I hear ya, Matt. For the record, I'm not saying Beltre did or didn't juice. I just know that he's suspected of it and that's something that will cost him votes.

The survey I received from PSA asks the following question:
1. We received a request to add Adrian Beltre – 1997 Bowman’s Best #117 to the Future HOF Rookie Players set. In consideration to all registrants in this category, we would like to poll you on this request. Please respond with your “yes” or “no” vote to by September 8th.
I thought Bowman Chrome was better (not having looked at the prices of either in years), and that has been confirmed by a few people.
I've just sent PSA the following email:
<< <i>There is a problem here: the yes/no vote is whether to add Beltre's 1997 Bowman's Best card. However, that is not generally accepted as his best rookie card. His 1997 Bowman Chrome is widely considered to be the best.
For people who believe Beltre should be in the set, but that it should be a different card included, they have to vote no as the poll is written.
I believe the poll should be withdrawn, and a new poll sent out, with 2 questions in it: 1st, whether Beltre should be added to the set, and 2nd, which rookie card if he is. >>
This thread has inspired me to begin this set. I started five weeks ago and am really happy to have just won this eBay auction. I grew up a Cubs fan and was fortunate enough to meet him along with my two sons while we lived in Chicago from 2011-2013 at one of the Sun Times shows in Rosemont. Not the highest grade but the centering is well above average both front and back.
I have a bunch at the post office to pick up and will scan as they come in.
Thanks for looking and keep up the motivating additions.
Welcome to the club! That Banks is very nice. When I was looking for one, I grew impatient and bought before I found one centered like I like. Good job.
Thank you both for the comments. Of course I should have stopped looking after I found this one but there is a slightly better centered PSA5 right now that is ending tomorrow (in case you are looking to upgrade pdub).
Ernie was very nice when we met him. The nicest Cub we met that day was the Hawk. Ryno was a disappointment as he seemed annoyed which I felt bad about for my boys. I had met him in Texas right before he went into the HOF and he was awesome.
My favorite experience thus far with meeting ball players was when we met Willie Mays a few years back. Here is the video for those interested.
I'm sure my level of purchases will level off over the next few months but I have picked up 15/85 cards so far. I've picked up 8 of those on these boards and am very appreciative to them for their contributions.
I expect this to take years to complete but I'm looking forward to the journey.
How is your set coming along? Any recent pickups?
I'll be sure to add pickups as I go.
Thanks again for the comments.

<< <i>How is your set coming along? Any recent pickups? >>
I'm going backwards on the set right now actually, I just traded 10 Post War HOFers from my set for a card I wouldn't ever be able to own otherwise. A lot of what I traded was 60-70's HOFers that I can repurchase down the road. So no recent additions to the set.
Matt I collect: 80’s Rookies and 86 Fleer Basketball
That is the good thing about this set in particular is the relative liquidity of most of the cards whether you are looking to buy/sell/trade. At the beginning, I wasn't as focused on centering but after seeing this thread and DM23HOF's drinking induced pickups, I knew I had to up my game. I still want as good as registration as I can afford but the corners and edges have regressed in terms of importance. I did make one exception for this when I picked up the 49 bowman jackie which is probably 60/40 or 65/35 L/R. I let the registration dictate. I can't wait to go to the pods office today as I have 5 beauties to pick up (54 Kaline, 68 Ryan, 49 Robinson, 55 Koufax and 73 Schmidt). It's going to be a good day.
One thing I was curious on is how everyone here stores/displays their set (complete or in-progress). I would love to see displays if anyone has them.

I've always tinkered with this set (I can't stay focused ), but have recently been really enjoying working on it. Here is my latest (and greatest to date) pick up for it:
Very nice Jackie. I just picked up mine recently as well. I am laser focused on the Post War BB HOF RC set but once I'm done, I'm going to start 1948-1955 Bowman registry sets. It will be much easier after all of the HOF RC's are out of the way...
Matt Looking for post-war hof rc's, raw or graded. Successful dealings: grote15, wilkiebaby11, BPorter26 and gregmo32.
adridgemj - 48 Bowman was actually my first registry set to complete. The HOF RCs in that set made a nice start to this one. This project will be a long term project, but, once done, like you I hope to do some of the other early Bowman sets. '51 is one of my all time favorite sets.
I've decided to put some real focus into this set. Here's what I've got so far; I am going with Pre-War and any slab or grade as long as I love the card. I am also including a few players who are in my personal Hall Of Fame
I was made an offer on the Zeenut Batting Joe D that I could not refuse, and basically that one sale has been financing all my recent pickups, from the 73 Ryan to the 52 Mays to the centered Mantles. It was a card I won't find again but I already had Joe D represented with the 41 Play Ball so was able to pull the trigger.
First time poster, but have been building my Hall of Fame rookie sets for about a year....I have two really main questions that perhaps the fine folks on this thread can help with....first - I'm trying to figure out why the Phil Rizzuto 1948 Bowman card isn't part of the post-war rookie registry...I think PSA recognizes that as his official rookie, but I must be wrong....did he have a pre-war issue that they consider the "true" rookie and therefore Scooter is left off? ANd my second question is....how the heck do they decide what players make the "Future Hall of Fame" rookie set....most of the modern cards I understand...but how is Jim Kaat still on there, while others who have similar fates for their HOF chances...like Lou Whitaker or Bob Grich....left off? And what's with Juan Gonzalez hanging around....do they ever clean the set up? Just curious as I am still pretty new to this whole set registry thing.
Matt C and Carl, welcome to,the set, it's my favorite set. I ebb and flow in building this set, but I always come back to this one. Look forward to seeing what you pick up.
Matt I collect: 80’s Rookies and 86 Fleer Basketball
The fact that someone requested Dwight Evans for the Future HOF'ers set is crazy. Evans was a very good ballplayer, but he's NOWHERE on the HOF radar. He fell off the ballot in 1999 when he received just 3.6% of the vote. That's a far cry from the 75% needed for induction. Evans was also nowhere to be found on the last Expansion Era ballot in 2014, which included:
Bobby Cox Tony La Russa Joe Torre Dave Concepción Steve Garvey Tommy John Billy Martin Marvin Miller Dave Parker Dan Quisenberry Ted Simmons George Steinbrenner
Requests like this are just a waste of PSA's time. Sorry if that sounds harsh, but it's true.
"My father would womanize, he would drink. He would make outrageous claims like he invented the question mark. Sometimes he would accuse chestnuts of being lazy. The sort of general malaise that only the genius possess and the insane lament. Our childhood was typical. Summers in Rangoon, luge lessons. In the spring we'd make meat helmets. When we were insolent we were placed in a burlap bag and beaten with reeds - pretty standard really."

