Ahhh Yes, the tornado, just when the scars were healing.....
Based on my understanding of a conversation I had with an employee at the Mint in D.C., whose name I will not reveal to prevent any retaliation against her, I was provided the following information.
ALLEGEDLY, the Mint has known all this time which orders were going to be shipped and which orders were NOT going to be shipped for at least the last two weeks.
ALLEGEDLY, more than two weeks ago, the Mint had finished preparing certain orders for shipping. These prepared orders are the orders that the Mint has been shipping over the past two weeks. The Mint knew that only these prepared orders would be shipped through today.
So, ALLEGEDLY, if you have called the Mint over the past two weeks to check the status of your order, the Mint knew at that time whether or not your order was going to ship and DID NOT tell you.
ALLEGEDLY, the Mint has NOT prepared ANY additional orders for shipping other than those prepared orders mentioned above.
ALLEGEDLY, the Mint actually stopped shipping ANY additional orders.
ALLEGEDLY, the Mint will resume shipping additional orders this Friday, March 13, 2009.
ALLEGEDLY, the Mint knew that their FIFO shipping policy that their customers relied on had been completely disregarded and is sufficiently ready and willing to blame PBGS for this critical error.
If the abovementioned information is true, and I have no reason to believe it is not since it was told to me so 'matter of fact', then the Mint has lost the trust and respect of an entire generation of numismatists, if not more. The actions and the behavior by the Mint is deplorable, profoundly disturbing, and inexcusable. Even a public apology seems inadequate at best. Nevertheless, numismatists and citizens should know the truth. This is your government; these are your tax dollars. These people are supposedly required to report to you, the people. Demand the truth. Demand a remedy.
Some of the "fun" has been stripped away from this UHR purchase game knowing that my 3084XXXX's were received last week (ordered about 1hr 20 minutes after open) and an honest early order (imron) still sits in limbo. If you plan on sending your UHR into PCGS for FS and your UHR just shipped today, you better not open that US Mint package and you better send your UNOPENED Mint package containing your UHR directly to PCGS.
So, now that things appear to be final for 1st strike, what was the lowest order number shipped and received and what was the latest order number shipped (and received)? Then it would be nice to know how many fell between those numbers and did not get theirs.

I don't think it matters, they are all over the board so there is no use in the data. I looks like most of the late orders shipped and many early orders, probably not the entire ammount they had in stock so the First Strike's should do well over time.
I got mine with this: Order number: 30827231 Order Date: 01/22/2009 at 12:17 AM
I know only one was placed within the first hour. I know at least 3 were placed the day after their release.
The last one was received yesterday, I don't know that order number. I have 5 at pcgs right now and another 2 that were shipped by the mint after the first 5 went in. I will send those in when I get them for the FS designation.

That'd be hard to determine since the Lincoln commemoratives, among all else the mint is currently offering, are counted in the mix. I think Casman had reported the lowest order # here. 30826XXX @ 12:04 (or something like that). A poster a couple pages back reported receiving a coin from 30925XXX.
edited to add: that's about 100,000 orders in about a month & a half.
I also received a confirmation e-mail that my coin was shipped today:
We shipped the items listed below today. Thank you for shopping at the United States Mint Online Catalog Order #: 3090XXXX - 1 Order Date: 1/27/09
So, just send the unopened box to PCGS and it qualifies for 1st strike grading? Wow, this is gonna be exciting to see what it comes out graded as......
Before I get all worked up about finding an authorized dealer I can take my UHR to, to have it sent to PCGS, it occurred to me that I ought to ask members of the board if there's a more convenient way to get the coin graded by PCGS without having to pay them to do it myself.
I don't anticipate I would get much use out of my own membership (yet), and sending the UHR in for grading is, essentially, likely a rare, if not one-time thing. Perhaps I'll have to eat my words down the road, but if that's the case, I ought to be able to see that coming, and simply pull the trigger on a membership tier that will work best for me. Then.
But for now, I'd concluded I would just have to drive the hour or so to get to the closest "authorized" dealer, and arrange it through him/her/them.
Is there another option? Would there be a significant difference in the cost, or am I simply pinching pennies for the out-or-whack price I paid for the UHR to begin with?

