Today is golf day for me. Added golf legend, Arnold Palmer. Card issued later in his career, but from what I've been able to find out, it's his rookie card. 1990 Pro Set PSA/DNA slabbed.

In the spirit of the Olympics, I added tonight Olympic legend card from 1991 Mary Lou Retton. I was a 13/14 year old teenage male when she captivated the country in 1984. At that time, my teenage hormones definitely made her a "Legend" in my eyes image My collection is a little eclectic at times, but that's what makes it personal. I know you can't compare Mary Lou Retton to Hank Aaron, Arnold Palmer etc., but I collect what I like and she makes the cut. A true American legend to me. Way to go, Mary Lou!!!

Is Aaron still doing signings through Steiner? I didn't see him on their exclusives list or any scheduled signings with them in the future.

Great pickup on the Piazza. If you still want to keep it in the Topps family, you could always get a 1992 Bowman Piazza signed, since Topps owns Bowman.

Back to the basics again, added another potential HOF 1989 Topps autographed Craig Biggio

I'm not sure about Aaron, I know when I asked Steiner earlier in the year, they told me they planned on having him at least one time in 08, and that was the signing that already passed. I don't see him scheduled anywhere else either.

Added a more vintage Arnold Palmer tonight to the collection a PSA/DNA slabbed 1978 Sports Deck Division. At least this one is from his days on tour and not on the Sr. Tour like the Pro Set one.

<< <i>Added a veteran tonight that I believe will get in one day compliments of his longevity, above average career and veteran's committee. 1960 Topps Jim Kaat, this card has issues as you can see with the clipped corners, but will fill space fine until I can find a better one. This one is used as insurance in case I can't find a nice one before he dies. I probably would have passed if the price hadn't been so attractive, $6.50 delivered from an online store so hopefully they actually still have it in stock and their website is updated. My cheapest one so far!!!

I just saw this... He signs TTM so you might want to try that. I may even have two. I'll check and let you know.

Added another potential HOF today. 1990 Topps Sammy Sosa, passed PSA/DNA quick opinion. I figure he gets in eventually, had over 600 home runs, albeit a corked bat incident and all during the years of steroids. Bad scan, but I'll update it once I get the card in hand.

I have been trying for a topps sosa dna for well over 6 months, and did 2 quick opinions that failed.. I am surprised they were even willing to make an opinion with that scan....anyway congrats....

I finally picked these two up recently, as I am not limiting myself for topps only....bummer i got another cracked slab though, but the seller did refund me $25.

Added one of my old favorite Rangers over the years, potential HOF 1987 Topps Rafael Palmeiro. He has pretty good credentials, just have to wait and find out how the steroid issue impacts his chances long term. I've been using the PSA Set Registry subset called future HOF rookies to help determine what current or recently retired guys I should add.

There's a Thome Bowman Rookie auto already slabbed on ebay right now. I am pretty sure he will get in, and he doesn't have a 1991 topps....
  • thenavarrothenavarro Posts: 7,497 ✭✭✭
Thanks HOFautos for the heads up. I just went there and bought it.

Added future HOF member and member of the 500 HR Club, 1991 Bowman PSA/DNA slabbed Jim Thome.

Added another future potential HOF (at least according to PSA Set Registry, future HOF rookies) , Fred McGriff, 1986 Donruss already PSA/DNA. He doesn't have an 86 Topps I don't think, so I went with this one.

Nice Mcgriff, always loved that card. No 86 topps either not even inthe traded set
  • thenavarrothenavarro Posts: 7,497 ✭✭✭
Finally back to the HOF'ers. Not his Fleer update, but his first Topps card and considered a rookie by most, 1985 Topps Kirby Puckett already PSA/DNA slabbed.

I'm a fan of the Crime dog Mike - nice pickup.

And the Puckett is one I don't have - also a nice pickup - congratulations.

    A really superb collection!

    Hi Jeff

I don't mind at all. I love seeing nice signed rookies. What did the Koufax set you back? Mine was $792.90 from a Mastro auction, and mine doesn't look to be nearly in as good as shape as yours.

Added another potential HOF this AM, 1990 Topps already PSA/DNA'd Larry Walker.

.313 lifetime BA, 5 time All Star, 7 time gold glove, 1997 NL MVP, 3x Silver Slugger award.

