Here is the "other Hookneck." It's an 1834 Zacatecas Hookneck 1R pattern (this specimen ex-David O'Harrow aka "Mr. Hookneck").
There is an almost obliterated photo of the 8R pattern in Buttrey-Hubbard, but nobody I know has ever seen the actual coin. Almost as rare are the 1R patterns, which I have here. I've never heard of an unimpaired one.
The dies were created as an 8R by the famous American engraver Charles Cushing Wright of New York, and the patterns most likely struck in the USA. This is the only-known coin engraved by CCW as he was predominantly a medal engraver. I am not sure how the 8R dies were reduced to strike the 1R patterns.
How do we know Mr. Wright designed and engraved this coin? Because I own the obverse die and it has his initials on it! The reverse die has apparently been lost to posterity (probably because it was "uninteresting").
How I got this die is a cool story unto itself. It is not ex-O'Harrow. It was found recently in New Jersey.
Actually looking at this again, there must have been 2 sets of dies created. One for the 8R and another for the 1R. The design elements are slightly different between my 1R pattern and the 8R obverse die.
Recently got this one. 1858 ten cent in SP64 with reeded edge. The reeded edge 1858 specimens are much rarer than the plain edge ones. Only about 10 or 12 known.

Happy Thursday. I found this little treasure at Great Collections. No other than an 1823 Mo 2 reales for Augustin, and MS64 no other. Very difficult coin, and happily, not that expensive (perhaps the venue?). Very happy...
Just saw your post. I like GC but I think you have it right. I wouldn't have sold that coin there if I owned it.
@WCC I am sure that in a different auction house, it would have been a bit more expensive (not that it was cheap). While I go to GC frequently, I think you need to have a lot of free time to do that and their world coin selection is limited (but getting a bit better). And 99% of the time there is nothing there that I want. But this one was the exception. Truly difficult to find, and more in this grade.

I've seen this. Much better in hand than this photo, photo doesn't ooze originality. Crazy coin.
Plus, this is the photo from the auction, really horrid photography, guess you had to be there..
