<< <i>This discussion around Kaat or other "stat accumulators" has me potentially rethinking my focus on this set. I'm still after PW HOF BB rookies but am thinking of converting my focus to the 1st ballot group. If you compare the list of 41 to the list of 85 you can definitely see that some of the additional 44 are just not at or near the same level in terms of their place in the game. Anyone else change their focus in a similar vein after starting this set? All of the big cards are still represented but this means that I won't have to drop over $1k on cards like the 1948 Newhouser. No disrespect to him or his fans. This would mean I would be selling 12 of my recent pickups (actually 11 because I'm a sandberg fan so I will hold on to that one for my PC). I'll be sure to offer them on the B/S/T for the set registry completists that may need them before going the eBay route if I decide to pursue this change. I hate to make a change 60 days in but the first ballot list just represent the best in the game over the last 65 years or so. I realize to some this is probably splitting hairs a bit. Just my thoughts. >>
I was just thinking the same thing. It hurts me to spend a lot on cards of players I don't know all that well. >>
So I'm back to thinking about selling my non-first ballot HOFers. I have 29 or 30 cards that I would be selling. My first thought is to put them on the BST with my prices and see how that goes for a little bit, and then after about a week or so, I would put the rest on eBay with appropriate BINs. I'm not in a terrible hurry to sell the cards as I only need 3 cards for the First Ballot HOFer Set. Any other suggestions?
Just got this Reggie rookie back from PSA. I was hoping for a PSA 7 but all things considered I cannot complain. I was very pleased with the centering on this card. It is hard to find them this well centered.
"My father would womanize, he would drink. He would make outrageous claims like he invented the question mark. Sometimes he would accuse chestnuts of being lazy. The sort of general malaise that only the genius possess and the insane lament. Our childhood was typical. Summers in Rangoon, luge lessons. In the spring we'd make meat helmets. When we were insolent we were placed in a burlap bag and beaten with reeds - pretty standard really."
Hello all, I started this set fairly recently and it seems that without a real strategy for completion it would be simultaneously easy to go overboard and hard to maintain momentum since it's such a beast of a set for someone who does not have unlimited funds. I'm curious how other folks go about attacking this set. With so many cards from different years, each with their own issues (tough centering, print defects, etc.), it seems impossible to be looking at everything at once and make informed decisions. So do you have a strategy for breaking down the set into chunks? How many different cards are you actively looking for at any given time? Have you set a goal to complete the set in a certain amount of time, or is it just an ongoing journey?
So far I started last year with the latest inductees and, other than a few key cards that were calling me, am working my way back in time looking at listings for 5-7 cards at a time. But do others try to acquire favorite players first, cheaper cards first or the more important, expensive cards first, or just buy a card when it happens to cross your path, meets your criteria, and you want it?
Regardless, it's a fun set, and I'm happy to be trying to tackle it. I love looking at all the cards in the thread, so here are my two latest pickups:
For me, it's the journey; a marathon, not a sprint. I registered my rookie set 9 years ago (January 2006) with my first 5 HOFer RCs. There were only 35 or so sets registered then, today there are nearly 200. I now have 70 of the 89 cards, but those last 19 are getting increasingly tough.
My strategy has been to identify the grades for each subset of cards I'd be happy with (e.g. 10's for the latest inductees, 8's for the 1960s HOFers, etc.) and never settle. I can't abide buyer's remorse so if the card doesn't fit my eye, whatever the label says, I pass.
My 2-cents, enjoy chasing the set, and welcome to the boards. (Very nice Aaron for the grade, by the way!)

Thanks for the response. I was figuring this is at least a 10-year project. Sounds like even that may be optimistic! It's fun to have a challenge though.

I've been trying to get at least the grade to match the decade the card is issued (7 for 1970s, etc.). And I've only deviated once, but that was a special circumstance where a PSA 5 '68 Nolan Ryan fell into my lap at my LCS for exactly the amount of my birthday gift money on the day before our son, who we were naming Nolan, was due. So it seemed like that was supposed to be my card--no buyer's remorse there!
<< <i>(Very nice Aaron for the grade, by the way!) >>
Thanks! I'm really happy with that one. Others will I'm sure disagree, but the low centering doesn't bother me on the '54s since there's no top border, and it seems like it's pretty tough to find a surface that clean on a mid-grade Aaron. I'm also happy about that Molitor because it is essentially PD free, which seems like a rarity on an 8 of that card.
I'd also like to upgrade my Bowman Musial from a 5 to a 6 or a 7. Other than that, I just need (and probably will for a long time) a Leaf Paige.

Awesome Seaver! And Smoltz should be easy, so you're really down to needing the Mantle. I prefer his 51 Bowman, but is it true the registry card is 52 Topps?
Those are two very nice cards for the grade, Gator. Great additions.

Two for March. I also noticed last week that I had jumped a spot on the registry because of a "change to the composite definition." I assume that means they adjusted the multipliers on one or more cards, but is there any way to see what part of the composite definition they changed without having a record of the old one and comparing it to the new one?

Picked up these two for April. Just ran into the Carlton at a show and couldn't pass it up. Been looking for a Schmidt for a few months and finally pulled the trigger.

Man, this thread is languishing. I'll show some cards to get it going again. I recently picked up what I think are two of the better looking of the 1949 Bowman cards on a 4x eBay Bucks day.
Predictions on next year besides Griffey? I need to go ahead and pick up some of the eligible guys now since I ended up paying more than I had to for this year's crop by waiting. I guess it might finally be Piazza's year. I think Hoffman should go in to but I bet they make him wait a year or two. Maybe Raines finally?
Piazza makes it this year. Griffey was so good defensively and offensively and was well liked with no suspicions goes in 1st ballot. Bagwell just edges in.

Griffey and Piazza. No one else has a chance. 20+ jumps in percentage of votes (which is what all the other players returning to the ballot would need) just don't happen. I like Hoffman, but he'll likely have to wait a bit. Ditto for Wagner, though his chances of getting in aren't as good as Hoff's.

Here is the last card needed for my Post WWII First Ballot HOFer set. Very excited to complete this set!
I purchased it off ebay, and wasn't 100% happy with the communication with the seller. During the auction, I asked if that was a pin hole in the center top of the card. He said no, but I still thought it was and bid thinking in the back of my head that it was. Once I received the flimsy bubble wrap envelope, with no cardboard protecting it (it was placed in a sandwich bag), it sure does look like a pin hole. Upon inspection of the back, there is a mark where the backside of the pin hole should be, but there is just no actual "hole." Overall, I am very happy with the card…which has now got me thinking of starting the basic Mantle set

The Williams is an upgrade from my PSA 7, and the Niekro is the last 1960s HOFer RC I still needed.
The Roberts was a fair Best Offer from the 'Bay.
And how about a shout-out to this year's class!
That Roberts is awesome!
Quick question for everyone: Was Biggio a 1st ballot HOFer? I thought he wasn't, but he is in the 1st Ballot HOFer Registry.

Biggio got in third ballot.
