Anyone interested in trying to convince PSA to clean up the Future HOF Rookies set?

Removing Jerry Sloan won't require a vote, since he made it as a coach, but removing other cards will. There may be arguments for keeping some of them, but Stephon Marbury, for example, isn't ever getting into Springfield without a ticket.

    I'm in.
"My father would womanize, he would drink. He would make outrageous claims like he invented the question mark. Sometimes he would accuse chestnuts of being lazy. The sort of general malaise that only the genius possess and the insane lament. Our childhood was typical. Summers in Rangoon, luge lessons. In the spring we'd make meat helmets. When we were insolent we were placed in a burlap bag and beaten with reeds - pretty standard really."

IMO we should follow the method the football future HOF set has done and develop an initial list here, vote on that on the thread to get a rough idea, and then ask PSA to conduct a formal vote.

Which players do you think should be considered for delisting?

    Here's who I would launch:

    1993 FINEST ANFERNEE HARDAWAY
    1994 FINEST GRANT HILL
    1996 FLEER BEN WALLACE
    1996 TOPPS CHROME STEPHON MARBURY
    1999 TOPPS CHROME RICHARD HAMILTON
    1999 TOPPS CHROME ELTON BRAND
    1999 TOPPS CHROME BARON DAVIS

Here's my take. Guys on top can stay (and I feel I was generous on some of them), and the guys on the bottom gotta go. I know this was discussed before, but Topps Chrome is absolutely not the card of choice for '98. That is SP. I guess that can be addressed (again) way down the road when these guys are eligible.

I agree with everything Shag has said except that I am not as "generous". The future HOF registry should represent a list of players that are very likely to be enshrined eventually but I see most of the players on the current list falling into the good but not great category. I personally don't want to chase a bunch of these cards of guys who are very unlikely to ever make the Hall. I also don't like to prematurely add some of the young guys who have to accomplish much more before they are truly worthy. I'd propose adding the following to the "no" list.

    1961 FLEER RICHIE GUERIN 17 1.00
    1969 TOPPS LOU HUDSON 65 1.00
    1969 TOPPS CHET WALKER 91 1.00

Tim Hardaway wouldn't be a terrible selection. Personally, I was a big fan. I could see him maybe being a finalist at some point, but that's it. He's behind likely non HOFers like Jackson, Strickland, and Porter in career assists, and behind K. Johnson and Nixon in career assists per game. Hardaway never won a championship, only made 5 All Star games, and finished in the top three in assists per game just three times - and never first. I'd be far from appalled if he did get in, but I just don't think he has a very good shot. IMO KJ was clearly the better player, and he's never even been a finalist. I think that's pretty telling.

The best way to do this is to keep an organized running tally of no votes. shagrotn77, recbball, NickM, and fuj have voted so far. For everyone else who'd like to vote, copy the previous list and update it in your replay. After we close out the voting, we'll submit a list to PSA for them to e-mail the registrants for an official vote. I'm thinking maybe 6 or 7 no votes will get a player on the list, but it'll depend on how many votes we get. Here's where we're at so far, with no votes in parentheses:

    1961 FLEER RICHIE GUERIN (1)
    1961 FLEER RUDY LARUSSO (2)

Just updating the list with my complete votes. The list I posted earlier was in addition to all of the guys on Shag's "no" list.

Sorry for the confusion. I hadn't actually voted yet. There are some guys shagrotn would say No to who I'd say Yes to, and a few I'd need to research more carefully before voting.

I'll come back with my list shortly.

I was referencing making an initial list, because there are some guys who I doubt anyone would say shouldn't be included (e.g., Malone, Shaq, Garnett, and Kobe).

These are the guys who no one yet has said No to:

    1972 TOPPS ARTIS GILMORE 180 1.00
    1978 TOPPS BERNARD KING 75 1.00
    1986 FLEER KARL MALONE 68 1.00

why no love for Tony Parker? Decent stats, 3 titles, one finals MVP. He's not even 30 and he might have enough NOW to get in.

IMO Parker's chances go up dramatically if Dennis Johnson gets in.

I don't know if he'll make it, but the only reason I'd vote to drop a player from this set is if I think he has no chance.

Sabonis would probably have a better chance of getting in the HOF if he never played in the NBA. 12 ppg and 7.3 rpg are certainly not eye-popping stats. Granted, he didn't hit the NBA until he was 30 or 31, but he also never made an All Star team in 7 years. Like I said, had he not played in the NBA, I think a much better argument could be made. But the basketball HOF vote is so unpredictable, who knows? Petrovic made it with 2 good NBA seasons to his credit.

    Toni Kukoc.....

    1993-2006 11.6 PPG 4.2 RB 3.7 AST

Sabonis (like you said, started at age 31...way past prime)

    1995-2003 12.0 PPG 7.3 RB 2.1 AST
Not to mention he was the European Player of the Year in 1984, 1985, 1988, 1995, 1999

Im not sure how you could justify Kukoc but not Sabonis...

    Just my opinion of course...image

The Kukoc nomination certainly didn't come from me. He does have three rings though. Anyway, I never said Sabonis doesn't deserve to be in the HOF. I only said that he may have hurt his chances by playing in the NBA and posting mediocre stats.

I picked up a Cynthia Cooper Pinnacle Inside the WNBA rookie card recently. I was shocked when I loaded it on the registry to see that there were 387 nines of this card and 185 tens. Why are there so many Cooper's graded? I would not have guessed there would be anywhere near that amount.

  • There must be a whack of other registry sets that need the card. Is there a way to figure out how many sets a particular card appears in?

Far as I know the only way to tell is by adding it to your collection on the registry. Then it shows you all the sets it can be added to. If you're really curious you could always add a card, take a peek, and then delete it right away.

Already sent the request in. To fill in the blanks, Sabonis is '95 SP and Edwards is '94 Flair USA. I don't think Tatum has a card. Not positive though.

Petrovic has the same '85 Panini sticker as Sabonis, but PSA uses the best NBA rookie for the set. The Paninis are considered pre-rookies. I do like them though.

Just got the poll on Sabonis and was looking at the options. I would really recommend that we all think about adding the Skybox E-XL card for Sabonis. I hated the look of these cards but I think they are much harder to find than the SP cards. For comparison purposes I looked up the Kevin Garnett RCs in the pop report and found the following:

    Total Cards Graded:
    SP: 3,589
    E-XL: 945

KG was the premier rookie from that year so I figure this is the best comparison possible. The E-XL cards do appear to be a little less condition sensitive than the SP cards but I see that BBCE still has unopened boxes of SP available so there does not appear to be a shortage of product.

If we are looking for the "best" RC for Sabonis, the E-XL looks like the hardest one to find. Just my 2 cents.

For Sabonis and Petrovic that made the HOF for their European career makes more sense to me to use those, but I guess PSA follows Beckett.
With Panini now being the only current company with an NBA license I could see those Panini stickers getting more attention.

Sounds like somebody has some E-XL Sabonis cards he wants to sell! image Seriously though, SP is DEFINITELY the key Sabonis rookie. I've tracked this for a while in anticipation of his induction. The Garnett comparison is a good one. Garnett SPs routinely outsell E-XLs. SPs are also priced higher in Beckett ($75 vs. $40 per box). And, as previously mentioned, SPs are more condition sensitive. The reason there have been so many more SPs graded than E-XL is because SP is more valuable and desirable. This vote should really be a slam dunk for SP.
