4 more All Americans today. Now at 31/91. Anderson/Frazier/McMahon were in trade from a good friend. Gradishar was TTM. Met Nnamdi at a work event. What a phenomenal guy. Not a bad word to say about him.

So excited for baseball season! Went over to Dodgers/Angels tonight and knocked out a ball I missed out on last year - 2005 HR Derby Gold Ball Bobby Abreu (he won it).

Also added the following cards in the last week:

    FOOTBALL
2005 Topps AA Charles White (eBay)
2005 Topps AA Ted Hendricks (Donation TTM)
2005 Topps AA Gino Torretta (Donation TTM)

    HOCKEY
1971 Topps and 1976 OPC Mike Robitaille (now 103/132 on 1971 Topps and slowed to a crawl - only 1 out at a signing))

    BASKETBALL
1981 Topps and 1987 Fleer Walter Davis
    2010 SP Authentic Mark Jackson
1979 Topps and 1987 Fleer Alvan Adams
1972 and 1973 Topps Clem Haskins

    BASEBALL
2011 Topps Heritage Kendry Morales (I have 25 of these now. The set's impossible without major effort now that the year passed. Wondering if I should trade all other Heritage years for the current year signed and take a real shot at it. Who knows. Just rambling)

Well, I'm a huge Celtics fan. My dad swears that Russell was the greatest of all time. I have been trying to assemble every C's retired number rookie card signed. Now I'm only missing KC Jones. So happy to add this. It was a way overgraded BGS 5 crackout. It's off to PSA tomorrow.

    Also added:
    BASKETBALL
1972 (2), 1973 and 1978 George McGinnes (sure to be a HOFer with the new ABA committee)

    HOCKEY
    1970, 1972 and 1978 Gary Doak

Now the dog days really set in on this NBA 50 Greatest Players lithograph project. Beyond Larry Bird, there really aren't any players left that sign with regularity. Isiah and Earl Monroe will probably do shows at some point but they're becoming more and more elusive. I would have thought David Robinson would be gettable but in 2 years I haven't heard of him doing one show. Thanks to John for the Kareem signature in Chicago. My father in law knocked out Cousy and Schayes in Washington DC.

    Also added:
1970 and 1971 Topps Bob Boozer
2005 Topps All American Paul Hornung (TTM w/ fee). Now 36/91 on that set.
2003 UD Legends KC Jones signature (I just wanted to own one signed card until I can find a RC to complete my C's retired # set)

Good couple of days. I'm particularly excited about the Pete Cross and Paul Arizin cards. I bought all three from eBay in a bulk deal but when I receive it the package and address looked familiar. It wound up being an SCN member that I had done business with before...and inbetween the PSA slabs was a free 1971 Rod Gilbert!!! He saw my need 71-72 Topps need list on SCN and just sent it for free. If you ever get the chance to help out SCN member 'siggy' please do it! What a great guy!

Really looking forward to the red flip group sub popping in a couple months (I have 39 cards in) but I did re-join PSA in March. I have my collectors club 6 in right now and have about 7 days left on them. These two popped this week:

    1 1 19849171 EXCELLENT+ 5.5 1971 TOPPS 10 JACQUES PLANTE PSA/DNA CERTIFIED Card
    2 1 19849172 VERY GOOD-EXCELLENT 4 1969 TOPPS 5 J.C. TREMBLAY PSA/DNA CERTIFIED Card

They were Blue-Flip to Red-Flip conversions. I find it pretty stupid that PSA won't start Autographed Company Set registries. I am an autographed set collector and I'm not the only one. I have my sets registered in with the Regular sets and PSA has denied requests to make them separate. I'm not REALLY competitive and don't spend a lot of time thinking about registry rank but two things:

    - Auto'd sets will never be able to compete with the non-auto'd sets because nobody is stupid enough to crack PSA 10's to get signed...plus, for anything older than 30 years back or further, there's almost zero chance of a PSA 10 auto'd card of a deceased player.

    - I think it hurts the desire of set collectors to grade commons because the registries are not separate. I'm only grading stuff that I question authenticity on or really want to protect. If the registries were separate I might consider grading some TTM commons to finish registry sets. Thats not an option right now.

    Just food for thought.