May get in, may not, but I figured I'd add him while I have the chance.

am looking to buy the following autographed rookie cards. All should be relatively inexpensive except for the Ichiro

    1988 Alomar Topps Traded
    1989 Topps Sheffield
    1989 Topps Vizquel
1991 Topps Traded, Topps Stadium Club, or Bowman Jeff Bagwell
1991 UD final edition Pedro Martinez
    1992 Fleer Jeff Kent
    1992 Bowman Trevor Hoffman
    1994 Bowman Posada
    1995 Bowman Andruw Jones
    2000 Bowman's Best Johann Santana
2001 Finest Suzuki or Topps Suzuki

If you have any of them available for sale please send me a scan and your asking price. I'm a buyer if your price is right and the card/auto is nice.

Added another potential HOF tonight, 1997 Donruss Signature Series David Ortiz. He doesn't have a 1997 Topps so I went with this one. By the way, what's up with his name change from David Arias to David Ortiz?

This one is not Topps, but I couldn't pass it up for $17.30 delivered. I'll get the Topps version when I run across it, but this one will be a nice extra. Future potential HOF 1988 Donruss Roberto Alomar.

Very nice Koufax rookie! I'm a bit surprised as to how many signed Kofax rookie cards I've seen over the years, and almost all with vintage signatures. Guess it was a popular card to get signed back in the day.
    Who is Rober Maris?
  • Re: David Arias to David Ortiz

Just a flash of international ignorance, really. Like many Hispanic players, he has a couple of "last names" chained together: David Ortiz Arias.

When he originally signed and went through the minors, the powers that be thought Arias was his nom of record, since it came at the end of his full name. In fact, Ortiz was the proper option. Eventually, he corrected them. That's it.

Though I do like the conspiracy theory that says he changed names so no one would remember his time as a Seattle Mariners prospect. *grin*
Nolan Ryan & Edgar Martinez are my favorite players...

Jeff Kent? Is the HOF you refer to the Baseball Hall of Fame? Or the pornstache Hall of Fame?

Added a TTM autograph today of golf great Lee Trevino on a 1981 Donruss rookie. I'm not sure yet, but I think this one might be an autopen, the consistent width of the stroke throughout the signature gives that indication. I haven't found an autopen match yet, but I think that's probably what it is. Took 83 days and here's the address if you want to give it a try.

Mike, where did yo get the Trevino? I'm a bit skeptical. It doesn't look like the 7-8 Trevino's I've got in person.
  • thenavarrothenavarro Posts: 7,497 ✭✭✭
    VitoCo,

It's a through the mail that I got by mailing to his address. I've gotten him in person before about 15 years ago as well at a Senior's tourney in Dallas and it has a different slant to it if I remember correctly. The slant on the card matches several PSA/DNA and James Spence ones, but I think they are wrong on their authentications of Trevino unless he has totally changed his slant over the years. Here's some of the PSA/DNA, James Spence examples where the sig looks like the one on my card, but I don't think it's good, and I don't think the ones that I linked to below are good either unless Trevino has changed his slant over the years.

Yeah, he has definitely changed. If you look on this players flag he's a lot more all over the place - and he wasn't in a rush at all when he signed this - and he was an early signer so he wasn't trying to sign around anyone. Did you quick opinion it?

    Multi Flag w/ Trevino

I'm actually more concerned about the LEE than the TREVINO

    Lee on a ball

It's quite possible that he is just a funky signer - signs things differently every time. Other golfers are like that too - because they sign so much. Stewart Cink and Retief Goosen can be different on any given day.

Added a nice upgrade today. A 1979 Topps Ozzie Smith. Used to be a PSA 9 OC that I got from a fellow board member and cracked it out to send to a fundraiser in Evansville, IN that took place on August 16. I got it signed in exchange for a $50.00 donation to fight prostate cancer so we both won. The signature and card are in much better shape than the filler Smith I had before. Smith has been remarkably tough to find compared to most of the other ones for me.

    Dan,

I don't have a site or photobucket. My signed rookies are located on page 1 of this thread and that's the closest I come to a photobucket.

Added another signed rookie of potential HOF Jack Morris. I had his regular 1978 Topps signed rookie (the one where he appeared with 3 others on the same card), but then I found this 1978 Topps Burger King card and thought since it was the same year, and made by Topps, that I liked it much better since it's a solo card. Nice bold signature as well.

Raw: Tony Gonzalez (low #'d cards, and especially 1/1's) and Steve Young.

This guy has an uphill battle to climb to make it to the Hall. He seems to have tanked it after getting a large contract, but if he gets the hunger back, he has the potential. Added 1995 Bowman Andruw Jones already PSA/DNA slabbed.

Added HOF lock 1989 Topps Traded Ken Griffey, Jr. already PSA/DNA'd stickered on the back. I already had the 1989 Upper Deck autographed, but since my collection is primarily Topps, I got this one as well.
