<< <i>Is your plan now to expand to the entire post war HOF RC set, not just first ballot guys? >>
When I first started, I was collecting every HOFer, but it was getting expensive as some are extremely high priced (Mathews) and others I didn't even know who they were. The first ballot set was fun... I might upgrade a few like the Banks and Robinson...or upgrade my Clemente set... Or start a low grade (but nicely centered) Mantle set.
Also posted in the July pick-up thread on the main board, but I closed out the month with Ernie. Happy with the top to bottom centering here, and I actually prefer this card shifted to the left a bit so that Ernie's ear and rear are about equal distance from the edge of the card. Excited to have this one.
Thanks, Dan. I'm finding the 75s tougher than I thought they would be. Passed on a centered Rice last week because of a weird discoloration on the bottom, but card still went for well more than VCP so I probably wouldn't have gotten it anyway. And the 76 Eckersley is really tough to find reasonably centered and without print defects in a 7 or 8.
Finally upgraded a few of my rookies and added a few. Here are some of my recent pickups! I am also looking for a 1964 niekro psa 7 and a 1975 carter psa 8 if anyone has one to sell or trade please let me know.
and picked up a future hall of famer

really dig that frank robinson card. been looking myself and have come to understand the issues w. that card in general and certainly looks of a better deserving grade than a 5!
From the National: (To be honest, I thought I'd eventually own these in at least PSA 6 but even mid-grades are soaring out of reach (for me) at this point. I was happy to be able to add these to my collection in decent-looking "5's".)
Aaron and Clemente both look great! I hear you on rising prices. My plan is one big card (for me, $1000+) per year and a lesser-priced card or two per month on this set, but I'm starting to think I'll have to buy the big boys (especially Mantle and Mays) pretty soon or I'll never be able to finish.
Paleo- I especially like the looks on the Clemente. Congrats.
I don't do this set, but love to follow the thread and see the great pick ups you guys make. I'm more a football guy and can attest to what graygator said. Price are going through the roof for HOF RC cards. Especially for those from the 80's. Just to use round numbers, PSA 10 RC's of J. Montana, J. Rice are bring over $12,000 each. Elway, Marino over $7,000 each. And even a Walter Jones 1997 SP Authentic RC in PSA 10, brings $500- $1,000.
I believe this is due to a slightly better economy as well as new money looking for "alternative assets" to invest in. Saw this article from one of my investing websites about the recent Mantle prices in the Goldin auction Record 1952 Mantle price
When Wall street starts printing articles about card prices, you know the market is heating up.
On the Robinson, there's an indentation up around his cap about the size of a fingernail. Not sure it rises even to the level of a crease. Can see it, but really only if you are looking for it. According to the previous owner it happened while cracking out of a 7ST holder to wipe off the wax. Without that indentation it's an easy 7. But I guess it's accurately graded. An instance where the grading standards work in favor of the collector in my view.
On Murray, I finally gave up on centering and looked for one that was decent but had no PD, since the PD is just as bad as the centering on that card.
That Frank Thomas, and the Bird, Erving, Magic, are ridiculous.
Kille centering on that Billy Williams 7. Very nice.
"My father would womanize, he would drink. He would make outrageous claims like he invented the question mark. Sometimes he would accuse chestnuts of being lazy. The sort of general malaise that only the genius possess and the insane lament. Our childhood was typical. Summers in Rangoon, luge lessons. In the spring we'd make meat helmets. When we were insolent we were placed in a burlap bag and beaten with reeds - pretty standard really."
will admit, she was kind of a toughie to find centered...most were significantly oc or beaters >>
It's hard enough to find a lot of these cards with reasonable centering anyway. Throw in a requirement that they are autographed as well and I'm amazed you've found as many nice ones in as short a period of time as you have.
i love that 66 palmer card. he was never really my guy growing up, but it's just something about that card and pose that I've just come to appreciate more and more as i age...great score!!!
i appreciate the comments and the realization of the signed part as well.
it really is difficult but extremely gratifying to finally nail one down that i'm content with!
Now, that Mathews is sweet, and pop report says only 4. Wow. Very nice! (And I hope Bob doesn't know where you live because he's going to be beating down your door!)

thanks dan! I think so as well. she has been on the desk ever since she arrived!!!
brett has jsa sticker on back.
and this card doesn't look like much, but he was one of the color barrier breakers w/ cincinnati.
never had an official rookie card produced and while technically not in the hof...
anyone enduring such a situation during those times is always welcomed in my collection of hof'ers!

***not sure why this text was removed below. maybe it happened to strike a nerve w/ said "advertiser" but will repost again and remove the prob-lem:
btw: and just fyi to whoever consigned those hof signed rooks w/ a consignor....
i made you an extremely fair offer on a few of those. maybe it was fwd'ed to you. maybe it wasn't.
just know that i will not be participating in any of them once they go to auction...
no coincidence they all of a sudden just appeared for sale.
best of luck when they get shilled up and don't end up getting paid for...
not by me as i simply do not participate in his problematic auctions. haven't for years!
just saying and best of luck.

is there a crease...she deserves a much better grade!!
and speaking of centering beasts, realizing what the eddie murray card is like....

Man alive !!!! those signed beauties are phenomenal.

passed on a ton of banks cards due to t/b centering. finally settled on her. i'm a fan of the early ball point pen as well....
will admit, she was kind of a toughie to find centered...most were significantly oc or beaters