    Also two TTMs:
2012 Leaf Metal Golf Brandt Snedeker
    1969 Topps Hockey Earl Ingarfeld

Having a lot of fun with these 2001-02 Fleer Greats of the Game hockey cards. To be honest, I had fallen away from hockey for a few year but the last couple of seasons and playoffs have pulled me right back in. It's spectacular right now. This GOTG set is probably the most attractive on-card autographed set of all time (although it's missing Gretzky/Orr). What's got me so excited is that it's finishable. I haven't tried to do a certified auto set before. Enjoying the heck out of it.

My freebie sub popped for re-joining PSA. Nice thing about living in SoCal is that it as delivered the very next day! Scans included:

    1 1 19848785 VERY GOOD-EXCELLENT 4 1957 TOPPS 77 BILL RUSSELL PSA/DNA CERTIFIED Card
    2 1 19848786 EXCELLENT 5 1980 TOPPS SCORING LEADER PSA/DNA CERTIFIED Card
    3 1 19848787 EXCELLENT 5 1971 TOPPS 2 NHL ASSISTS LEADERS PSA/DNA CERTIFIED Card
    4 1 19848788 NEAR MINT 7 1971 TOPPS 3 NHL SCORING LEADERS PSA/DNA CERTIFIED Card
    5 1 19848789 VERY GOOD 3 1971 TOPPS 66 BARCLAY PLAGER PSA/DNA CERTIFIED Card

The Barclay Plager card was the one I was most excited about. I knew everything else was legit. Plager is one of the hardest 7-8 signed cards to find in the 71-72 set.

Nice sub!! I'm glad to see your Russell found its way into a PSA 4 holder. I know you were worried that it was going to get downgraded to a 3 WTG!
  • Great league leaders cards. Orr, Esposito, and Bucyk are awesome. Normally not a fan of cards signed by multiple players but those turned out very nice especially the Scoring Leaders. The Magic/Bird/Dr.J card is a beauty although I hate that panel set. That Bill Russell would be the finest card in just about any collection. The Russell rookie has to be about a thousan bucks signed and slabbed. Barclay Plager died in his 40's he was probably better know as a coach. You should be proud of some awesome cards.

New additions! Stoked to add Gerald Henderson. He's been a recluse for quite awhile. Nice to add him to my 84 Celtics Media Guide and some cards. Everything else here is pretty much set cards. I LOVE this 2001 Fleer Greats of the Game Certified set.

I realized when I started this All American set that there was no choice but to pay for some of the big signatures at shows. I made a list of the guys that will never sign TTM, even for a small fee, and all the ones from today were on that list. I like 3 out of the 4 very much but have to say that Marcus Allen's signature is total garbage. For $60/each, give me more than this crap. All in all, a good day for returns.

You have really been getting some nice set cards back over the past couple months. I am really digging the All American set. That sucks about the Marcus Allen's, he is really a miserable person when it comes to autographs. I have been holding off getting a rc signed at a show because his signature has become garbage. I have read numerous stories how he just a complete jerk when approaching him for an autograph. From my understanding, he thinks that all autograph collectors are just looking to sell the stuff he signs.
  • You bought the Komives. Nice card. I actually got Marcus Allen ttm for free right after he went into the Pro Football Hall of Fame. I am collecting all the guys that signed for free in the All-Americans. Good Luck with that set.

I can't believe how happy I am with this checklist card. I sent it to Slick Leonard, coach of the 1972-73 ABA Champion Pacers. I asked if he would write '73 ABA Champs on it. Instead, he signed his name and checked off every guy on the team - front and back. I was skeptical for a minute because now it looks like a checked checklist but after repeatedly looking at it. it may be my favorite checklist ever, and I have quite a few fun ones.

    ADDITIONS
    FOOTBALL
2005 Topps All American Desmond Howard (now 48/91 on the set w/ 2 out at signings)

    BASKETBALL
1961 Fleer and 1972 ABA Checklist Bob 'Slick' Leonard
1971 and 1972 Topps Byron Beck
1970 and 1972 Topps Clyde Lee
1957 Topps HOF RC Clyde Lovellette (little bummed about personalization - I sent $20 with it)
    1961 Fleer Arlen 'Bucky' Bockhorn
    1987 Fleer Phil Hubbard

    HOCKEY
2001-02 Fleer Greats of the Game Gilbert Perreault
2001-02 Fleer Greats of the Game Bernie Federko
2001-02 Fleer Greats of the Game Grant Fuhr
2001-02 Fleer Greats of the Game Joe Mullen
1969, 1970 and 1971 Topps Eddie Shack (thanks for going to that show eyebone!!!)
    1978 Topps Bobby Clarke
1971 Topps Bob Berry (now 107/132 on this set - only 7 remaining living guys) - this was an eBay purchase. Will go to PSA in next group sub.