I wasn't a fan of Parker or Murphy getting added to the set either, for the same reason I voted no for Evans. My issue is that he's not even being considered for the HOF by the voters. So how could he possibly get in?

Latest addition…even with all those eBay bucks floating around, I couldn't find anything that was priced appropriately to pull the trigger on. Ended up buying this at auction.

Welcome to the boards, Carl. In regard to your first inquiry, Rizzuto has a 1941 Double Play card, which is correctly recognized as his rookie. As for the Future HOF set, Katt is likely to get voted in by the Expansion Era voters in December. He came the closest among the players who didn't get elected the last time Expansion Era committee voted (12 votes were needed for induction):
Candidate Category Votes Percent Ron Santo Player 15 93.80% Jim Kaat Player 10 62.50% Gil Hodges Player 9 56.30% Minnie Miñoso Player 9 56.30% Tony Oliva Player 8 50% Buzzie Bavasi Executive < 3 < 18.8% Ken Boyer Player < 3 < 18.8% Charlie Finley Executive < 3 < 18.8% Allie Reynolds Player < 3 < 18.8% Luis Tiant Player < 3 < 18.8%
Personally, I hate Kaat as a HOF candidate. He was never dominant and a classic case of a stat accumulator. But I'm not a voter, so I can't turn a blind eye to what they're likely to do. As for the others on the set, I'd boot Rose, Parker, Murphy, Palmeiro, A. Jones, Tejada and Santana. Rose is ineligible for HOF induction, and if that's ever overturned he won't get in anyway. Parker and Murphy are nowhere on the HOF radar among the voters, Palmeiro and Tejada had their chances killed by PED revelations, Jones tanked the latter part of his career, and Santana burned out too quickly due to injury. As for players like McGwire, Sosa, Clemens and Bonds, I think it's too early to tell if their chances are killed forever.
"My father would womanize, he would drink. He would make outrageous claims like he invented the question mark. Sometimes he would accuse chestnuts of being lazy. This discussion around Kaat or other "stat accumulators" has me potentially rethinking my focus on this set. I'm still after PW HOF BB rookies but am thinking of converting my focus to the 1st ballot group. If you compare the list of 41 to the list of 85 you can definitely see that some of the additional 44 are just not at or near the same level in terms of their place in the game. Anyone else change their focus in a similar vein after starting this set? All of the big cards are still represented but this means that I won't have to drop over $1k on cards like the 1948 Newhouser. No disrespect to him or his fans. This would mean I would be selling 12 of my recent pickups (actually 11 because I'm a sandberg fan so I will hold on to that one for my PC). I'll be sure to offer them on the B/S/T for the set registry completists that may need them before going the eBay route if I decide to pursue this change. I hate to make a change 60 days in but the first ballot list just represent the best in the game over the last 65 years or so. I realize to some this is probably splitting hairs a bit. Just my thoughts.

I was just thinking the same thing. It hurts me to spend a lot on cards of players I don't know all that well.
If you sold the non 1st ballot you could finish the set with a 3 Mantle and probably 7's for the 67 rookies you have remaining. I still have a long way to go but the journey is the fun part. Good luck either way and it is nice to hear I'm not totally certifiable in my thinking on this. It is interesting to note that there is a much lower number if people working on the 1st ballot in comparison to the full list.

Thanks for doing the math for me. I was actually going to crunch the numbers. I'm debating on selling to buy the 3 I have left or just continuing what I'm doing. It is pretty cool to say that I will have every single HOF rookie since WWII.
Ok so I recently just added my cards to the registry. I never bought into the hype before but decided to give it a try. I can honestly say I am hooked. Sadly this will feed into my addiction with this set. Currently Im at 56.47% complete. Skyhawks1b's Set Registry
Question: the 1949 Bowman Joe "Flash" Gordon...will this be added to this set at some point?
That's a great start to the set! Enjoy the rest of the chase. As for Gordon, he's not eligible for the set because he has a '41 Double Play card.

<< <i>This discussion around Kaat or other "stat accumulators" has me potentially rethinking my focus on this set. >>

I can honestly say I am hooked. Sadly this will feed into my addiction with this set. Currently Im at 56.47% complete.

Question: the 1949 Bowman Joe "Flash" Gordon...will this be added to this set at some point?
You don't see that one every day. Very very nice.