Probably the cheapest solution would be to take the coin (in capsule) wrap it up and send it off to PCGS. Join the club for $50 and you can PROBABLY get the UHR graded as a freebie for the 1st quarter of 2009. If not, you'd have to pay another $30. If you had sent it in for First Strike,t hat would have cost you another $14. But if you want First Strike now, you'll have to ship the whole box and pay an additional fee for PCGS to ship the box back to you.

I am not looking for the number ordered but just the spread between numbers to see how screwed up the picking & shipping was. I know I order teo days after they went on sale and gone mine while a bunch of first dayers did not. As for the data being useful, it's not and I don't expect it to be. Inquirng minds want to know. :-)

Well, MrBear, I think I'm going to have to send the whole unopened shipping box, according to what PCGS said when I called... I think I read in here somewhere that total cost was somewhere around $75 total to get a graded coin back in my hands... and I can live with it... really just exploring my options, but it woud seem worthwhile, I suppose, to join the club, enjoy the benefits of a first year membership, and since I have a few Morgans I think would grade out nicely, perhaps that'd be a way to maximize my membership dollars, eh?

UPS for coins sent "overnight" and to an actual address (ie...not a PO Box). So, when you get your email from the USMint saying it is shipped, there is a UPS tracking number included. My email came last week at about 8pm PST. It was at my house by 9:15am the next morning.

I spent Wednesday doing my taxes and waiting for my UHR to arrive since it was shipped Monday.
Local Post Office closes at 5p so by 4p I had resigned myself to shipping the sealed box to PCGS for the FS thing
I went out to get something out of my car and near stepped on a box in a plastic bag (in the rain) sitting on my step. No idea when it came, no ringing of the doorbell, nada
Soooooo....Should I relax and just ship the box tomorrow??? I really wanted to see the coin.....
I went for it. This is my hectic 45 min: 1) Had to join PCGS to submit (was going to join anyway) 2) Open box, admire coin (presentation box is beautiful but a tad excessive) 3)Print out and complete form 4) Package coin, wrap box for Registered Mail 5) Fly to Post Office and got it postmarked at 450pm

Despicable. This disgust is not tempered by my imminent delivery. Of course, I'll be happy to have it, but won't soon forget my good fortune comes at high cost (not to put too fine a point on it) to others...
I look forward to the change in your avatar, despite my growing affection for its artistic message...

Tornado
THIS IS AMAZING!
Demand a remedy.
no book yet ready has a great wood box three pound shipping weight

<< <i>Pumpkin the mistake the mint made was in not having the books ready to ship on time and also taking orders before the coin was ready to ship.
The delivery and FIFO problems seem to be with the new fulfillment center. They messed that up and probably had no idea people fight over these coins like it is life or death.
Anyway I am not excusing any of this, but the mint was also let down as well. The people at the mint though should have done a better job in handling all of this, but this is the way it is with the mint.
Many of us went through issues with the platinum coins last year and earlier and took advantage of the situation by waiting and buying at the end of last year. Some people are benefiting from the problems of the mint right now, look at the prices of the UHR on Ebay.
So when the mint goofs we actually can get rewarded for it. >>
Best way to handle this sitituation is your pocketbook. Stop buying 90% of what you currently do and they will soon get the message. That's the approch I started on a couple of years ago and I no longer purchase Mint Sets, Proof Sets, rolls or many other widgets.
<< <i>Some of the "fun" has been stripped away from this UHR purchase game knowing that my 3084XXXX's were received last week (ordered about 1hr 20 minutes after open) and an honest early order (imron) still sits in limbo. This is not nearly as fun as 2006 silver anniversary sets when everything was on the apparent up and up. Sorry for your continued inexcusable usmint/pbgs debacle.