Thanks Doug. I hope you do get back on the horse. I always enjoyed your thread. This is mostly a baseball message board so I'm sure the other sports don't interest many...but completing baseball sets is nearly impossible and I'm getting less and less interested in baseball by the day. I wish English soccer guys had cool cards and would sign TTM. I'd really enjoy that.

I made an argument the other day that this signed set collecting is one of the true "hobbies" left in this overall hobby. Most of this stuff isn't ever going to be worth what I paid for it. If I pay $60 for a 2005 Topps All American Marcus Allen, I couldn't even sell it for $30. Value is nice but this really is a hobby to me and I really enjoy it.

Digging the heck out of this 2001 Greats set. I may do the Football and Basketball counterparts one day. We'll see. I did notice that the Gordie Howe for auction this weekend went for $300+. I wish I could find the number issued of each SP. I know which ones are SP's but there's no registry for the hockey set and I can't find those figures.

Also figured I'd update the status overall on many of the sets that I post here:

    BASKETBALL
    1969 Topps BKB: 80/99 (80.81%)
    1970 Topps BKB: 58/175 (33.14%)
    1971 Topps BKB: 88/233 (37.77%)
    1972 Topps BKB: 85/264 (32.2%)
    1986 Fleer BKB: 39/132 (29.55%)

    FOOTBALL
    2005 Topps All American (Retired): 50/91 (54.95%)

    HOCKEY
    1969 Topps HK: 45/132 (34.09%)
    1970 Topps HK: 51/132 (38.64%)
    1971 Topps HK: 107/132 (81.06%)
    2001 Fleer GOTG Certified 26/87 (29.89%)

    ADDED
    HOCKEY
2001 Fleer GOTG Bobby Hull SP
2001 Fleer GOTG Bobby Clarke SP

I'm starting a new project this month that should be exciting. I'll post as soon as the first couple signatures arrive. As for now, here are this week's returns. I'm now 109/132 on 1971-72 Topps Hockey. It's the closest (82.58%) that I've come to finishing a set so far. If you know of any for sale, I'll send you my list!

On another front, now comes the hard part on 2005 Topps All American football. I have 53/91 but it comes time to decide if I want to pay Jim Brown/Troy Aikman/Barry Sanders/John Elway etc. $100+ each to sign their cards. I may delay on that front for a bit if I can resist. We'll see.

    A few points ...
Those Fleer Greats of the Game cards look awesome signed.

Love that he signed it Hot Rod -- above a few posts

    Nice Nance
Looking for a Glen Rice Inkredible and Alex Rodriguez cards
  • Excellent 80 of the 1969 Basketball is terrific and 81% of the 1971 Hockey is very impressive.
  • How many 1957/58 Topps Basketball do you have?

@cardsandbeads, I have 26/80 1957 Topps basketball. I was going to try for the set once upon a time but I think the Maurice Stokes signature makes it impossible. At least with 1971 hockey, Wayne Maki had two+ years to sign one and he's not a HOFer. Stokes had less than a year. Plus, if one did surface, HOF collectors would make it a five figure card. I can never afford to spend that on one piece of cardboard. My whole collection might not be worth five figures!

Been busy working on several projects and haven't had a chance to update newer stuff. Here's the most recent:

    FOOTBALL
2005 Topps AA Roland James (now 54/91 with three at signings)

    BASKETBALL
    1971 Topps Leroy Ellis (eBay)
    1971 Topps Don May
1971 and 1972 Topps Dave Stallworth
1970 and 1972 Topps Rick Roberson
    1972 Topps Jim McDaniels

    HOCKEY
    1970 Topps George Swarbrick
1970 and 1978 Topps Gerry Meehan
1969 and 1971 Topps Ted Hampson
1965 and 1970 Topps Doug Mohns (w/ donation)
1971 Topps Bob Berry (I had just bought another one on eBay too. Oh well)
2011-12 Parkhurst Champions Marcel Dionne signed Mini (pack pulled)
    2001 Fleer GOTG Bob Nystrom

Also added Don May to my 1969-70 NBA Champion New York Knicks Media Guide.

Awesome returns as always. I gotta get some more All Americans signed if I ever want to finish that set.
  • 26 out of 80 is pretty darn good. There has to be at least 30 dead. One of my regrets was never sending my 1957 to George Yardley to get signed. I saw a PSA Yardley go for like $800 . Maurice Stokes probably doesn't exist. Heck I have never seen Neil Johnston either he died in 1978. 54/91 is awesome on the All-Americans.

