One of them is really ugly with tape over the pencil graph, the other two look decent. There is usually one on ebay in a store that is way overpriced so it continues to sit in the store.
I've seen a few different Maris signed rookies over the years, most of them on off-condition cards. I was happy to grab this one (not for sale of course).

Nice Maris, that's one of the cleaner ones I've seen. If I find one for the right price, I'll pick it up even though he's outside my scope of HOF'ers. He fits in my scope as a "Legend", for the record he held for so long.
Wait for a nice one, then grab it even if you have to pay a bit higher for it. You'll be happy you did.

Cool Gordon. I might pick up a couple drivers. Do you happen to know what the rookie card is of Dale Earnhardt. Not Junior, but the one that passed away. Also, how about the rookie card of Mario Andretti?
Added a man that is a Hall of Famer to all the free agents. This man laid the initial groundwork against baseball's reserve clause. Above average player and because of his off the field activities, I've chosen to put him in my collection as someone that changed the game. Actually kind of a hard rookie card to find signed. Nice vintage pen signature, and nice mid grade card. 1958 Topps Curt Flood.
Just got outbid on a 2001 Tiger Woods sign of the times #TW by $10.00. It was a GAI 9.5. Oh well, maybe next time, I thought I was going to get that one.

Thanks Austin,
Right now the only two basketball I have are MJ and Shaq. However, I do want to get a Bill Russell, Julius Erving, Larry Bird, Magic Johnson, and Kareem Abdul Jabbar. Russell, Bird, Magic and Abdul Jabbar all do an occasional signing, but I've only seen Julius Erving do one and that was just this past year about 40 miles away from me at a radio sponsored event and I missed it because I didn't have his rookie card to get signed at the time. I need to go ahead and buy their rookies, so I'll be prepared when they pop up signing. Who all do you have in your basketball rc collection?

So I have started out collecting high end PSA rcs for basketball HOFers. And in the past few years I started gearing for auto rooks.
Notable autos -
1973-74 Topps #135 Bob McAdoo RC
1969-70 Topps #10 Nate Thurmond RC
1969-70 Topps #55 Dave Bing RC
1990-91 Hoops #248 Drazen Petrovic RC
And I have a few more coming, I will put pics up soon
I have a collection of a bunch of PSA 10 and PSA 9 rookies, including Gervin, Dr J, Ewing, hakeem etc. I am wondering if it is worth it to crack down for signing? do you think it is risky that it might get those grades after signing?

Austin >>
Austin,
I would not expect to receive the same grade on the card after it was signed as before it was signed. Way too many things can happen between the time you crack it out, and the time it is signed. Even in the most controlled environment, athletes can bump a corner, drop it and it dings, jam a corner shoving it back in a toploader, etc., etc. etc. It could become creased if not cracked out properly, etc. I wouldn't crack a vintage 9 or 10 unless it was such a common 9 or 10 that it held not much of a price premium over an 8 or 9. I wouldn't hesitate in cracking modern 9's as generally they aren't that pricey to begin with and then you'd have a really nice signed card if all goes well.
Otherwise, if you are a gambling man, you can try your luck and see what your results might be, but if you do it, I would not do it with any realistic expectation of achieving the same grade, although we've all seen that PSA's grading is not consistent, so you might get luckier the second time around and score higher.
Added the Golden Bear tonight. 1971 Barratt’s Jack Nicklaus already PSA/DNA slabbed. I got it in a lot that also had a 1971 Barratt’s Tony Jacklin PSA/DNA in it as well from the Masro auction tonight. Even the most casual of golf fans know of Nicklaus, but I admit I had to do an internet search on Jacklin and this is what I found from his site so it’s fitting they go into my collection together:
The 1969 Ryder Cup eventually hinged on the last singles match between Jack Nicklaus and Tony Jacklin. History will record that Jacklin somehow ignored the pressures of the moment and holed a 50-foot eagle putt on the 17th hole at Royal Birkdale Golf Club against Jack Nicklaus to remain alive in their match. "It was one of the putts of my life, one of those you dream about making," said Jacklin. "You rarely hole a putt of that length when you really, really need it. For it to happen at that time was idyllic." With the outcome of the match hanging in the balance, Jack Nicklaus conceded a two-foot putt to Tony Jacklin on the last green resulting in the first tie in the matches' history with the U.S. retaining the Cup. The pair left the green with their arms around each other's shoulders. That singular act of charity is roundly considered one of the grandest gestures of sportsmanship ever.
Added a 1979 Topps Wayne Gretzky PSA/DNA slabbed and graded a 6. I already have an OPC version but I wanted to pick up the Topps as well since my collection is primarily Topps. Bought this one as part of a package deal which included this 1951 Gordon Howe Parkhurst PSA 1. I'm going to bust it out and have it signed by Howe at the end of this month at a show, not a real attractive card, but I didn't want to spend a whole lot for a better example. Decent deal for the pair once the Microsoft cashback was factored in.
A bold, beautiful signature from one of the giants of 20th century American sports. Wow. Everything you show us is cool, but items like this and the Aaron card are on a higher plane.
<< <i> Added 1958 Jim Brown. Had it signed last weekend at a show in Virginia. [/Q Mike, that is one beauty of a sig. Another awesome addition to your collection. I'm sure that has to be a new favorite for you.
very nice recent pickups, can't wait to see the howe signed

