I am so sorry for your loss and want to state that along with everyone else how much I appreciate your sons sacrifice in fighting to preserve our way of life and defend our country against those who would rather see it destroyed.
It is very sad that such a young life was cut short, but at least it was for a noble cause and not a meaningless one.
I met and spent some time with a gentleman today who made me think about you and your son. He is 88 years old and nearing the end of his life. He proudly had a case hung on the wall of his office full of medals. I immediately recongnized both a purple heart and a bronze star. I asked him about his service and enjoyed hearing about his experiances. It seems he actually has two purple hearts as he was wounded twice in action in the South Pacific during WWII. He was at every major battle from Guadalcanal to Iwo Jima. The Bronze star was for saving four of his buddies at Guadalcanal, however he told me two of them lost their lives a few days later in another engagement that he missed due to being in the hospital from wounds received in the previous battle.
He also fought in the Korean war as well.
I thanked him for his service to his country and for keeping us safe. I stated that I felt that the current situation was a bad one, as we were not in a war in the truest sense and that the enemy was not as defined and easily identified such as he had faced. His response was that they had actually engaged us in our own country and if we did not pursue the battlefront over there then there would be more 9-11's for us to worry about here. Certainly made me think, therefore this post...
Let's all take the time to thank those who put their lives on the line for us everyday to protect us from harm. Thank you Kory, and thank you to your son.

Oh Kory, I don't know you, so it's hard to understand why this tragic news is affecting me so deeply..... I feel an ache that fills my being. I hope God is allowing us all to carry some of your crushing load and ease a pain that you could otherwise not hold.
Kory, I'm still at a loss for words but from the picture with your wonderful son in a hangar, I can only assume that you are in the aviation field and that the missing wingman memorium seems appropriate.
I am speechless, I lost my ability to think of anything to say. As the father of a daughter in the US NAVY, I understand. I think. I am soooooo sorry to hear this. My thoughts and prayers are with you.
Hi all. I am at a loss for words. Thanks so much CU for locking this to the top. I have news I'd like to share with you all. This is so personal, but youall have made me so thankful, I feel and I want to let everybody know where we're at. First of all, the US Army has been so good to us, so helpful, and so supportive it just amazes me. Michaels remains will be flown into Dover Delaware on the 20th around 1230 PM. The standard practice is for a soldier to escort the body home. Mikeys Mother and Sister called me and didn't want "some stranger" to bring Mikey home, they wanted me to. They also thought Mikey would want me to also. I contacted our Casualty Assistance Officer, a wonderful man named Capt. Brad Dean and asked if that would be possible, and what would I need to do to make it happen. He said to let him make some phone calls, and he would get back to me. In the meantime, I got a call from a SSgt Stacy Friend who was Mikeys team leader in his first deployment, and we cried together the whole time we were trying to talk. I asked him, if he could, that I would be honored if he could join me in the trip to bring Mikey home. He said he, also would consider that an Honor, but had to make some calls and would call me back. Meantime, Capt Dean called me back and said there would be no problem me escorting my son home. I told him I didn't want to throw a wrench in things but had talked to Sgt. Friend and if it was ok, would like him to join me on this endeavor. He immediately took Sgt. Friends phone #, called him, called his commander (he is in Ft. Hood Texas) and got the approval from all parties for Sgt. Friend to accompany me in bringing Mikey home. I also found out that Mikeys Sister's husband, an ex-Marine (I know your never an ex marine) knows some Patriot Guard Riders, and has made arrangements for a Patriot Guard to escort us from DFW airport to Kingston, Okla. where Mikeys Mom lives and where the services will be held. From such deep sorrow, comes an unexpected joy. Mikey has to stay in Dover for at least 72 hours before they willl release him, so I still don't have any concrete dates or times, but my friends, it's gonna happen, and I feel so Honored to be the father of such a fine young American Hero. I also feel Honored that so many folks, here on the boards care so deeply to have such wonderful, heartwarming responses to our devastation. I thank you all from the bottom of my heart. I was up nearly all night last night reading and re-reading this post with tears running down my eyes, I just have to say I love all of you. Thank you so very much for all your warm thoughts, prayers, and well wishes, and I have to say also, there's no place like home. With me and my families deepest thanks....Kory Thompson

As has been expressed by so many others here, Michael and his ultimate sacrifice for country will never be forgotten by any of us. God Bless.
Kory - Thank you for updating us about your son. It must be comforting for you to know that your son continues to be looked after by the most honorable people that this country has to offer. As these next days go by, I hope your grief that you now must feel will be overcome by an overwhelming sense of pride. Pride for what your son has done. He gave, unselfishly, his life for us.
By letting us know about your son, you've reminded us that we can all show our support. Maybe we can't keep our troops out of harms way, but we can all do something that together will make a difference.
-The next time you see someone in military uniform, thank them. You owe them.

After reading every post here I am just shaken at the loss you are facing. Losing your child is about the most dificult thing imaginable. Having him lose his life in the service of our great nation does give some solitude and comfort, I suppose. He will not be forgotten for this! The nation owes your family a debt of gratitute that cannot be measured. We all owe you a debt of gratitute.
While waiting for my flight to Long Beach some servicemen disembarked the offloading plane. The entire gate area stood and applauded! It was very emotional as we all knew that there were others who were not coming home through that gate at the airport. They arrived through another gate. How can we give them applause? By doing some small gesture for the ones who remain. To honor the memory of the fallen. To honor our country and pray our leaders have the moral fortitude to lead our nation out of harms way quickly and honorably.
Kory -- The news of the tragic loss of your son and all of the outpouring of support on this forum have made me very sad--I can't begin to imagine the sorrow you must be feeling. Your son is a heroic young man and we are all forever indebted to him.
You're pictures paint a thousand words. Having recently became a father I cannot even imagine the pain you are going through, but having served in the military I know that your heart will be full of pride.
Words can never say what one feels in these situations....But i will try to convey my families sincerest thanks for your sacrifice and pass along our most heartfelt condolences and prayers for you and your family...