I never got a George Yardley either. I've always been a huge basketball fan but never collected signed cards until this thread started. I was strictly a golf collector from about 2002-then. I do have another attempt out to Vern Mikkelsen. We'll see. He had a signing window open up pretty recently. I really don't think a Maurice Stokes exists signed. I don't know the release date for 1957-58 Topps basketball but I know the season started October 22. Stokes' injury happened in early March. If I had to guess, I'd say the release date of the set was late November. If that's true, Stokes had about 4 months to sign one. I would bet there were a couple that he did sign but one surviving in 2012 would surprise the heck out of me.

This is the tough part about set collecting. It's a passion for completionists...but actual completion is nearly impossible. I actually think the 69 and 70 Topps hockey sets are easier than 1971 but the Tim Horton cards make it 99.9% impossible and the rare chance that one exists would spell 5 figures in bidding. Even the '05 All American's aren't REALLY completable. The Ironhead Heyward card might not exist. Someone on the SCN board claims to have bought one on eBay awhile back but he was already in hospice when the set was released. Of every set I'm working on, I think that's the closest I'll come to completing one. I think 88/91 are doable. Ed Marinaro won't sign them. Kenny Easley is super tough and Heyward are the ones that I don't think I'l see. I do think a Merlin Olsen or two will pop up one day. I will eventually get to 120/132 on that hockey set too. I wish I could come that close on 71 basketball but some of the obscure ABA guys just aren't findable and the couple John Brisker cards would fetch quite a bit signed.

Lots of positive returns yesterday and today but one seriously bummed me out. People that aren't set collectors might have a hard time appreciating this. There is a former NHL player named Charlie Burns who played in the 60's and into the early 70's. I've been collecting 1971-72 Topps hockey signed for about 16 months and reached 109/132 last week. From all of my discussions with other collectors and research with promoters etc, Charlie Burns is the single toughest living signer. He hasn't ever done a show and never signs in the mail. So when I saw Sportsworld USA announce a signing with him two weeks ago, I nearly fell over. There wasn't enough time to find every card of his ever produced but i managed to get a hold of 68T, 69T, 70T, 71T, 71OPC to send in. Needless to say, all the cards meant nothing to me besides the 1971 Topps that I never though I'd get signed. I would have sent in 5 of that card if I could have had them in time. Last year a 1968 signed Burns sold on eBay for $500 from his playing days.

So, needless to say, when I got the package back yesterday I was overjoyed...until I opened it. Of course, the 68T, 70T and 71OPC were all great...and the 71 Topps, the only one I gave two craps about was totally smudged. I was heartbroken. I've emailed them asking them to replace it but the odds of them having another in stock are very low. I hate this hobby sometimes.

Other than that, here are the other returns:

    HOCKEY
    1968, 1969, 1970 and 1971 Topps + 1971 OPC Charlie Burns
    2001 Fleer GOTG Darryl Sittler

    FOOTBALL
    2005 Topps AA Jim Plunkett

    BASEBALL (Sort of)
    2008 Topps Heritage Dalai Lama

Also added Keith Foulke to my 2004 Red Sox WS team ball

    GOLF
Charl Schwartzel signed Masters logo golf ball

  • That is a great Mikkelsen signed even though his looks like he had a stroke. PSA 5 is like $60 card that would have awful to never get back. Great card. Wish I had one. Waited almost 3 years for him to sign my Upper Deck Generations, my guess is he had a stroke.

Pleased to say that Sportsworld USA is going to try to take care of me on the Charlie Burns disaster. They're going to reach out to him to see if he'll make good. We'll see! I sent them 3 copies of the card just in case and told them to just send me one back.

Other items to arrive over the last few days:

    FOOTBALL:
2005 Topps All American Cris Carter (eBay purchase - he doesn't do a lot of signings so I picked up a pre-PSA'd one)

    BASKETBALL:
1972 Topps Willis Reed (eBay purchase)
1972 Topps Ron Williams (eBay purchase - deceased player)
    1971 Topps John Barnhill
1972 Topps Don Nelson (LONG TTM wait for this one)

    HOCKEY:
1959 Topps Charlie Burns (eBay purchase from Sportsworld)
1968 and 1968 Topps Jim Neilson
1977 and 1978 Topps Jude Drouin
2001 Greats of the Game Brian Bellows
2001 Greats of the Game Bill Barber (now 31/87 on the set)
