<< <i>I don't really care what Ponson says or thinks . . . except that if he happens to think that the Sox lineup is "scary" then your statement that the Sox lineup scares "no one" would not be accurate.

I wouldn't be surprised to see Ponson cut or optioned once you guys pick up another Mariner. >>

Sorry, I should have made the initial comment that the Sox lineup scares no big league players.

I see you have gobbled up all the media crap about Washburn ..... the Yankees don't make that move unless the M's drop their asking price of a good prospect.

Yep, make that 9 straight excellent games by him. After tonight you know the Yanks must have him...

I think when it comes right down to it, the Mariners will reduce their asking price . . . it should be enough for them just to dump Washburn's salary. I get the impression they don't want to be lumped into the same category as the Pirates who "got nothing" for Nady and Marte.

<< <i>Yeah, and the Sox have probably the worst 7,8,9 hitters in the AL. Hmmmmm which would I choose. A gamble once every 5 days or a gamble every night image
    >>

This is a ridiculous comment. You do realize, don't you, who bats 7th, 8th, and 9th for the Yankees right now and how well they're doing right? Cabrera: .249, Molina .219, and Gardner at .153.

Lowrie, Varitek, and Crisp are at .284, .216, and .249. If the Red Sox have the worst 7-9 hitters in the AL, their main competition for the cellar dwellar is your Yankees. >>

Ridiculous? No .... A bit over the top? Maybe.

Excuse me for going a tad over board pointing out the FACT that the Sox lineup scares nobody image >>

The Red Sox have scored more runs, have a higher team batting ave., and a (slightly) higher OPS than the Yankees, for whatever that's worth. I don't really follow either of these teams, so for all I know these stats are a result of some player (or players) who are no longer with either team, or who are currently injured, but at least on the surface it looks like the Red Sox's lineup compares favorably to the Yankees'. If nothing else they're about $90 million cheaper, so that should probably count for something.

Interesting move . . . seems to fill one need but possibly create another need. I guess middle relief has been good enough in New York that they don't feel Farnsworth is necessary anymore?

Pudge is still a producer. He's hitting .295 this year and has an OPS of .756. At the very least, that's a huge upgrade over Molina who is at .229 and .586, respectively.
  • ctsoxfanctsoxfan Posts: 6,246 ✭✭
It's actually an odd move - all you heard about from Yankeeland over the last few weeks was how great Molina was defensively (he is pretty good, and throws out a decent amount of runners) and how the Yankee pitchers thought he was as good as Posada as a receiver. Of course, he can't hit a lick.

So now, you bring in a guy who has basically two skills - throwing out runners, and hitting close to .300. But, Rodriguez has no power, he doesn't get on base (check his .OBP), he's a horrible receiver, and pitchers are known to hate throwing to him (well documented).

Plus, who pitches the 8th inning now in NY? Granted, Farnsworth is no rock, but he was handling the job reasonably well. Breaking up that bullpen now might cause more harm than anything.

If they really wanted Pudge so bad, he probably could have been had for a minor leaguer at this point (his contract is up this year). But, he does seem to fit the Yankee profile of having a huge contract and a history of PED use, so maybe that could be it.

I would think that Edwar Ramirez could pitch the 8th inning. He's gone something like 11 innings without giving up a hit. And Marte could probably pitch the 7th or 8th if they wanted him too.

I feel bad for Molina. He was superb behind the plate, now he will be rotting on the bench. Of course, Molina's .220 BA didn't help.
  • softparadesoftparade Posts: 9,275 ✭✭✭✭✭
Farnsworth has been the butt of so many Yankee bullpen jokes over the past couple of years that it is laughable that the thought of him being traded for a CATCHER when Molina and Moeller are our options now leads me to believe that you are all a bunch of gasbags.

Please ...... Pudge is a HUGE improvement and Molina who has done a GREAT fill in job will be even better when he is not catching every day.

It's an excellent trade. Pudge gives us another right handed bat which after getting Nady completes our needs. Also if Molina (who can't hit a lick) goes down we have absolutely no one. Farnsworth can't be trusted in a big game, and since we have a glut of middle relief it wasn't too hard a decision.

Great trade though. Anyone that's saying it isn't is crazy. Molina the fill in or Pudge the vet that is proven in the post season and is still hitting .295? I'll take Pudge any day.

Here is some interesting Yankee math -

Yankee fans have been claiming all season that having Molina was essentially the same thing as having Posada (especially defensively, handling pitchers, etc.) - and now to hear them tell it, Pudge is an upgrade over Molina.

Therefore, Pudge is actually better than Posada. See how that works?

Anyway, the Yanks jettison Farnsworth for a solid catcher which now gives them two solid catchers and the Red Sox jettison Manny and some kids for Jason Bay. Jason Bay is no Manny Ramirez.

Yankees also swapped minor leaguers today to add another arm. I think the moves they made were all very sensible, a break from tradition the past few years.
