Went on a little buying spree this week, now I probably won't pick up another card until next month.

Here's what I got...I'm most excited about the Robin Roberts and the Yaz.

Picked up a few more cards over the Thanksgiving Break.

    Rollie Fingers PSA 8
    Bruce Sutter PSA 9
    Bert Blyleven PSA 6.5

I'll scan the cards once I get them all in hand.

I hope all of your Thanksgivings were great.

I sure love looking at all these HOFers rookie cards. This is one set I would really like to do. I just haven't been able to pull the trigger and start.

    Keep posting them pictures guys

My latest: one upgrade (Yount) and one speculative (maybe Big Hurt gets in 1st ballot, I doubt it but just in case...)

here is the earliest LaRussa I know of.....
anyone else have one of these?? or another LaRussa card that predates the common '64 Topps?

    1963 PC753 J.D. McCarthy Postcard
Tony La Russa (vintage signed, 18 yrs old)

just trying to gauge scarcity.... never seen another but also dont look for newer cards like this often...

Would LaRussa be required for the HOF set if he was inducted as a coach?
I'm thinking no, but I'm not sure.

Thanks. I just picked up a really nice McCovey. I'll post it when I get it in the mail.
  • pdub1819pdub1819 Posts: 1,987 ✭✭✭✭
    My two latest pickups.

I purchased the Molitor from Probstein.

    image

The McCovey I purchased from BBCE. It looks great in hand, the only thing I can find as a reason why it was graded so low, is a small wrinkle near one of the corners.

You're right - that is a killer McCovey. Tough card to find with such stellar centering. Congrats!

Paul.... Fantastic pickups on the Molly and McCovey. The Molly is really clean and McCovey is centered beautifully. I've started to do this set again, but only with first ballot HOFers.

I'm not sure if I've shown this card, but it's one of my favs.

Andy and Jay I appreciate your comments on the Brett.

    Gottcha

Love what u like and collect the same. Me also.
On the bright side u don't need to get a Jack Morris card just in case.

Rules out many of the PED guys also.

Was wondering if U like Cal's traded vs reg Topps. I believe the Traded is not the registry card.
Personally I like the Traded much better
Other than Maddux I can't say anyone else will be a 1st ballot coming up.

Jay, I don't understand the Topps Traded either, but I agree with you it's his best card. I'm thinking first ballot guys going forward will be

    Maddux
    Johnson
    Griffey
    And maybe Glavine

    Bobby,

Your first ballot HOFers is a good idea. I wonder if you could make it it's own registry?
While I'm doing the whole set, I'm not too worried about getting those "other guys" in high grade.
  • shagrotn77shagrotn77 Posts: 5,582 ✭✭✭✭
For the guys who are coming up for election soon, you can add Pedro's name to that list too, Bobby. I also wouldn't be shocked to see Frank Thomas get in with Maddux and Glavine. He was never associated with steroids, and he certainly put up first-ballot type numbers.

It's such a rich yerar for HOF talent all mentioned could easily be 1st ballot.
All will get in for sure. There are more than 4 1st ballot type guys.

I mentioned only Maddux since he's a no brainer. Maybe a high % of the vote reciever from 2013 gets in?
    Biggio and Bags were close.
Maybe some feelings for do or die Morris?
Does Glavine gotta go in with Cox?
    Who knows

The one good thing is most of us are doing the future HOF set so we already have the cards....

I just checked...have not in about a year...there is a 1st ballot HOF set already.
Our old friend Matt Miller is doing it

I'm not sure why the '49 Bowman Jackie Robinson card is part of the First Ballot HOF set when his '48/'49 Leaf is clearly is best rookie. I hate inconsistencies like this.

Andy.... I couldn't agree with you more on this. Even though Cal Ripken's topps traded is the better card his Topps card is the one that should be in this set as well. I believe the same goes with Span and Musial with the bowman. I'm not sure who requested this set for the registry, which was a great idea but they should have used the cards in the Post War HOF set.

Spahn and Musial are 1948 cards for the set. Both have Leaf and Bowman RC's.
What Andy is saying and technically he is right....why 49 bowman on some of the players when the card is supposed to be the most valuable true RC.
The 48 Leafs are far more valuable than Bowman.
George Kell and Larry Doby do not even have 48 bowman cards but have 48 leafs.

    So keep scratching your heads.

I heard there was something about the release time of 49 bowman cards...not sure

Just picked up two more cards using the quadruple eBay bucks from 12/30. Got a Killebrew PSA 5.5 and a Schmidt PSA 8.

Scans when I get them in hand.

Jay, From what I know about the '48 Leaf cards, they actually released them in late 1948 Nov or Dec or early 1949. I feel the '48 Bowman for Spahn and Musial are there true rookie cards. I wish there was consistency with the original post war hof set with the post war 1st ballot set. It's a nice debate either way.

BTW just picked this card up today for my set

  • Love this thread! I started my PSA HOF RC PC a few years ago. I was actually a big time high end auto rookie colector of the modern & current players. When Strasburg went down, i sold all(75-80) of those & funded a good portion of this PC. It made more sense to invest and collect hall of fame rookies than rookies of today who we hope make it years from now. I have since added to the chase.

MY PC consists of PSA HOF RCs...also included are managers, future HOFs(some IMO), & the "would be if not for PED" guys too.

    1980-present are all PSA 10s
    Exceptions:
    80' Henderson(9), 82' TT Ripken(9), 93' SP Jeter(8.5), 94' SP Arod(9)

    Mgr RC cards--80' Larussa(10)

    1970-79 all PSA 8s
    Non HOF- 78' Morris(8), 77' Murphy(8)
    Exceptions:
    71' Blyleven(7.5)

    Mgr RC cards--73' Herzog(7), 77' Lasorda(9), 78' Torre(9), 78' Cox(10)

    1960-69 all PSA 7s
    Lacking:
    67' Seaver
    68' Ryan

    Mgr RC cards: 69' Weaver(7)

1950-59: goal is to avg a 5.5-6 for decade

    So far:
51' Fox SGC 88(sending in this week for crossover)
    51' Ford PSA 4
    51' Irvin PSA 7

So say Maddux, Glavine, and Thomas make it in this year. Which of their rookie cards will get added to the Post War HOF Rookie Card PSA set registry?

    1987 Donruss Maddux?
    1987 Topps Glavine?
    1990 Leaf Thomas?

Glavine is '88 Score. The others you listed are correct. You can always reference the Future HOF set if you're unsure about key rookie card.

Probably within a day or two. I e-mailed Gayle about it yesterday, and she's normally very quick with the additions.
