Great comments. I do have to make a few important points though.....agreed that the recognition has to occur for this coin to have staying power, but dont under estimate the power and size of the "following" that the ASE series has....
1) Approximate demand of 600-900K coins in both proof and unc annually, a highly collectible series since 1986 - if this variety ever becomes part of the regular set (i.e. needed) and approximate availability is less than 25,000 pieces - watch out!!!!! EVIL - to borrow your coined phrase!
2) No where near that demand for the most recognizable double die the collecting community has ever known....the 1955/1955 Lincoln....there are not 600-900K collectors looking for a 55 DD..don't think this is a good comparison for mature pricing....
3) It's older sister, the 95W Proof, at 30,125 coins - pricing in the $4K range for 69 DCAMS.........shows where this coin could go.....in 69!! if availability is sub 25,000 coins, and believe me, the 95w is VERY AVAILABLE in the marketplace and still priced north of $4K in 69 DCAM
Of course all my opinion. You know, we all have them.
any grade thru rates at pcgs for FS 07 reverses in MS70 greater than 10% are obviously reholdered coins purely for designation as 07 reverses
Can't buy that fish. Other POPs never went backwards, the FS POPs just went up.
With all FS now to be done by DEALER only, it will only take on the reputation as a rigged game and just confirm what many suspected, true or not. Nothing that invokes a special interest, behind close doors feel ever works.
Just picked this up on the Bay. I thought it was cool and saved me the time/cost of sending them in myself for reholdering. All ER's (picture is the seller's)

According to the HSN guy ...The Oklahoma quarter is the lowest mintage ever among the state quarters. I really don't know if this is true. He also said the US Mint stopped the production of the 2008 ASE because of cost. Not stop selling but stopped minting. Again i dont know where he got this info from so take it for what it is.
what's new?.. well let's see.. in no particular order..
the two orders of two i placed in early May after the magic window had apparently slammed shut, which yielded a quartet of MS69 08/08s are taped up, labelled, and going back to Memphis for a refund.. i pondered what to do with them.. i don't really "seriously" collect ASEs.. no album full.. just a bit of this and that.. but as Kevin "Otto" Kline yelled in "A Fish Called Wanda".. DISAPPOINTED!.. no happy hour, no happy dance.. just a
i bought a 2006-W raw off eBay a couple months ago because it's a semi-key (and plan to have it slabbed.. it kinda smells like a 70 to me..) ..
i bought the 10nd Anniversary sets at a hundred a pop and made more than 15 times my money back re-selling them.. that worked out nicely..
after they all went byebye.. i bought a slabbed PR69 Reverse Proof just because i think it's cool and wanted one..
have a regular non-W 2007 i won in NN's essay contest earlier this year.. they had 50 published entrants, and 20 prizes.. Mr. Top Prize (Denis Loring, who just happens to be listed on PCGS's Price guide list of experts.. coincidence or conspiracy?.. many people emailed and told me they thought my essay was the best of the bunch..).. well, he won the top prize of a $20.00 Gold Liberty (raw).. 19 others including moi won a regular 2007 ASE, all entrants got their essays published.. i was really hopng for that top prize, but alas, it was not to be.. a very strange gap in value between the top prize and the 19 second prizes..
have four NGC MS69 ER 08/07s sitting here maturing like fine wine.. will sell them "some day" when i think the price is right. it ain't right yet.. i still think it has a long way to go (up).. before it peaks.. others may disagree.. 'tis their right..
never got one raw, and gave up trying.. don't plan to buy any more, raw OR in slabs unless one of these lotto tickets in my pocket pays off.. then i'll decorate a wall with PCGS 70s..
got a couple of 2000s sitting in Millenium coin and currency sets..
have two 2001 Proofs in OGP and can't even remember why i bought them seven years ago..
and that's it for my ASE collection..
meanwhile.. this showed up in today's mail.. a box of money from the Pope.. two 2008 Mint / BU sets, and a 2008 Proof set.. appearing later on a eBay near you.. that package travelled all the way from Italy to So. Calif. by Registered Air mail, which took a week.. and arrived in the condition you see below, like it was mailed from next door.. just thought i'd toss up the photo (before i open the package).. to show ya what Vatican coin packaging looks lke.. brown Kraft paper, folded and glued shut over a plastic box holding the three sets.. quaint, to say the least.. like you'd wrap and mail a package in the 1950s..

