    I love those cards.

Choice of nice condition card and not a "beater" really adds to the final product.

Depending on the vagaries of the United States Postal Service, today may be a big day for the graygator set. The early delivery brought the appetizer.

    Hi Bob,
Nice cards! Here's another one from the recent purchase:

d@mn duane, another solid 52 and ballpoint!

    hadn't started looking for hoyt...

    was she difficult?

and are ya trying to stay w/ ball point or just so happened on these two 52s?

i kinda prefer it, especially on the cards pre-sharpie existence.

Until a signed 1949 Bowman Satchel Paige surfaces, this card, his first Topps, will have to do:

To answer your question Bob, I haven't consciously looked for ballpoint sigs on the cards. To be honest, if I found one signed in crayon, and it was rare enough, I'd be happy to own it. image

    or 48 leaf.

for an unsigned 48 leaf to surface is sorta rare, throw in that it has to be signed, well I for one will not be holding the proverbial breath.

I thought both of these might also be delivered Friday, which would have made for an even bigger day than it was. But they're here now.

a lil early, but figured it was time to add this, now that the retirement hype is over and it's still pre-hof:

Nice card. Do you think it is a good time to buy Jeter rookies? Do you think theyll go up years from now when he is inducted into the hall of fame? Just wondering cause i have some jeter rookies for sale and i was considering just holding onto them and picking some more up slowly over the years, with the thought process of making a profit on them when he is inducted.

not really in them for the investment aspect, but the two main things that motivate prices to move north:

    1. hof induction
    2. death

other would be months leading up to a major record (ie. all time home runs) and hype. but of course how well did those 2 reasons pan out for all those mcgwire/sosa/bonds cards?

it would seem that if you planned on "investing" in them, now would be the time. however, prices seem to settle back down soon after the hof ceremonies are over.

so timing would be key, i assume.

a brighter strategy is to go for the highest graded example within your budget vs. a bunch of 8s.

read that thread on the main board in regards to the same 1970 ryan 10 selling for $13K more in only 2 years....

Did you request no qualifiers? I could easily see that as a 4.5(ST)

i did and that makes perfect sense actually...

That Reggie Jackson RC is very nice for the grade.
"My father would womanize, he would drink. He would make outrageous claims like he invented the question mark. Sometimes he would accuse chestnuts of being lazy. The sort of general malaise that only the genius possess and the insane lament. Our childhood was typical. Summers in Rangoon, luge lessons. In the spring we'd make meat helmets. When we were insolent we were placed in a burlap bag and beaten with reeds - pretty standard really."

few back from psa. a few head scratchers both ways and i am finding that they seem to be a tad bit harsher on signed cards however definitely more lenient w/ the half grades...

Nice results there. How do you think the auto affects the price as compared to a non-auto card in the same grade? Are they just different beasts? I know a few months back I was surprised when PWCC had two different Banks, both graded a 5 and pretty similar looking cards, one auto and one non-auto, and the non-auto sold for $100 more. Auto and Non-Auto.

Is this just the magic of the registry, and caused by not being able to use autographed cards for the regular registry, even when the card has a numerical grade? (Which is a policy I don't really understand).

Picked up a Campy 4.5 Just love this card, and am actually digging the 49 Bowmans more than I thought I would when I started this project. Which is good, since there are 10 of them. Is there consensus on a preference for the Bowman or Leaf when there's a choice? I think I'll probably be doing the Bowmans for most if not all of those.

  • DanBessetteDanBessette Posts: 6,421 ✭✭✭
    That Campy is killer!

I'm not working on the set, but I'll answer your question anyway. I prefer the Bowmans over Leaf, hands down.

<< <i>Is there consensus on a preference for the Bowman or Leaf when there's a choice? >>

The Leafs were actually issued in 1949, not 1948. So the '48 Bowmans are the true rookie cards for Musial, Spahn and Kiner.

  • i actually prefer the leafs but can see why valid arguments why the bowmans might be preferred.

but for me, it's the leafs. granted they are a year later, but couple the color, design and images themselves w/ the overall scarcity of them and it's a no brainer for me that the leafs are my choice.

The Leafs I like better aesthetically are the ones with 48 Bowman counterparts and so not the true rookies. The others I like the look of the Bowman's better, and they are cheaper, so that's probably where I'll end up.

Added Nellie Fox on 5x ebay bucks day.

Couple of Red Sox. With Rice I have 68-present done, which astounds me from where I was 2 years ago, owning basically none of these. Will probably sit back and reflect on what I have for a while before adding any more.

Extremely excited and lucky to get this one from member BPorter26. Was going to add a 4 of this card, but there no way I could find one that looks this good.

    Hi guys,

I just noticed that Mike Piazza was added to the 1st Ballot HOF set. Wasn't this his second year of eligibility or am I way off?

    Thanks for your help.
  • DarinDarin Posts: 7,211 ✭✭✭✭✭
It was Piazzas' fourth year on the HOF ballot.

Only Griffey Jr. this year was elected on his first ballot.