Hey thanx stckplunge! I'm not the only one on this forum who hasn't received their UHR yet, so at least I'm in good company!!
We appreciate your support and congratulate you for receiving your UHR.
Is it 1st Strike eligible is today is the cut off and it was shipped today?
Imron, sorry you are still waiting!

Yes, I remember the bald eagle release, but at that time I was not imron. I also was not on this forum when the Mint had the platinum debacle either; fortunately, I escaped injury on both releases. Finally, I certainly don't want to be here to see the pukin punkin avatar have an attack out both ends!!

If I don't buy it, somebody else will. But wouldn't it be nice if the entire numismatic community was so close knit as to have one voice capable of taking down the Mint on any given release! Ahhh, cherish the thought!!

Yes, as long as the ship date, from the mint(PBGS) is from March 11th or earlier, and it is sent sealed, unopened to PCGS. Today was the last day to send any opened coins to PCGS for First strike.

Thanks buffaloes!!
And congratulations to you!!
If you plan on sending your UHR into PCGS for FS and your UHR just shipped today, you better not open that US Mint package and you better send your UNOPENED Mint package containing your UHR directly to PCGS.
<< <i>So, now that things appear to be final for 1st strike, what was the lowest order number shipped and received and what was the latest order number shipped (and received)? Then it would be nice to know how many fell between those numbers and did not get theirs. >>
Don't get mad at me but my order # is 30914XXX ordered on 1/30/09. I did call to ask about shipment.
<< <i>So, now that things appear to be final for 1st strike, what was the lowest order number shipped and received and what was the latest order number shipped (and received)? Then it would be nice to know how many fell between those numbers and did not get theirs. >>
I don't think it matters, they are all over the board so there is no use in the data. I looks like most of the late orders shipped and many early orders, probably not the entire ammount they had in stock so the First Strike's should do well over time.
I got mine with this:
Order number: 30827231
Order Date: 01/22/2009 at 12:17 AM
30830XXX
30833XXX
30836XXX
30836XXX
30838XXX
30840XXX
30842XXX
I know only one was placed within the first hour. I know at least 3 were placed the day after their release.
The last one was received yesterday, I don't know that order number. I have 5 at pcgs right now and another 2 that were shipped by the mint after the first 5 went in. I will send those in when I get them for the FS designation.
<< <i>So, now that things appear to be final for 1st strike, what was the lowest order number shipped and received and what was the latest order number shipped (and received)? Then it would be nice to know how many fell between those numbers and did not get theirs. >>
Thank you for shopping at the United States Mint Online

So, just send the unopened box to PCGS and it qualifies for 1st strike grading? Wow, this is gonna be exciting to see what it comes out graded as......
It's official! My UHR will NOT ship before the FS deadline.

<< <i>Before I get all worked up about finding an authorized dealer I can take my UHR to, to have it sent to PCGS, it occurred to me that I ought to ask members of the board if there's a more convenient way to get the coin graded by PCGS without having to pay them to do it myself.

Looks like the coin's made its way to Louisville (from Indianapolis) 12:30 AM... must be on a plane to California by now...

UPS for coins sent "overnight" and to an actual address (ie...not a PO Box).
So, when you get your email from the USMint saying it is shipped, there is a UPS tracking number included. My email came last week at about 8pm PST. It was at my house by 9:15am the next morning.
I've been told I tolerate fools poorly...that may explain things if I have a problem with you. Current ebay items - Nothing at the moment

30925XXX was mine... ordered on 2/2/09 @ 7:01pm. Sent it out yesterday to PCGS for grading, just under the FS deadline for opened coins. It truly is a gorgeous coin.
This is my hectic 45 min: 1) Had to join PCGS to submit (was going to join anyway)
2) Open box, admire coin (presentation box is beautiful but a tad excessive)
3)Print out and complete form
4) Package coin, wrap box for Registered Mail
5) Fly to Post Office and got it postmarked at 450pm
Now I can at least admire the box while I wait