<< <i>hrlaser, how about posting pics of the sets for us in a new thread??? >>
you've never seen Vatican sets?.. they're all over eBay, well not ALL over.. but there are some listed.. now that the 2008 sets are finally shipping.. (The Vatican has been making both kinds of sets since they joined Euroland in 2002..) .. the Mint / BU sets are kind of spartan but attractive tri-fold cardboard holders, but the Proof sets are in really regal, gorgeous presentation cases, usually plush velvet on the outisde, and white satin on the inside.. with ornate brass hinges and front locking thingie.. COA on parchment.. is tucked into a satin pocket on the inside lid.. and make the yearly US Mint Proof sets and even the Presige Proof sets look like.. well.. crap.. interesting thing is the Mint / BU set holders and the Proof sets satin and velvet cases are a different color each year.. this year they're red.. in the Proof set, each coin is in a capsule, arranged in a circule around a central Sterling Silver Medal, which is not encapsulated.. the Medal's design changes every year.. rather than waiting for me to take pictures.. go to http://www.muntplaats.nl a mongo Euro dealer in the Netherlands.. click the union jack at the top so you can read the site in English, find "Vatican" in the country list on the left.. they have pictures of every year's sets going back to 2002.. understand i am on the Vatican's (closed) subscription list and this package came to me directly from the Vatican.. at issue price.. not from a dealer..

Loki, that was a great trip down memory lane. I have to confess that I've read every single one of the 3000+ posts in this thread, so fascinated have I been with this coin. About the only thing I regret is not ordering sooner from the Mint when I first noticed this thread. I think that was round 200 or so posts.
Man, that seems like a lifetime ago (and not more than two months ago!).

he has 20 feedbacks total.. he has one Neutral and no Negatives.. i ran his eBay ID through toolhaus.org.. he has one neutral from last October which reads "If you have a problem, tell me not feedback. You are lucky this is not negative." (always proofread so you don't any words).. he has no negatives in his three years on eBay.. i don't remember Neutrals impacting overall Positive feedback percentages.. is that my memory failing, or yet another eBay rule change they snuck in there?.. i thought Neutrals didn't impact overall Positive feedback percentage (!?)..
the last time i checked, 1 out of 20 is five percent, not six percent, so how in the Hell does he have 94% feedback with 20 total, one Neutral, and no Negatives?.. ::rubbing eyes::

How does one search TeleTrade for 08/07s?.. i KNOW they have sold at least ONE, or at least one was listed.. maybe it didn't sell.. i've been using them since 2001 and know all about Mr. Wantlist and so on.. but i can't figure out what parameters to enter in either an Upcoming Auctions search or a Price guide search to see if they have any of these listed, or have actually sold any.. (if a "lot" is listed in one of their thrice-weekly auctions and does not sell, it simply vanishes from one's Tracking list as though it was never there).. so i want to set up a Mr. Wantlist search to get hits on these coins, but i'll be damned if i can figure out what their search algorithm is for it.. or which boxes to tick off..
has anyone done this successfully without having to plow through EVERY upcoming (or closed-in-the-past-couple-of-months) auctions in the "Bullion - Silver" and "Errors" categories and gotten any hits or figured out what to tick off and get results?.. i'm selecting all upcoming auctions, year 2008 to 2008, any grader, non-proof, Mintmark W, and then tried various keywords in the speicifics box like Reverse, Reverse of 2007, Reverse 2007, Rev 2007, 2007, and a few others.. then ticked off both the Bullion - Silver and Error categories.. and gotten ZERO results, either in upcoming auctions or a past auctions search going back sixty days (or if i log in, i can go back 12,000 days or however long TeleTrade has been in business.. EVERY single coin they've ever sold is still there.. like in Heritage's Permanent Auction Archives)..
if you're a TeleTrade black belt master and you've figured out a search for 08/07s.. clue me in..

I guess you could just search for the 08-W and use in the keyword search or just scroll through the 2 pages. Make sure to check "Non_Proof" and "W" mintmark
thanks.. i figured they were abbreviating the keywords in some way, but that's one combination i didn't try..

Do any of you ever get the feeling that PCGS rations out the 70's in certain ratios on moderns based on how many you send in. I sent in 5 beautiful ASE's that looked flawless to me. I got back one 70 and I am happy with that but looking at the other 4 69's, I found a flaw with one but I am perplexed about the other 3. Strike is great. Luster uniform. No contact marks or even those pin point breaks in the satin finish. Now they are entombed in 69 plastic and I think they deserve better. The reason I suspect this is because I purchased an already graded ASE graded PCGS MS70 from a seller and looking at it I saw contact marks on the letters. It looked crappy compared to my 69's.
Gold and silver are valuable but wisdom is priceless.
I agree completely. I sent in 12 of what I thought were perfect coins and got 1-70 and 11-69's. I know if I broke them out and sent them to NGC, I would get at least 6-70's.

