<< <i>If the Mets finish the season 10 games or more out, will Minaya keep his job?
What's the general feeling out there? >>
Mets owner confirms Minaya's job is safe Wilpon tells paper GM, who backs Manuel, will return in '10
By Marty Noble / MLB.com NEW YORK -- Whatever changes are in the offing for the Mets before Opening Day 2010 will involve neither general manager Omar Minaya nor manager Jerry Manuel. Owner Fred Wilpon seemingly laid the blame for the Mets' poor season on other factors -- the spate of injuries that has undermined the team's batting order and starting rotation -- Saturday when he indicated Minaya would return.
Wilpon, who has assumed an increasingly inconspicuous role in the operation of the team in the past two years, was quoted by The New York Post on Sunday as saying, "Am I going to bring Omar back next year? Absolutely. That's a fact." The newspaper also reported that Minaya appeared inclined to retain Manuel: "Jerry is my guy," Minaya said to the Post.
Manuel said that although assurances from the general manager are nice, they won't affect the way he manages the team over the season's final 39 games.
"I appreciate those things, but we're still trying to win games," Manuel said Sunday. "It doesn't change how we go about things."
The Post report came weeks after Wilpon's son, COO Jeff Wilpon, had told Minaya and Manuel each had his support.
A three-year contract extension the Mets negotiated with Minaya in October takes effect next year. Manuel is signed through the 2010 season. The Mets have options on both contracts.
The injuries have been the critical factor in the Mets losing 66 of their first 123 games. But the club's lack of effective replacement players and Minaya's recent episode involving his lieutenant Tony Bernazard and reporter Adam Rubin had prompted speculation that Minaya's job was in jeopardy. If it had been, Manuel's job might have been jeopardized, too.
In the news conference announcing Bernazard's dismissal, Minaya criticized Rubin, who first investigated Bernazard's behavior.
Jeff Wilpon issued a public apology, and Minaya later apologized in private to the reporter.

I don't think its fair to not acknowledge the fact that the mets were hit with a ton of injuries this year.
Imagine if the Phillies lost Rollins, Ibenz, Utley and Howard for the amount of games that the Mets lost to injuries to the key players on their roster.

...then it also has to be acknowledged that the Mets management absolutely sucks, and that they did a poor job analyzing and evaluating the players they signed because reviewing player's past and possible future injuries are all part of the equation. Also part of the equation, which has been expressed by some Mets fans here is their poor training staff...well, who hires these trainers...come on now...you can get this one...right...Mets management hires the trainers and doctors and it is up to Mets management to find the best professional help when needed instead of picking a trainer's name out of the phone book Yellow Pages of "Joe's Baseball Players Rehab Specialists and Pizza Shop"
Mets management from Wilpon down has been pitiful...and what's worse is that these clowns will all get a free pass this year due to all the injuries. The truth is that despite a wealth of resources, the Mets ballclub has been poorly run and seems almost inept at times...and there's no help on the way, either...this club reminds me of the early 90s Mets, lots of big contrcats and very little in the way of results. Is Dallas Green available? LOL..

I have to wonder what Charlie is thinking. His starting pitching has been darn good down the stretch. Moyer fumbles a bit in the first inning and then just shuts the Mets down cold, why not keep him in? It's obvious that the Phillies like to fold in the 8th or 9th when its close, why even bring in those head cases? I would rather have a tired Cliff Lee or tired Hamels pitching the 8th and 9th than anyone in the Phillies bull pen. We all remember how great Lidge was last year, but we forget that Madson was lights out last year too.
tell ya what, just to show ya Mets fans I'm not a bad guy...anyone here guessing right the Mets elimination day, will win two seasons tickets, box seats, at Shea Stadium for the 2010 season.

<< <i>I believe the Mets would have won the NL East by at least 10 games, possibly 20 games or more if it hadn't been for injuries. >>
Smartest thing you have said all year! I agree completely

October is not going to look pretty In Sillieland.
Steve
and then just shuts the Mets down cold, why not keep him in? It's obvious that the Phillies like to fold in the 8th or 9th when its close, why
even bring in those head cases? I would rather have a tired Cliff Lee or tired Hamels pitching the 8th and 9th than anyone in the Phillies
bull pen. We all remember how great Lidge was last year, but we forget that Madson was lights out last year too.
<< <i>Mets magic number remains at 4 - anybody gonna attend any of those Mets 2009 elimination parties? >>
No but I will be here for the Phillies elimination party. In fact I'm the Maitre D and you're the guest of honor Steve.
Please plan to attend. Once we get closer to the actual date, I'll be sure to let you know what time it starts.
Of course it may come sooner than expected if they keep throwing those scrubs out there in an attempt to close out games.
Too bad the Phillies didn't pick up closer when they had the chance LOL
