett has 2001 Topps Heritage Chrome commons booking at $12 each. I would like to buy as many of these as I can for that price!!! Why can't Beckett be more of a true value? This is the part of the hobby I do not understand.
After a few trades with "Brother" using the true value approach and after seeing how this trade offer went with ShawnD, I have decided to change the way I trade and start using true value when doing trades for vintage. It is one thing if you are trading Chromes for Chromes or vintage for vintage to use Beckett value, but trading Chromes for vintage is like apples and oranges.
ShawnD, I would like to publically apologize for my trade offer -- I was not trying to take advantage of you -- I was just going by Beckett and using it as a guide. I am glad that because of your trade offer, I now realize the inequities that occur when using Beckett. If you still need any more chromes, SPs, or whatever, PM me and I am sure we can work something out using the values of completed auctions on EBay rather than using Beckett.
I am glad you finally saw the light....Book value or beckett has no place in this hobby. the TRUE market value is whatever someone will pay for something and the best way to find that out is use vcp or ebay.....as long as you can get a decent sample size. beckett is so far out of touch i can't believe anyone still uses that system.

done.
<< <i>to further my comment - now that I know the identity of ShawnyD's potential trading partner, I'll retract my statement about 'taking advantage' - I know he wouldn't do that. Having said that, I don't think the trade is equitable to ShawnyD. Also, I'll personally vouch for ShawnyD as a good trader - no need to worry about his end. >>
Thanks!

I am glad you finally saw the light....Book value or beckett has no place in this hobby. the TRUE market value is whatever someone will pay for something and the best way to find that out is use vcp or ebay.....as long as you can get a decent sample size. beckett is so far out of touch i can't believe anyone still uses that system.
ok, end of rant.