That was my rant many moons ago....It was said that they only give out "a small percentage of 70's" . This creates an artificial rarity and boinks the many "69's" that would probably qualify as 70's. If I cherrypick 20 coins out of 100 and can find no imperfections on any of them I should expect at least 15 70's. I would bet I would only get 2 at most..just because that's the way it is.
I recently did this with 08/08 ASE's across the street...21 cherrypicked....13 70's returned.....sent 16 08/07's.....12 70's returned. Looser standards??? or true grading not dependant on "just because"????....Flame me if you will but this is only my opinion
Maybe it's to limit their liability when the 70's spot....can't argue with that

According to the HSN guy ...The Oklahoma quarter is the lowest mintage ever among the state quarters. I really don't know if this is true. He also said the US Mint stopped the production of the 2008 ASE because of cost. Not stop selling but stopped minting. Again i dont know where he got this info from so take it for what it is.
this is about the number(180-190 auctions) from a month ago when they were selling for about $175-275.
lets all see what the drop in auctions will do for the price.
edited to fix typo
the two orders of two i placed in early May after the magic window had apparently slammed shut, which yielded a quartet of MS69 08/08s are taped up, labelled, and going back to Memphis for a refund.. i pondered what to do with them.. i don't really "seriously" collect ASEs.. no album full.. just a bit of this and that.. but as Kevin "Otto" Kline yelled in "A Fish Called Wanda"..

It will be interesting to see the supply diminish, hopefully.

Edited to change the bolded item.
<< <i>Loki, that was a great trip down memory lane. I have to confess that I've read every single one of the 3000+ posts in this thread, so fascinated have I been with this coin. That was a cool summary of this thread...I actually just looked back and I was quite surprised to see that I was the THIRD post in this thread all the way back on April 20th....why oh why didn't I order 1000 ASE's from the mint that day!??

3333 and add 76 that were in John Naneys original post. 2008-W UNC ASE Question? ? ?

Other 67175 38.3
these spikes in price tend to be short lived and when the order is filled, prices tend to lag again....
i think this coin has legs, and will continue to sell strong, how strong is the question........

he has 20 feedbacks total.. he has one Neutral and no Negatives..
i ran his eBay ID through toolhaus.org.. he has one neutral from last October which reads "If you have a problem, tell me not feedback. You are lucky this is not negative."
(always proofread so you don't any words).. he has no negatives in his three years on eBay.. i don't remember Neutrals impacting overall Positive feedback percentages.. is that my memory failing, or yet another eBay rule change they snuck in there?.. i thought Neutrals didn't impact overall Positive feedback percentage (!?)..
the last time i checked, 1 out of 20 is five percent, not six percent, so how in the Hell does he have 94% feedback with 20 total, one Neutral, and no Negatives?.. ::rubbing eyes::

has anyone done this successfully without having to plow through EVERY upcoming (or closed-in-the-past-couple-of-months) auctions in the "Bullion - Silver" and "Errors" categories and gotten any hits or figured out what to tick off and get results?.. i'm selecting all upcoming auctions, year 2008 to 2008, any grader, non-proof, Mintmark W, and then tried various keywords in the speicifics box like Reverse, Reverse of 2007, Reverse 2007, Rev 2007, 2007, and a few others.. then ticked off both the Bullion - Silver and Error categories.. and gotten ZERO results, either in upcoming auctions or a past auctions search going back sixty days (or if i log in, i can go back 12,000 days or however long TeleTrade has been in business.. EVERY single coin they've ever sold is still there.. like in Heritage's Permanent Auction Archives)..
if you're a TeleTrade black belt master and you've figured out a search for 08/07s.. clue me in..
- John Wayne, "The Shootist" (1976.. his final film)..
in the keyword search or just scroll through the 2 pages.
Make sure to check "Non_Proof" and "W" mintmark
<< <i>"Rev of '07" works in the Keyword Search >>
thanks.. i figured they were abbreviating the keywords in some way, but that's one combination i didn't try..

<< <i>I agree completely. I sent in 12 of what I thought were perfect coins and got 1-70 and 11-69's. I know if I broke them out and sent them to NGC, I would get at least 6-70's. >>
Crack them out
<< <i>Do any of you ever get the feeling that PCGS rations out the 70's in certain ratios on moderns based on how many you send in >>
That was my rant many moons ago....It was said that they only give out "a small percentage of 70's" .