collecting RAW Topps baseball cards 1952 Highs to 1972. looking for collector grade (somewhere between psa 4-7 condition). let me know what you have, I'll take it, I want to finish sets, I must have something you can use for trade.

<< <i>Your stuff is just too good. THis is a beauty!
Where was the show at ? >>
Austinchau,
The show was a Collectors' Showcase of America show and was at Chantilly, VA. They put on occasional shows I believe and you can find them on the web. They have pretty good guests although this time they did have some cancellations.
I realize this addition is not a Hall of Famer and never will be and probably should be in the Hall of Shame, but I remember saving up as teenager to purchase the 1984 Fleer Update set strictly to get a Dr. K card, one of my boyhood idols. He threw his career away, but for a couple years, he was the most dominant force I've ever seen play the game. Added to my collection as a fond memory of one of my favorite players of my youth, 1984 Fleer Update Dwight Gooden.
Tonight, I received back an order of 93 cards from PSA/DNA, 81 of them were for my signed rookie collection and 12 were for another board member. I'm pleased that all 81 that I sent, passed authentication. I have scanned them all into the first post in this thread. Large scan warning, will take some time to load.
The handful that I have left that are not in slabs, will be slabbed later this year. I just didn't have them to send in on this past order.
Very cool to see how things have progressed! If you think you might be doing another submission at some point in the future, lmk. I've been debating what to do with the unslabbed cards I have (PSA/DNA or BGS/JSA), but I might be able to help fill up any volume levels you may need for your submission level (if you don't have enough cards on your own).

PSA just listed a great special, only $10.00 for autographed cards, check it out at the link. That could have saved me a lot of $$$, but I'm not griping, they've been good and easy to work with and most of mine wouldn't have been eligible anyway because they are over $100.00:
My next submission is only going to be about 6 cards and I've already got a deal with them on those to do them for me, so I can't piggyback on that one because of a voucher issue.
However, SCHR1st, if you are not a member and want to get in on the special, I'd be happy to send them in for you under my collector number so you can get the $10.00 rate, just PM me.
<< <i>Mike, Love this thread and love checking out your newest pick-ups! Make sure you keep this going! >>

I utilize a site called signingshotline.com that lets me know when signings are coming up for the people I'm interested in. It lists most signings in the USA and is a great tool to find in person and TTM pay signings. It is subscription only as well, and spring for the Deluxe membership of about $29.95. That gets you discounts off the signing fees and some guys will only sign at shows so this is your chance to get them. You can even show only basketball HOF'ers if you wish. Check it out if you get a chance. I've gotten a lot of my rookie cards signed utilizing that site. Well worth the cost, and if you use the discounts, it will pay for the membership in no time. You can also setup a list of 10 names there, and if any of the 10 do a future signing, you will receive an email from them with a link to the signing information. Really nice tool.
